My Renault 5 1.7 GTX Thread

oosh thats quite a bow, ill check mine (y) thanks for the pics
I understnad 1.7s a renowned for it. Back in the day, renault made a modification which ran an extra hose from the main fan, to under the carb. It included a temperature sensor which would start the fan. My plan is to do similar, but using a small marine inline fan, running constantly when the engine is on.

Sorry mate ,long time ago , have you tried a internet search .All I remember I stumbled across it at a motor factor on flyer . Was A big problem on 1.7 21s

Carb is back in and....
She run
Strange thing .... the choke seems to work better ... it was always a little weird with the choke, as though, on a cold start, it would run better without the choke engaged. Ive only started he once, but the choke seemed "normal".

I ended up making my own gaskets (to see if i could really!) ... i cant believe there are 4 between the base of the carb and the manifold! When i put it together, I added a slithering of heat-proof gasket sealant on each side.

Hopefully all is good, next task is to rig up a fan to blow air over it.

Get some phenolic material to help isolate the heat from the gasket base. Made a big difference.

Well, there already is 2!!
Im not sure if thats how the original carb setup is supposed to be, but I have

Carb
-Gasket
Metal plate with raised rubber, the shape of the 2 barrels, this sits in a bakelite surround
-Gasket
Aluminium section with vacuum pipe
-Gasket
Bakelite spacer
-Gasket
Manifold

The 2 bakelite parts should be a phenolic material right? They look like OEM as they have notches and pins in all the right places.

Completed the build of a small marine fan to blow air over the carb/inlet manifold. Mounted the fan on the plastic panel next to the radiator, the 3" output is reduced to 2", then a long pipe runs along the front of the engine, and loops round under the air box. Power is supplied from a relay which is activated from a live on the coil when the ignition is turned on. Hopefully it will do as well as the original fix for the 1.7 hot carbs!

So, my little GTX passed its MOT, pretty much flying colours (well, faded red!) .. initially failed on handbrake adjustment. When he was sorting out the handbrake, he said that a "ball" in the adjuster was missing, not even in the drum, so probably long disintegrated, and i needed to find a new part as it will keep happening. What should I be looking for? What is this "ball" ? I'll probably take my haynes manual down and ask him to point out.
