5 GT Turbo Renny 5 sleeper

Proper job, looks fantastic 😍

Pic may not give a good view of clearance but would be tempted to get some bulkhead/bonnet seal heat protection to avoid any drama 👍

Today the manifold was back out, unfortunately one of the hooks snapped for the exhaust springs so I’m changing all the hooks on the exhaust as they’re the only thing on manifold that isn’t amazing. As @Duncan Grier advised I got on with my heat control… needless to say though the gold sheet it a bastard to get on without creasing (don’t fall out with me because of this 😂)IMG_0261.webp
Tried twice and even with a roller it’s a bitch. If I was gunna go it again I’d probably do it in sections.
IMG_0263.webp
Covered the starterIMG_0265.webp
Sleeved in he cables to the starterIMG_0266.webp
Sleeves the breather AN line.IMG_0270.webp
Also did the side of the catch can as that’s close to the manifold. Still wait for some more heat sleeves to arrive, dunno if it’s me but seems like sometimes stuff takes ages to get delivered. Will hopefully be getting it MOT’d within the month as Retro Rides Weekender is only round the corner.

Whilst the modified PMS manifold was away it was a great time to change the master cylinder as I was still running the oem 19mm item…
IMG_9305.jpeg
Bought this absolute monster from Ruanova!! 24mm Grp A master CYL, £160 delivered to my door. IMG_0298.jpeg
Chunky beast compared to the oem CYL.
IMG_0337.jpeg
Plug & Play too 👍🏼
IMG_0344.jpeg
Topped up with MOTUL’s finest!! IMG_0339.jpeg
Manifold was back after afew days with a few mods, the V-Band was slightly facing the floor so had a 10degree pie cut welded in… as usual my mate Ben did an epic jobIMG_0336.jpeg
He also welded in the new spring hooks at the PMS hooks were weak and naffIMG_0335.jpeg
Really lucky knowing someone like Ben, literally does side jobs at home and is quick and high quality!! IMG_0334.jpeg
Can’t get over how cool this thing looks 😎 bought a new gasket as this will be the final time it’ll be fitted!!IMG_0338.jpeg
Been on the shelf with this manifold for over a year!! IMG_0348.jpeg
Getting a lot closer to being finished now. Just afew more loose ends and it’ll be ready for its MOT and off to its first show this year.

More to come soon…..

Thanks lads 👍🏼 as you lot know this has been on the back burner for awhile and as far as I know, I could be the first to have done this and im proper happy with the out come! Still more todo before Retro Rides weekender so another update will be posted in afew weeks!!

Just a quick update, the 5 flew through its MOT. I’m not surprised as it’s always garaged and majority of the stuff has been replaced within the past year. The V-band is slightly blowing so that needs another look at. Also the brake pedal feels abit dog shit. Going to give it another bleed and see if the pedal feel improves. IMG_0387.jpeg
I’ve got just over 2weeks till retro rides so it looks like I won’t be able to get my new bonnet painted and fitted, same goes for my fuel cap. Still afew more updates todo before it’s big voyage to goodwood.

Mark.

Bit of a back pedal. Some of you might of noticed, I’m now running a cambelt cover from a 197/200 engine. Having the cambelt out in the open for 5yrs has kinda got me thinking I’ve been lucky enough for something not to happen.had to machine some of the engine mount fitting on the cover just to get it to fit inside the 5’s tight engine bay.
IMG_9468.webp
Its a loads cleaner than the 172/182 cover IMO.
IMG_9470.webp
changed the look of the engine, also you can see how close the manifold is to the fire wall 🤏🏼👀 after the big drive the other day the bonnet seal hasn’t melted yet 👌🏼 the cover is quite similar to the 172/182 covers however some of the bolt holes don’t line up but there’s still three M8 bolts holding the cover on.
IMG_0405.webp
I do need to find the plastic cover for the VVT/MAP sensor cable just to neaten this side of the engine up. Still afew more updates to come before RRW.

Looks loads better with cambelt cover on.

Id be tempted to put a single skin nimbus heatshield on the bulkhead and maybe on the underside of bonnet to deflect heat for when you really get on it. Its cheap and super easy to work with.

