21 Turbo Amrits Red Rocket

Started the fan wiring loom. This will be ECU controlled.

Relay block here I think. Close to battery, close to fans, good earth point.

I got enough done to get the fans working from the ECU AUX 4 output, but I was short a proper fuse holder and connectors to the fans themselves to finish it porperly so thats still to do. The fans work though so thats a good thing.

Then I went on the the Zeitronix ZT3 AFR gauge, the lambda was an easy fit to the downpipe because I made the downpipe so the sensor would be easily accessible. The cable routed along with some other stuff i'd already laid, went through the bulkhead hole I made for the ECU and threaded with the ECU harness inside the car. I plugged all the pluggy bits in and all seemed good, until I powered everything up and it was giving a static reading of 14.7, no matter what I did to fuelling. Slightly confused a quick check revealed I hadn't plugged the sensor into the harness in the engine bay LOL.

Ive been using the map file form my own car as a base, and though it runs, it runs rough and is hard to start. I knew it was running rich, which is why I wanted the ZT3 in place. I had a bit of a think over xmas and remembered I took a copy of Johnspin and Dips maps when their ECU's were fitted both cars have cams as does this one (mine is still OE). Johnspin has some cossie old skool 0-280-150-xxx injectors but Dips I was sure had similar Siemens Deka injectors to this car. I reviewed the map file and the fuelling was about 40% less than what I was using, so I loaded the map grids only from Dips file to Amrits car (handy feature in the software that) and it was immediately LOADS better. Assisted by the AFR gauge we're idling stacks better now.

Pretty sure he doesn't as he needs them out of all my lot of parts
He has, cos it ran out of fuel when Scoff mapped it and he fitted them while it was there? Maybe i'm making it up, I dunno...but whatever it runs loads better with Dips map loaded and with the AFR gauge I can tweak it well enough to get it moveable and tested enough to take it to scoff. Oil and watertight etc etc.

Dips was running Cossie greens when his was mapped. I don't know the numbers.
Stopped at 265hp due to valve bounce, needed uprated springs. I still think Scoff fitted the siemens injectors.

You should use my map
I dont have a copy of your new map, besides, I wouldnt want to down-tune it, the only way to motivate you into getting it off the drive is to pan your power figures into the dust :)

Nooooo you're right he fitted VXRs iirc

I wanted to leave mine there for him to sell for me, he said 'No doubt Ill need em for a while'

3 weeks later 'Dips needs injectors'

The only motivation I need is a time

Sadly the parts I ordered on the mostpart didnt show up in time to do anything yesterday and with ice on the floor, car and basically everywhere it was too cold to get anything done but I have managed to find a bracket for the actuator that didnt cost horrendous money. Posting for future ref, BTN Performance 773151-0002 wastegate actuator bracket for GT2860RS.

I could have made one or hacked the old one up but its a lot of time and hassle for the sake of £25 and this looks far better than a cut n shut.

Deliveries!

Started with the fuel pump as the new 044 I just fitted is razzing out fuel as a frightening rate. Surprising for an original Bosch part!

Fitted the new one and no leaks now. Whew. Also remembered to order the new pressure reference 1/8th NPT fitting for the fuelabs reg, as it just has a blanking plug at the moment.
Then I returned to the fan loom, I started with an in line blade fuse like my car, but I found some rather cool looking fuse things online and decided to give one a shot on the Red Rocket. very pleased, very neat and came with a spare 30a blade.

Terminal main power...blue for the fan feed.

With the cap on (ill secure this properly when I finish wiring)

Relay mounted up front and new sealed connectors put on the plugs to the fans...these were rotten old crimp terminals before and pulled off the ends.

So now its all in and working. I also put a sealed connector on the AUX4 trigger wire so I can take it all out without cutting wires too, because thats a pet hate of mine when people hard wire shit in. It's also nice that the catastrophe of cooker and house cables is gone! :D

So then it was...er...oh yeah....DARK. But I carried on anyway.

20170107_174408.webp

I tried up the new actuator bracket, which took facking ages to get in the right position, I had to rotate the compressor housing and all sorts, and then once it was lined up the goddamn oil return was directly obstructing so I had to take that apart too and re-position the 45° exit about a quarter of a turn anti-clockwise...so now the actuator sits right but the oil drain doesnt meet up. Brill!

Nothing like doing something you did already, again eh? FFS. Anyway, popped a P-clip on the oil feed just because they came in the post and decided it was time to quit, as it was cold, dark and damp!

Been a while since updates, mainly as I had some running problems. Everything was checking out but it would not start. Spent a day and a half meticulously going through everything but it wouldnt fire up. On a suggestion from Scoff I ripped out the plugs (again) and cleaned them up (bearing in mind that they had done 15mins running time and spark tested OK) and then heated them up on the gas stove. Refitted and bam, fired up first turn of the key. I'd always seen fouled plugs as a visible, almost "furry" covering but there had a light black coating only from running rich on first start.
Annoyed it was something so simple that cost me 2 days stressing out. Pleased it was something simple and I dont have to take it all apart again. With it running I tacked up the back end of the downpipe and managed to sneak it into the garage, under cover.

So anyway then I set about getting the rev counter working as the IGN3 output of the tacho wont drive it direct. I built the little module thing suggested by @Fordy with a relay coil but it wouldn't work and I just decided to refit the OE coil to drive the rev counter as we've done before with other cars. I'd already used the OE mount point for the coil pack though so I decided to fit the OE coil module hidden and out of the way for neatness. I wired it up temporarily to make sure the config worked, which it did...

...then made a bracket and wired it in properly. Ive mounted it down by the ABS accumulator and used the same mounting point.

Came to test the final install and it wouldn't turn over. Initial investigations led me to believe the starter motor has just packed up. I mean for FUCKS SAKE. Give me a break. I threw a mardy and packed away before I lost the plot with it.

Ordered a new starter in the following week, collected Monday evening and went out and fitted it straight away as I was impatient enough to brave the cold. It also resides under the garage roof now which makes a huge difference.

20170213_191634.webp

New starter on, cranked no problem and with a much better crank speed which is quite important for standalone. Fired up, all working again. It starts and moves under its own power now which is a big step forward.

Well done, Dave! Interesting to hear these trials and tribulations. I wonder if the Megasquirt will drive the tacho on my Alpine? Dunno...
Glad you fixed the issue with the fouled plugs. That is annoying. I get it on my Gordini Turbo - particularly when giving it to garages to work on. I tell them to push the choke in ASAP and then keep it running using the throttle, but do they heck. Instant fouled plugs and the only way to cure it is to pull them all out, which isn't easy as No.4 is right underneath the bonnet catch!
