5 GT Turbo Renny 5 sleeper

update,

After finding a Williams arb for cheap, even though it’s sacrilege… I’ve chopped 20mm off each side and bent the ends so it matches the gtt arb I’ve got.

IMG_8009.jpeg

IMG_8049.jpegIMG_8067.jpeg
Also had to modify the power flex Williams bushes to match those for a gtt as they’re slightly different. The outside diameter is the same on the outside bushes but they don’t have the groove that sits inside the gtt arms. I didn’t take any pictures of the inner bushes but it seems that the Williams items are slightly thicker which I’ve took back to match the gtt inner bushes.
IMG_8020.jpegIMG_8018.jpeg
Here’s the slot I’ve cut into the outer bush:
IMG_8022.jpeg
After fitting there was a massive difference. Even though there’s only 2mm difference in thickness between the gtt and Williams arb, I think shortening the arb has increased its torsional strength and the 5 is definitely more stable under heavy braking. The rear wheels no longer feel like they’re lifting off the floor when going into corners. I’ll remove the arb at a later date to paint it as this was only a trial and error. However this hasn’t sorted the wheel spin out of corners. A Mate of mine came across a Clio cup car that was for sale and came with loads of spares. I had to buy the Grp N torsion bars off him which had never been fitted!!
IMG_8002.jpeg
IMG_8001.jpeg
These are the 23.2mm torsion bars and they have stopped majority off the wheel spin out of corners and they still feel comfortable and not crashy which I thought they might have done. The car is now feeling great and getting closer for a track day!!!
Another purchase this month was some AR-1’s. Not really a nankang fan but heard loads of good reviews about them. Ktec was selling these at £104 each.

And to compliment track tyres:

More updates soon.

More catch up.

Even though Ive said I’d be more active this year from last… I’ve not kept my promise!! New job, continental shifts and having a puppy does fill your days off 🤦🏼‍♂️
As you lot know, I try to keep my car looking as standard as possible inside and out. So with not having many gauges, not even a rev counter! I do need to keep an eye on somethings. Last time I was at efi I purchased a Zeitronix wideband to replace the AEM item in the Meglio (which is for sale £10k ono HIT ME UP) I decided to fit it into the 5 instead. Kinda makes sense as my 02 plug isn’t being used so it was literally an hours job using to radio wiring and feeding the 02 sensor through the dash into the engine bay to the exhaust. Bought a £8 single din blank off eBay and just drilled the needed holes.
IMG_8142.jpeg
Literally can’t hear the radio over the ITBs anyway so makes sense 😂
Went out for a quick spin to test the wideband and surprise surprise I broke another engine mount, this time the rear one!

IMG_8441.jpeg
That’s 2 mounts this year!! 😂😂 swapped it out in situ anyway…

Been helping a friend with his 5 and F4R conversion. Made some progress but his budget is really tight as he’s got other projects on… biggest outlay for the 5 F4R conversion is the exhaust manifold. Most fabricators want +£1000 for these and if you can’t weld you literally don’t have any choice but to fork out a full bag!! I’ve been looking for ways to use the 172 4-1 manifold as people just give them away for nothing. As I was researching Tom frankland (kebabman69) posted a modified rear mount.
IMG_7472.jpeg
It is literally GENIUS!! It moves the rear gearbox/engine mount out the way so
You can run the 172 manifold. I can’t believe I haven’t thought of it before!!! He’s a local lad to me and been chatting to him about if it works well and looks like it’s the way togo if you’re doing this conversion for the first time. I thought I’d have a go at having one modified and see how easy it was so gave a mount to a friend of mine who’s a really good welder and….

Didn’t take him long, said he did make a small Jig so he could do more which I’ve just purchased some rear mounts to be modified for anyone else that wants to go down this route.
IMG_8508.jpeg
Used my old snapped mount to test it and results speak for themselves 👍🏼 plenty of
Room for the manifold to run over the subframe into the exhaust tunnel. Just need to fabricate a front pipe over the subframe to the exhaust which won’t be too hard! Went for a drive out and met up with @StuR5 as his car was getting close to completion. He’s done a proper good job 👏🏼 it’s really clean and I’m kinda jealous as mine looks abit tierd or used and abused shall I say 😂

Done a really good job especially hiding the loom. Think he’ll be updating his thread soon so I don’t want to say too much. Still got some more to report on mine anyway and also retrorides will be in 2 weeks times which I hope I’ll see some of you guys for a catch up.

