Oh how gone cold turkey with no power hours or generally spamming you lot with lots of pictures and words yet small progress
While car safely with @Mark_L will probably be collecting end of January/February, have reserected long overdue Grier house DIY jobs
So more a keep alive update took a punt on DQ500 2wd adaptor plate and short shaft to see if it works on mine......bonus if so but if not know what I need to do no proven kit available ATM
Also when dropping off Mark had some wider OEM style arches we lightly positioned and had potential as a real option...Mark could not resist ....I mean kind enough to attach roughly to guage looks and while angles need some fine tuning certainly keeps the OEM GT Turbo era I am after v full fat Maxi kit which is not really what the car is.
Did pop in the garage to have a good look at adaptor plate and using the older VW 02M driveshaft flange bit purchased.
However while I need to do a final test on the gearbox when with it next, not fully convinced but may still be an option
While the older short shart has a retaining bolt on the 02M box, on the RS3 box no such option and uses a snap ring and of course transfer box also bolted to gearbox with stub spline for OEM driveshaft fitment.
It is 4mm short based on quick clamp/measure by eye.....could machine the adaptor to sit 4mm in if needed and also machine groove in short shaft splines but need to see how it sits in the box as outside of the spline connection the adaptor plate is just a normal seal and has not function for any lateral load of that makes sense
Below pic shows exploded view of transfer box and option B could be to design/fabricate needle bearings held mounted to block and use OEM driveshaft / and of course cover for exposed box section
And or get the shaft measured and custom size one from Dave Mac propshafts who normally do my custom shafts in the past
Option 1 in play, hope to be with the box in the coming weeks and will conclude that one
I may be able to confirm a chunk of option 2 at the same time and even strip transfer box in advance
Option 3
Only in play of above fails, I can still mount engine/box and work out the best position based on driveshaft angles so plenty to do before entering this
Option 4
Could go DQ381 and update clutch pack if needed (2wd)......but a step back from my plan and have already gone wider to accept the DQ500 box choice

So while things progressing nicely, reached a point I needed to go on a long road trip and have a day of hard graft with our resident metal fabrication god @Mark_L
Focus was on rear spaceframe final positioning and fine tweaks before tacking the beast of the engine and box final resting and mounting points
We had ambitious plans to get some more of the rear cage sections in along with some other jobs but don't underestimate the time lots of measuring, fine tweaking and designing solutions as you go consumes.....sure Mark will have wanted to kill me by midday when I decided the rear spaceframe wanted to go 20mm up and slight change to how the engine was going to sit
Turned out spot on and after 10 odd hours on it both done in, did get some time to test fit seat again for cage along with discussing rest of cage design
