21 Turbo 1987 Renault 21 Turbo from LV

Hello guys!

My name is Edgars and I am from Latvia (small eastern Europe country in Baltics :D) where Renault's and all other French cars aren't very popular. Basicaly old models here are non existent, but I'm one of those funny people who likes and respects old French cars. :)
My french car story started about 28 years ago, when my father bought his first car that I remember - red 1986 phase 1 Renault 21 with 2.0 liter non turbo gasoline engine. After some time when 21 were failing, he bought cherry red Renault Safrane with 2.2 liter gasoline engine. Sadly both of those cars have long since been recycled into spoons..
Ever since those days i've always loved the french angular cars of the 1980s. And approx 15 years ago I started to dream about owning myself a 5, 9, 11 or 21 Turbo version, and about 5 years ago I started irregulary looking for one of these models, but as already said at the beginning - French cars are not popular in Latvia, so getting one became quite unrealistic.

But then October 2022 came around and I saw a beautiful black R21 Turbo at our local sale site for relatively small money. A call to the seller immediately followed and an appointment was made a couple of hours later. I took my friend-mechanic with me and we went to look at it. Basically, walking around the car it was clear that I was buying it, to which my friend echoed with the words "this is a must have". For the car's years it was in excellent condition. The owner took us for a couple of laps around the territory and told that it had not been on the road since 2007 or 2008, but before he stopped using it, the car was previously repainted, a new turbine and summer tires was installed, the engine was refreshed and many other small things were done and used only original Renault parts. Also one very interesting thing - the seller had worked at the Renault dealership as a mechanic for many years and gave me an almost complete set of original Renault maintenance books. And the next day there it was - my first Renault Turbo.

Before the old owner sold the car, he put a new battery, performed a minor refresh of the brake system and wheel seats and had a technical inspection with no complaints one week before putting it up for sale.. big woooow for car that wasn't used for 15 years..

For now, the plans include:
  • restoring and repainting the brake calipers;
  • installing new brake pads;
  • replacing the timing belt;
  • water pump;
  • spark plugs;
  • eliminate minor imperfections with door locks, window, mirror and sunroof motors;
  • make an anti-rust treatment;
  • find and install Renault badges that were removed before repainting;
  • full polish and cover the car with ceramic coating.
I can't find almost any necessary parts in Latvia, so I ordered and waiting for the water pump and all badges from the French site youngtimersclassic.com and ATE brake pads from Germany.

During the season I will look for other period correct wheels and try to eliminate other small imperfections.
Maybe anyone can offer me phase 1 or phase 2 OEM 21 Turbo wheels?

I have some questions about the front calipers - why are repair kits on the left support completely different from the right support? Repair kit rubbers for the right-hand caliper are more like standard, but the rubbers for the left-hand caliper must be pressed with metal rings and there are no such repair kits.. And where do you get those repair kits with metal rings, do you have them in UK or some other countries? No one offers them in Latvia, including the Renault dealership.. :(

Welcome!

I dont know if we have anyone else from Latvia on here!

What a throughly original looking phase 1 you have!
Thanks mate! 👍

Yeah I really like that it has been kept in its original condition with no tuning parts.. :)

The old owner said that there were only 3 to 5 R21 Turbo's in Latvia before and 99% most likely and sadly this is the only one left.

Hi and welcome!

Its probably had a non-OE replacement caliper in the past. There were several brands produced them, and the workings around the sliders can be different. I have often had to use slider components from the old setup to fit newer calipers to the hangers - and not all refurb kits fit all calipers. If I am not sure the calipers being rebuilt are original i'll usually just buy ready-reconditioned calipers as they dont tend to cost that much really and you dont have the worry of snapped bleed nipples.
