My Renault 5 1.7 GTX Thread

So, my rear wiper doesnt work correctly. When I press the button in moves about a third of its cycle and stops, then moves a bit more, and finally the last third.

Would that be a faulty wiper relay, the Klaxon 54616, or something else?
It's French. thats a design feature rofl.gifrofl.gif

Does anyone have a PDF of an owners manual available anywhere? I was wondering what the light on the dash is that is like a heart beat??

Thats the EML. Usually means a sensor is out, on the 21 the most common cause is a faulty or badly adjusted TPS.

Its not on, i just wondered what it was. there is a bulb in it, but i dont think my 5 has any engine management or fancy things like that!

A lot of the dashes are templates, and have redundant sockets.... for example you will see a coil plug heat light on a petrol R19, it's not used but it is used on a diesel.

Whats your end goal? Money no object OEM or get it done?

Somewhere in the middle .... Factory looks, minimal cost! WIth the vacuum hoses, its not really a case of cost, i just replaced the whole lot because i figured the less joins the better. So, is it better to have single runs of silicone hose, or silicone-plastic-silicone ?

So, that was a useful learning and debugging session. Watched some videos and looked at wiring diagrams to understand how wiper motors work with regard to the park position. Eventually traced the fault to 2 broken wires in the harness from the boot to the lid. Shouldnt be too difficult to repair. For what its worth, the 3 wires going to the motor are +12v (on always when the wipers should be on), Ground and +12v pulse from the relay, which pulses half a second. In its park position, the 12v doesnt get to the motor to turn it because the motor is in its park position. When the half second pulse comes from the relay, it drives the motor just far enough for the switch to move to the off-park position, where the 12v takes over to complete the motion until it gets back to parked when the contact switches off the power. It then waits again for the pulse from the relay.

There is also a diode on the motor, which on mine looks to have crack in it. It still seems to work and the diode tester on my multimeter said it worked, but im replacing it anyway for the 20p or so its costs for a new one!

So, the problem where it was moving only a little was becuase it was only moving when it got the half second pulse, and was missing the +12v needed to keep it going until the end of the cycle.

Dashboard bulbs arrived. Be warned, it turns out not all 509T bulbs are created equally, and the ones I bought had a terrible fit, because the terminals are not offset, they try to slide under the membrane. Quite fiddly to get in right, but in now and all dash lights working.

Then _disaster_ happened. I installed the visor, went to get the wife to show the finished job, and when I came back, realised the visor had a great crack in it! I took it out and it fell into 2 pieces 😢

I had already fixed a broken leg on it once, so I had a quick look on ebay, and _very_ fortunately, managed to buy the only visor on ebay for £15!!

Rear harness is common for breaking at the tailgate joint, resulting in popped fuse when rear demist or wiper is operated, nice easy fix 👍

Yeah not hard ... hardest part was soldering the thick wires, practically impossible to get the solder to flow through the whole lot!

Yep ballache to solder. I had the pleasure of doing it on a freshly painted gtt after the bodyshop had kindly snipped the wiring to remove the tailgate.
