Then I decided to attack the bulkhead for some cleanup. The bit that holds the rack and coils was kinda awkward so I took it out, going to get that blasted.





Seamed around the top of the turrets after a clean too



Then flipped it over and went for it with the knotted wheels - the black staining you can see here is from the fire in the engine bay in the late 90's, which led it to the scrap yard I bought it from in '98.



Much better

Last day on the 21, I carried on the cleanup back under the car.





This brace across the transmission tunnel looked like it might be hiding some nasty so off it came







Cleaned up, treated





Welded back in





This is tough, dirty work... I was flipping between three different grinders, using one while the other 2 were outside cooling off.



The knotted wheels, while good for this task, the absolutely viscious. They shed the metal threads and the shoot off like tiny, stabby little missiles. Where to they go? EVERYWHERE....



Including in my arm! Ow. This is through the sleeve of my hoodie! I even had one whack me on the lip so hard it made me yelp lol. Obv I am wearing gloves and glasses, and I donned a mask for the dusty parts. I can still taste R21 seam sealer now haha!



Good progress overall over the xmas hols I think, especially with all the other car stuff I got done (and even something on the house!)

@Chris74# this is a proper spot welder. It actually tripped my garage breakers when we first fired it up lol!!

Ha ha ha!! That looks like a proper job! The spot welding certainly looks a lot easier than trying to MIG weld everything. Is it?

I had to wire wheel my subframe in lock down as no blasters were open. I used it while leaning on my kneeling board. All the spikes ended up in the kneeling board...and my knee's every time i used it after!

pparently according to the label my MIG welders inverter is LGBT so maybe on weekends it goes pink or welds rainbows or something

Basically, yes. Clamp, squeeze, burn it, done. Metal fused. It wouldnt work for repair patches though. You need overlap.

Yes, a lot easier. Just can take a while as spotwelders overheat. So I tend to try and do other things whilst I'm doing it.

amazing work Dave. Real good progress. 1 point, As you know, I am not a pro, but I would personally rethink the seam sealer over where you have brazed. It just seems like an unnecessary water trap to me. But, like I said, that is just a novices observation that could be wrong.

Isn’t the brazed joint basically old school seam sealer, effectively you’ve just seam sealer’d the seam sealer? Belt and braces approach.
doubt it would act as a water trap, pretty sure it’s a bonded screen so once the screen adhesive is laid I doubt it would make much difference to water flow in the area anyway?

That was my impression of brazing. But you are probably correct regards to the water flow after the screen is in.

The brazing is a sealed joint, seam sealer isn't needed. But I'd always prime before any seam sealing. Most rust is caused from seams that are sealed at factory before any paint is put on the shell (other than the e coat). I always fill seams with as much rust primer I can then seam seal then I'll add any paint/stonechip etc as per it was originally.

Put a bit of the seam sealer over it afterwards, not sure if this was really needed but I did it anyway lol. This is all hidden anyway by the windscreen and door seals.

Back on it again. Decided to takle this massive chunk of reinforcement across the back, it's a super awkward shape and I couldn't get behind it to clean and treat....so I hacked it off haha. It can go for a proper shot blast it's heavily rusted, but quite thick so it shouldnt need any repairs other than welding back on.








Glad I removed it, it needs a good work over under there.




Got stuck in to it, lost another chunk of skin to the knotted wheel!

Decided to stop cleaning up when my arms were ready to fall off and I was fed up of tasting rust lol, I was low on BH Hydrate 80 but hoped i'd got enough to coat what I had gone over...










This took longer than I thought, working the Bilt in with the brush properly.







After/Before - quite a difference.



I ran out of time to let it dry and prime it, i'm going to brush on the primer underneath, as 1)it'll be thicker, 2)I can get into the tight spots better and 3)I'll be gravitexing over it anyway so finish doesn't matter. I may try and do that one evening so it dries before my next weekend sesh.