I did think about that stuff but the space is that tight I thought the gold reflective tape would be upto the job. If it fails I will fit some of the nimbus sheeting though 👍🏼 I’ve got another bonnet that’s never been used and still grey primer from factory. Will be having it painted and fitting gold tape underneath that aswell. Saying that it had a good few hours of having its neck rung and nothing had melted 😂

Another quick one,

Nipped it down to my mates garage just because I’m running out of time before Retrorides Weekender. Had bought some brand spanking rear shocks from GAZ as mine were knackered… couldn’t even adjust the dampening on one of them.IMG_0442.jpeg
You can see from the rear discs it’s hardly been used this year!!
IMG_0443.jpeg
Fitted a new V-band clamp IMG_0445.jpeg
Also had the front camber, toe in and castor set to standard Clio Williams setup
IMG_0446.jpeg
This is to trial if infact that -2degree of camber and a unknown amount of castor was letting the wheels spin at Mallory park coming out of the hairpin. Very frustrating as I know that when it hooks up it’s like a rocket out of corners but as you know everything is trial and error.IMG_0448.jpeg
Going to trial this for now…doesn’t show on this screen but I have +2.2 degree of castor. I don’t know if that’s good or bad but I guess I’ll have to get down to the local race track (Junction 27) and see if it’s cured some of that wheel spin. Next update will hopefully be me arriving at good wood next Friday.

Thanks for a quick read.

Also… my Renault dealer sticker started pealing so I improvised with a new window sticker 😂

How did you get on with the Brake pedal?

It will be a lot longer with the bigger piston size. When we fit pedal boxes into race cars we use the smallest cylinder in our case a .62 which is 16mm on the front and a slightly larger one for the rear to give a little less pressure. So with a 5mm larger piston you will have a longer pedal. Especially with a Servo. Which we don’t use.

I think 90% of high power fwd cars wheelspin out of the hairpin at Mallory regardless of camber, its just a slow corner.

I was leaving black lines out of it each time in my extra van with -1deg. Now with -2.5 and lsd same black lines 😆

Plated gripper diff would be on the list for me.

Totally forgot to mention, I thought the same… we bled the system again and still ended up with less travel. I don’t know if the rod on the end of the cylinder is slightly longer than the oem 19mm (forgot to measure it like a pleb) but the fronts were binding slightly and I adjusted the shaft that connects the pedal to the back of the servo and stopped it binding. Think it kinda makes sense having a bigger cylinder which has a bigger volume has less distance to move to push more fluid 🤷🏼‍♂️ god knows. Does feel better but I still not 100% happy with it.

I’d love a gripper, I just don’t know if I’m being picky because round the rest of Mallory there was no issues. I nipped out earlier to the local race track and unfortunately the police was there doing the rounds. They’ve just put a fresh injunction on that spot at Junction 27 and now it’s getting good weather they’re probably keeping an eye on that place.

Retro Rides Weekender ‘24 @ Goodwood circuit!

So here we go…. I’m a big RRG fan but never been to RRW. Met up with my mate Ben and his lovely E32 730i on Friday morning at M1 trowel services. Long steady drive down from Nottinghamshire to West Sussex. Took 5hrs with a stop for fuel, food and hit abit of traffic. Put camp up pretty quick and got the beers, steak and potatoes out as soon asIMG_0483.webpIMG_0488.webpIMG_0485.webp
Lads next to us had a lovely F335gtsIMG_0484.webp
Bumped into two brothers at the camp site who’d also came down in their R5 which was a track weaponA460A139-0875-4389-95D4-738E885C5EEA.webp
Saturday!! Took both our cars into the circuit, Ben had a track pass but I’d missed out and only had a show pass for the day. Goodwood is amazing!! Can’t believe how well it’s been kept… wish there were more tracks kept like this.

Managed to get a passenger wrist band and Ben took me round… wow what a track. Loved it.

Fitted the GoPro into bens car and lucky caught him nearly loosing it 😂😂

Caught up with the two brothers with the R5 campus

They said it was a a F7P on twin Weber 45’s and running about 160bhp but it only weighed 760kgs!
Both me and Ben managed to get the obligatory “Goodwood photo”

Got back to camp, had a bbq and went for the tat auction… honestly it gets funnier every year. Some right shit gets sold, think they made well over a grand which goes to charity
IMG_0590.webp
Here’s a quick video of the show

Loved the show, just a shame it’s 200miles each way. Possibly will be going next year but won’t be going every year like I do RRG at Mallory which is only 45mins from my front door.

Even though I’m half Irish I didnt burn that much but wasn’t far off looking like a drumstick squishy 😂
