5 GT Turbo Renny 5 sleeper

Which front discs did you use? 5 gt turbo list 20mm thickness new and 172 24mm new

Never got close to 172 calipers on the 5 but could it be this? No idea on hub mounting position with 172 calipers?

Looks much better sprayed 😉
Im using Clio 172 hubs. They’re literally beefer version of the gtt hubs. Only issue being is that I had to use a mix of Clio 16v/gtt shafts and a Clio 172 coupling. I guess the offset on the inside of the hubs is greater than the gtt hubs?? 🤷🏼‍♂️ Only other thing to make them fit is to machine the tab where the coilovers bolts into as this is about 4/5mm thicker. You can see here where I’ve had the tabs milled down a couple of millimetres either side:

@Turbell this is the guide that I used… seems to be used by a lot of other guys I know that have done the same conversion:

There’s a handful of ways todo it depending on skill and cash flow. Regarding the ecu and loom… if youve got a ph2 loom then you need to use everything on it including the uch! I might be wrong but the ecu, barrel, key and uch have to be off the same car otherwise it won’t work (this is in case you’ve bought just the loom, ecu, barrels instead of the whole car and they might not be a matching set) everyone I’ve spoken to has used a ph1 loom as it don’t use uch. If your shit at wiring like me then I suggest you send it off to someone like beaniesport. He did the loom on my meglio and I’ve never had an issue and everything works perfect 👌🏼 Nowt worse than rewiring a loom and either it don’t work or just burns the car to the ground! The ecu will need unlocking if you use a ph1 loom and want to use the original Renault 5 ignition barrel and key to work.

Pre-mapping update.

Took the car to my mate garage to set the timing to Group N with the standard 172 cams… usually this is a do it at home job in a Clio but because the engine is so close to the suspension strut the engine and subframe needs to be dropped so it’s a lot easier todo it in a ramp. Whilst doing that put in some fresh oil and filter. 49B0CCDB-C6D8-4613-B94C-176F22AFF62B.webp

Finally got a cheap oil catch can and the correct fittings. And after a 3 MONTH wait my red HT leads have finally arrived!!

The red HT leads tie everything together…. Just a few loose ends but nothing that can’t be sorted at a later date. Hopefully everything will be sound tomorrow and me and Danny should have a good day as both our cars Renault 5 and mk1 clio both on ITB’s will come out with good figures at EFI Parts!!

EFI-Parts….

The day has finally arrived. Me and Danny had our session booked with Chris at 3pm on Tuesday so we both thought that it would be better to turn up abit early and just check everything before both our cars went onto the rollers due to the fact it’s bang on 100miles door to door. Mine was in for a full map due to the ktec-jenvey kit coming off an unknown engine setup and Danny’s was a slight tweek from swapping his 197cams to cat cams-421’s.

The renny 5 was first as we knew it was gunna take Chris longer…. After about an hour Chris said that he was struggling to get anymore than 170bhp out of it. He asked to remove the air filter due to the fact it might have been choking the itb’s. Not long after it started making +190bhp. Due to the fact that the trumpet length is only 5mm smaller than the internal height of the air filter it choked the engine from getting any air!! It made great figures though being an £250 unknown mileage engine on Group N timing and itb’s.

After mine was done it was Danny’s mk1 clios turn. He has got a big spec on this track car. It’s a ph1 172 engine with 197 crank, rods, pistons and valve springs. Cat cam 421’s, Clio 182 manifold and the same ktec-jenveys and Gen90 ecu that’s in my Renault 5. Last time it made 209bhp so he was hoping on bigger power torque curves…

Lower black/red lines are Clio on 197cams and higher black/red lines are on catcam 421’s. It’s made that car so torquey and has massive midrange and loads top end. Also before we set off I took the Renault 5 to the local weigh bridge and it came in at 840kgs!! This means now that it’s pushing 228bhp/tonne!!

Also done a video which I will upload tonight… I’m happy with the results as usual from EFI and Chris is always brillant. The engine will get a refresh as he did mention that he had to add extra ignition timing which he reckons is probably lost compression. I’ve got 197 internals waiting to be fitted this winter and I will be back next summer at EFI to try and break the 200bhp mark.

Cheers @StuR5 👍🏼 Think only issue you’ll have is finding the gtx engine mounting brackets as they were scarce when I sourced mine over 3years ago!! unless you decided to the use the inner wing/top engine mount and gearbox/battery tray mount (literally mk1/mk2 Clio mounts) apart from that…. Everything else can be found on eBay pretty easily.

@Renny 5 I wonder if renault still supply the gtx mounts. Also i didnt know about the clio options, ill have a look into that. Thanks for the info. 👍🏻
R5 and Clio subframes are literally identical apart from width, control arm length, arb type/length and drive shafts etc… the bolting positions are the same. So you can run many combinations of mounts only thing being is that if you ran the Clio inner wing top mount you will need to fabricate it in 👍🏼

Also, I love your 5 👌🏼 That’s what mine looked like before I molested it, now it’s covered in stone chips from racing everything 😂

What are the differences in width between the Clio and 5 subframes?

Later extra 1.9d van runs the suspended inner wing engine mount, so if you can sniff one of them out thats an option of you choose that route, they also run a lower dogbone torque mount similar to 172 iirc. Mine had it all on but cut it off many years ago as i run subframe mounted c1j. I dont think the gtx mount is available new from ren, but somebody on the r5gtturbo group on facebook makes replica versions.

On the subframes, barley anything. Probably the odd arb bracket and afew millimetres in width and on the clio 16v/Williams have the dog bone mount bracket. The control arms and driveshafts are different lengths though and you have to run Clio arms with Clio shafts or r5 arms with r5 shafts because the hub bearings bind up when turning. Also there’s two types of arb… ones like the Williams and gtt where the bush pushes over the arb and the Clio 16v has a bolt through bush that looks like a lollipop (which I’ve ran and are shite)

She's a real peach. It'll be a shame to start modifying it but it'll be worth it 😂😂.
Yours looks mint too, your instagram inspires me . Ill start a build thread on mine soon, hopefully it'll move pretty quickly.

I won’t be running any shafts up front. Be all custom wishbones, going to try and use 197 uprights with the Brembo calipers.

Small update…. Put about 200 hard miles on the 5 since being mapped at efi and it’s not missed a beat! It’s never been this good I’m proper chuffed with it! I was literally debating boosting the old setup because I’d heard mixed reviews about ITB’s and I’m glad I’ve gone this route!! Had a prefab garage built so I can keep it dry through the winter months and get the engine refreshed rebuilt for next summer. EE7E6A55-7C6B-4ED6-8718-F098BE7BD0B0.jpeg
Because I’m renovating my house aswell as building a new garage, keeping two project cars and paying for holidays I didn’t have much spare cash to having anything bigger than this. I’ve built a large storage shelf for “Renault spares” 🤣 wired it up myself and just boarded what I needed to for the time being. Whilst I was sorting the garage I’ve also been sorting new engine parts into new boxes for the next engine 👀

Pistons, rods, arp bolts and crank from my old clio 200 engine (now meglio) which will hopefully make my engine higher comp 🙏🏼 Seen folk getting 12.5:1 compression in 172 engines so should be aiming for +200bhp and the PureMotorsport manifold which I’m still unsure will fit?!?

Anyway…. Back to today. Because the renny 5 has been faultless the only thing that needed doing was a new expansion tank and a good coolant flush.

Now I’m ready for CSF this weekend and looking forward to meeting everyone!
