Agree Tony, I am happy tackling sills and more man like fabrication but the finer thinner points need to clean it up and have a see of the real damage

Soooo long since playing with a 5 not sure on a few areas and concerns welding with the screen out or if needs bracing etc. Hopefully it may just need a custom shaped insert welding in at worst

I sold my GT Turbo in 1990!!

Great car and the start of a brilliant thread @Duncan Grier. I'm sure we can rustle up a few parts to help you ? :declare.gif:

A good welder/fabricator will get that windscreen surround sorted. Perhaps a dentmaster guy could pull that dent out of the door also? Saw a guy work wonders on my fathers Merc.

Keep the updates coming!! :drinks.gif:

Cheers mighty Steve, you know I'm more a special conversion over oem kind of guy but do have a serious urge to get this car bk to best and retain c1j and as many original features as possible

My metal working master has confirmed all the things I kind of know now having had a closer look at the real task on this one but ignoring his wise words lol

Door needs replacing imo and also has a bit of rust

The danger on this car is really letting the details take over and as most know who have done projects and restorations you always find a lot more work and costs.....along with not delaying the rs3 rwd 5

Lots to consider

Got your work cut out there mate. Big project. What's the engine side of things like? Good to go, or rebuild required?

Engine has done approx 1000 miles since rebuild, no idea at this stage if it is just cosmetic or hardware standing for so long caused any issues. Chris believed it all ok and think the turbo was refreshed also along with box rebuild. Need to confirm and make some notes

Up with son who has been sick everywhere so doing some man maths between the joys of fatherhood lol

So car DOB is 5/2/1988 meaning a big 30th is due in 5 months ;)

I sold the car 17/7/2007 returning on the 31/8/2017 so actually 10 years apart not 11 :P - dam should have noted this and collected 10 years to the day just to be sad lol

Don't expect much today other than moving into the garage and possibly get parts out of car and do an inventory

The black GTA in my avatar has been in my unbroken ownership since 20/10/90! Nearly 27 years. Have nearly put a match to it several times over the years but we are past all that now :0)

Friend come round in his RS3 and the noise and power of that thing got my mind firmly fixed in the blue rwd 5 project also...

....but back to the silver bullet

After a lot of thought wife confirmed based on all things equal to strip it

And repair the shell, full respray, jeep as many of the original bits as possible back to former glory but to retain the c1j setup

So target is its 30th and will start to strip clean and store to get car sorted and work through all areas

Expect a few question threads ;)

Wow, windscreen surround looks scary, I agree the strength of that area once you cut all the rust out is concerning, I imagine the roof will be very floppy with the front edge removed and roof lining out.
Got to be worth adding some bracing.
Will be watching with interest.

Going to sort the sills and jacking points etc 1st and do while the doors are on as a guide along with bracing before going any further. That way I know all the other areas are as strong as they should be

Roof is beyond my skills tbh and will be getting a friend to help as I'm not sure filler is going to cut it ;) lol

Big Steve depressed me confirming you can no longer buy that part to weld in boooo

Think I need to keep an eye out local for donor parts but will go new on available parts

Great work so far Mr Grier!

Regarding engine, it was fully re-built approx 1000miles before it finally came off of the road. Recon crank, new pistons and liners (standard), recon head (managed to find one not skimmed) and new valves ground in. New push-rods also fitted. Existing stronger valve springs and high lift cam went back in. Turbo was rebuilt by Adam L at the time and the carb was set up to run 16psi by @Markey Mark BD. In car boost controller was disconnected. New engine mounts were also fitted. Carb was also striped and re-built with an RTOC kit. Converted from water cooled to air cooled prior to this as the pump gave up

Gearbox was fully re-built at the same time by Mr Bean AKA Pete with brand new synchros and new clutch

Wheels were powder coated at some point, can't remember when

Bad bits i can remember - sills (inner and outer), jacking points, bumper mounts (front and rear) all need welding. OS door, front bumper and window surround needs replacing. I thought the boot be saved. Brakes need a total refurb, i always wanted to replace them as the Hi-Spec discs never sat right with me as they are Lancia discs made to fit, although stopped great! Rear calipers were replaced in 2010 i think and had little mileage (with discs, pads and new bearings)

I'll have a look for the speaker grills @Duncan Grier as i know i should have them somewhere!

@Chris Hebden

Thanks for the info, I had forgot most points :D

Should have a lot of items out the car this week and in storage and hoping to look at pulling the engine out this weekend or interior trim depending on time

Arranged for a friend to help me with the welding in particular the windscreen cradle and get him to bring his tig down

I did a nut and bolt rebuild along with the s3 spec tfsi conversion in his vx220 so only fair he helps on the Renault ;)

Making stuff and fabrication happy with......spraying and bodywork not a skill I hold yet. Have a few good friends to advise and support.

May have a go myself might just call a few favours in

I had in my mind this was the quicker of the 2 projects but rs3 looks far easier as at home making the engine and bits fit lol

Will try to get rs3 thread rolling. 1st job get old 20vt stuff out for fellow member on here and then its a big boys fabrication weekend time :)

DG
Can't believe that it actually returned with the OZ Rims on it! GG fella