Thanks for reading

Cheers brigsy 👍🏼 I was gunna make a new one but if you’ve just welded thicker gauge to the bottom of the mount then that’ll save me some time. Might get chance to get it done before retrorides but if not, I’ll get it sorted whilst I’m having my new exhaust manifold fabricated 👀

Well…. I wasn’t going to show and tell untill it’s officially done but I’ve managed to get the top half of the pms manifold in 👀
IMG_8229.webp
As you can see it’s really REALLY close to the fire wall!! Had to “massage” it a little to give me some clearance but it’s actually easier to fit that my current manifold which I have to remove the offside drive shaft to get it out because it won’t come out from the top of the engine where as this does 🤷🏼‍♂️😂
IMG_8236.webp
See the difference in the PMS and my current manifold!!

When I was talking to Nick at Pure Motor Sport, I said I was only interested in the top half (primary’s) which he was more than happy to sell me!! Im going to route it under the subframe which even though there’s the kebabman rear mount mod now, I still want to route it that way as I think it’ll be easier to work on the car if I can just take off the bottom half. So it’ll be going to a mate of mine to have the final piece fabricated after Retrorides. Still, if your thinking about running a 172 4-1 manifold, the Kebabman mount is the way forward!!! I’d already committed and purchased this before he’d even dreamt that idea up 💡

Cheers mate, it definitely does look amazing 👌🏼 I measured it several times before doing the big purchased and it was kinda a 50/50 if it was gunnna fit but there’s about 20-25mm gap at the tightest point. The angle makes it look close but it gives me more space between the back of the block and above the drive shafts plus it’s further away from the starter motor than my current manifold.

RRG’23

Been looking forward to RetroRides at Mallory all year and literally been prepping my car ready for it. Even though I had loads of issues I was determined to get it there. Monday previous the starter decided to pack up so ordered a new one to fit. As with my 4-2-1 exhaust manifold over the starter, it was easier to Jack the car up, remove the drivers side front wheel and drive shaft the do the job from underneath.
IMG_8602.jpeg
After fitting tried starting the car but literally could not get the key inside the ignition barrel. Spent all night stripping out the steering column to get the barrel out and remove the steering lock as I only had afew days left till the show. Spoke to a friend of mine and he said to hot wire it whilst I wait for a new barrel to arrive. 0f4354b5-695a-4621-8ad2-e030f9f71915.jpeg

Ended up using 50A RCD for the ignition and a 6A for the starter. Worked a dream and might actually make a proper push button start in the future. After proving how awesome the RCD starter switches were I fitted the track wheels and tyres and went to shell to fill the car up with the finesest 99 petrol
IMG_8611.jpeg
Set off early Friday afternoon as last year we got there at 3pm and the campsite was 90% full and this year we wanted a decent spot.IMG_8617.jpeg

Literally got camp up just after Gerard’s on the back straight, Was a proper good spot 👌🏼 Quick60 was amazing as always and was entertaining alday. Once finished we watched the TAT auction and got afew pints in the pub and did a few laps round the track whilst getting pissed

Sunday! Packed up camp, went for breakfast at the pub and bumped into @Big Steve - Raider and had a quick chat. booked the car on track for early afternoon with @Brigsy. Proper shitting myself as I’ve never done a track days with thousands of folk watching!! Watched my mate hammer his 730i round track which looked and sounded amazing.
IMG_8682.jpeg
After that, was my turn to get on track. Car felt great on the first lap, managed to overtake someone before the hairpin and try catch briggs up but then car felt underpowered so pulled into the pits on the next lap. Found a bolt on the rose jointed alternator tensioner had snap, the guys at the Haltech stand gave me some bolts and I was back on track. 5490CD01-7450-4A20-B88A-256EBA5D8070.jpeg

Car felt amazing. Was overtaking everyone, managed to overtake 3 people in one run (2.5 laps) marshals decided to put me with some of the quick60 lot and I was quicker than the group I was with. I was so happy with how the car handled. Definitely the Williams ARB and the Grp N torsion bars helped but there’s still some improvement to be had.
IMG_8646.jpegIMG_8648.jpeg
After our sesh me and briggs went back to the turborenault stand. Most people had gone at this point. Definitely think it was quieter this year than last probably due to the weather being abit on/off however, it’s still a great show, my favourite of the year. I’m wanting todo RRW and RRG next year. Hopefully see more of you guys soon as it was great having a catch up.

Thanks for reading!

Great write up and looks like you had a blast!
Honeslty, had a blast. Mallory is a great track for older cars. John copper esses, hairpin and devils elbow are amazing! Whilst waiting in the pits queing for the run. Was chatting to the guys who also was on track and had a rate good chat. Felt like I was only off track for 5mins between runs. Really like the sprint format aswell. Just wish you could’ve done just one more lap!

Just to add, me and @Brigsy made it into a speedhunters posts 👏🏼 459C5E26-1C92-4F5A-86E2-65912A256C61.jpeg
Went to drivers collection shortly after RRG, Really good show. Mega amount of quality motors there. Surprised there isn’t a lot of other Renaults there… just me last year but this year @StuR5 met me there. Was a good show, my last show of the year as my shifts land on the weekends which some of the shows are on and my 5 needs stripping down as it’s looking alittle tierd.

