Turbo Conversion

Right, whats needed to run a turbo on a f7p

im not after silly power, say around 200 mark,

what parts do i need, etc etc,
and rough price on them too

Cheers

You could prob do a pikey style conversion which would be to use parts from others car like: rover turbo, turbo diesel IC, turbo diesel boost circuit etc etc. The cheapest it could be done for if you did all the work your self would be about £2k including mapping etc.

The power figures and spec your asking for are simliar to my conversion so hear are just some of the parts you need:

Garret T28 turbo= £600
Low comp cast turbo pistons=£250-300
IC=£100 or charge cooler=£300 (with all ancilliaries)
Boost circuit and pipe work= £100-£150 and t/b adapter and large induction filter
Front mounted oil cooler=£110
Turbo HG= £100
Uprated clutch= £120-£300
Custome turbo exhaust mani=£250=£300
Custom down pipe=£200
Map sensor=£50-£100
Dump valve/BOV=£100
Oil feed to turbo=£50
Oil return depending on method (mine is standalone elec oil pump =£80) or straight return.
Bigger injectors/hi flow=£100-300
Custome Mapping=£300-600 or generic turbo map=£200
Uprated or new crank shaft bearings=£???
New or refurbed oil pump and spray jets=£100

Then you got to think about rebuilding and replacing everything ie: cam belt, aux belt, rebuild head, oil seals etc etc. Then you got to factor in the time an effort you need to put into this!

Its just a massive job and its the reason why there are less than 10 in the UK.

The above does not inculde everything you need.

Or you could just buy mine?? lol ;-)

as above but upto 220bhp you can run standard pistons..plus a thick gasket...

i was looking to do this also, ive got 2 spare valver engines sitting around, is it worth doin sould i stay n/a, was maybe thinking throttle bodies.

Its up to you.

Have a ride in a tuned NA car and have a ride in turbo car and see what you like best.

A fully converted NA car with bodies, cams and high comp pistons is awesome (had a ride in a 172 cup with bodies) but once you feel the torque surge from a turbo coupled with the noise you wont look back.

bet theres less than ten running..

but there are great...but on a budget i'd go bike bodies..

for the cost of off the shelf bodies you can have a turbo...

If you count R5 Turbo converted clios then there might be more than 10, but im sure there are less than 10 genuine F7P converted lumps......... in the UK anywany.

its an open ended question though

depends what power your after..upper limit..
where you use the car..
and whether you do the work or drive in drive out..

but for around 3.5k i think you could have 320bhp without much fuss..

or around 3.5k on a n/a motor you get upto 250bhp..

no contest on the power/torque front..

but an open ended question on which is more fun/gives you the biggest smile..

such a capable chassis at the end of the day its deserves more power..

yeah...done right can run forged pistons standard head cams etc

gt28rs....front mounted intercooler etc..run at higher fastchip..should see over 300bhp..

just need to get the right bits at the right price..

yes i think so...loads of cars are run every day with a turbo..

there not unreliable at all really..but as you will see here and else where most are being built by people with a little knowledge that are learing there way around engines and not just turbo's...

so things will be wrong/missed etc..as with anything they can be reliable..

just needs work..but most are bolted to old boxes old suspension etc...so some failures are going to happen..also once you go up to 320bhp engine wise others costs are then involved that won't be on a 220bhp n/a car..

but mines been faultless at over 250bhp now for about three months used daily..might have a few problems again if i get it mapoped soon and run 380bhp..but it is a test car really..once ironed out it will be a fantastic cheap supercar...

more than 10 in uk easy, BBPT and KTEC have offered it as a conversion since the early 00'ies, but as neil says not many running and not many on forums, i rekon there are plenty out there tho :D

mines done 5k since i has it and i has died alot but now i have got on top of the issues touch would its been fine
