5 GT Turbo Another Red Renault 5 GT Turbo On It's Way Back To The Road

I came out of petrol station and got in passenger seat of van......realised and pretended to mess about in glovebox and then go round to drivers seat.....

Anyway, crack on, let's see some paint on it , you slackrat.
Smooth.

I got the car seat out.

Next area to tackle...

Cleaned up the worst of it to see what I was dealing with.

Then, as with the fuel flap, I made a template using Solidworks and the Cricut.

I ran out of plain card so had to go all snazzy!

Then to make the outer section.

IMG_5486.webp

I wanted to try and replicate the drawn down flange of the original panel, so I went on one.

Lubed up the hole

IMG_5487.webp

My fly press is out of action at the minute so the vice and a mallet will do.
IMG_5488.webp

Not bad.
IMG_5523.webp
IMG_5522.webp

Almost identical to the original.
IMG_5524.webp

Finished off the outer profile. (I left the material on so I had something to grip and give me some wiggle room if it pulled out of shape - this worked pretty well.)

IMG_5529.webp
IMG_5530.webp

Looking good but not quite finished just yet.

IMG_5531.webp

Using the original panel as a guide, I made a jig to form the lower section.
IMG_5554.webp
IMG_5552.webp

I marked the position of the form, using the offside panel as a guide. I then lined it up the best I could with my jig and tap tap tapped away.

IMG_5555.webp

That worked out pretty well.

Offered up and plug weld holes drilled.
IMG_5574.webp

Lick of weld through on both parts

IMG_5577.webp
IMG_5582.webp

Finally get it tacked in place.

Unnecessarily long-winded repair, but I'm happy with the result. On to the next! 👍

You need to update the title of your thread with this level of greatness 😉

Another Red Renault 5 GT Turbo On It's Way Back To The Road - Binky edition!

Love it 👌👌👌
Ha ha I wouldn’t go that far but thanks. Honestly, what the guys are doing with Binky makes my heart swell! 😍 If I had the time and resource to do what they’re doing, I’d be like a pig in muck. Maybe one day.

Got to be the best shell out there, no disrespect to anyone else, but if you were paying someone to do it this tight and straight, you'd be paying mega bucks.
Won't matter what you do with rest of the car, shell will be mint.
Shit man I don’t know. But thanks.
I guess that’s the thing about doing your own car, you can choose what you do, and how you do it. There’s no definitive right or wrong.
There are some original sections here that aren’t 100%, but I’m cleaning them up and leaving them be. That would do some people’s head in. Anything that’s too far gone, I’m going to replace, and I’m going to do it to the best of my ability.

My ideal outcome would be if it ends up looking like a decent, un-restored example. Will I achieve that, who knows. My budget will probably end up dictating that! 🤣
Honestly, I’ll just be chuffed to get it back on the road, regardless of how it looks. 👍🏻

If you can blow repairs in, looks like most will be hidden anyhow, paint is smart enough as it is, I'd go to town on running gear, blast and 2k black all sussy bits, get a zinc plating kit , have a play with that, make bay nice and you won't have spent a packet and have a nice straight GT and it still won't be too precious to blat about in when weather is dry.
Spunk up on paint later if you're ever flush, but you can disappear up your own arse with that game, first scratch....chip, bit of a fault in finish..... you'll be contemplating hanging in garage...
Good work, well done 👍

Cheers @Turbell
The paint is not good in places. Not sure if I’ll be able to leave it as is. We’ll see.
I’ve got very little experience with paint, so that’s gonna take some getting my head around.
As for zinc plating, I’ve been tempted to buy a kit a few times. I get a bit daunted by it and shit out. Again, just gotta get my head around it and stop being soft. 👍🏻