Will be aiming for the new engine to finally be built, PureMotorsport manifold to be fitted, mapped again at Efi Parts and paint/powder coating to be done to make it look fresh again.

Also, my 350bhp Clio 200 is up for sale so someone do a buy so that I can make another financial mistake which will probably include another Renault.

I know some of this isn’t Renault 5 related… not like I can’t be arsed but I’m not so good at keeping upto date with this plus, it’s keeps a good record of other stuff done to other people’s cars and I guess any information will be easier to find if someone needs it and will be just on one thread! 🤷🏼‍♂️ anyway….. the Clio sold. Went quicker than I thought tbh and now I’m daliy-less and been walking to work 😂 had the usual hundreds of daydreamers asking for “best price” or “would you swap for a corsa” but it went to a local lad that seen it on cliosport.net. Literally looked at it, took him out for a spin and it was gone!
IMG_9073.webp
So now I’m on the look out for a new daily…. After watching @Adey i was thinking a clio200t or a Clio trophy but seen as I’ve got some spare cash, might aswell splash out and get a megane 280/300 so watch this space 👀 after the Clio sold me and my mate Dan took his mk1 Clio back to EFI Parts for another rolling road sesh. He runs a similar spec to my 5 but has 197 bottom end internals and catcam 421’s. Made 219bhp & 177ftlb last time but he’s constantly getting black flagged for noise which sometimes has reached 105dB!! IMG_8950.webp
This time he’s fitted a pipercros px600 plenum and also changed the valves and valve springs as we only found out the other month, 172/182’s run 2-piece valves and he wanted to change them for piece of mind.

IMG_8964.webp
as you can see, PMS engine mount kit in a mk1 clio…. Yes 172/182 mounts are a direct fit for all those unkowns.
IMG_9074.webp
The car had lost afew hp & lb/ft due to what we could guess was the few changes that he made. He removed the middle silencer as he was told the noise was forward facing and not coming out the back of the car however, Chris said that this can effect torque and which it had lost afew!! I wasn’t aware that it would make that much of a difference!! Also… it had lost 7bhp from what Chris said would be a mixture of stiffer valve springs which Chris made clear that the engine is now having to work abit hard to turn the cams plus the lack of air getting to the jenveys as there’s left area for air to enter the filter.
IMG_8968.webpAll in all… made good figures for a non forged engine. I’ve literally got all the same internals boxed up in the garage waiting to be built up and put into the renny 5! I would also be happy with similar figures.

Thanks for reading 👍🏼

Not to be sniffed at at all. Bet it shifts in that mk1, will be nuts in a 5. Any idea on the difference in weight?

Looking forward to meg updates too (y)

we’ve not weighed it yet but it’s definitely heavier than the 5. It’s literally a twin to coops’ Clio…. Same ph1 red, same cage, wheels etc… we guess atleast 900kg unless coops’ has weighed his 🤷🏼‍♂️

Had a look at a pov spec 280 cup which was okay and a 300trophy which was amazing however @Big Steve - Raider has told me about the battery issue. I’ve took his advice and found a nice spec’d 280cup which I’m hoping to test drive soon.

I’ve finally bought a car I’ve wanted for afew years now and a good replacement from my old fully forged meglio….IMG_9161.jpegIMG_9163.jpeg
Took me ages to find one, they’re very scarce… especially when you want a certain spec. There’s only been upto 32 megane 4rs’ for sale at one time for nearly two months nationally…. Yes!! You read that right. Only 32 cars for sale at one time in the whole of the UK!! Looked at getting a Trophy but @Big Steve - Raider steered me away from them with their battery issues and someone else told me having a problem with the GPF filter so, I’ve ended up getting a non-GDF filter (pre-2019) 280 cup Came with the smaller 7” screen as I didn’t like the heater controls on the touch screen, has heated seats and 19” wheels. Honeslty can’t complain, it’s great for everyday use, very comfortable. Done quite afew miles init and it barley uses any fuel compared to my old meglio.
IMG_9148.jpegIMG_9150.jpegIMG_9151.jpegIMG_9149.jpeg
@StuR5 came down in his Clio 200 from Manchester to collect some goodies for his f4r converted R5 campus. Took him out in the megane and also my renny 5 which he said is night and day different to His. Let him have a drive of it and after he rung its neck he finally decided to follow suit and get a set of itb’s on his R5. Think he’ll be making his a similar spec to mine as he said he feels more confident driving mine than his own.

Again, sorry to lack of Renault 5 content but I kinda wanna keep all my updates all on one thread so apologies and I promise there will be a lot of R5 content soon….
