21 Turbo The Scrapyard Quadra

I have been waiting for the infamous 12v engine for the past 16 years..
Soooooooooooooooooo, try not to faint or anything.

I masked off the cylinders and flipped the block upside down and blasted/toothbrushed out the oil drains of gunk

Has a bit of a clean around and tried to remember what I had done and hadn't done, then had a sort through some bits and brackets to send for powder coat, and decided to try the liner ringing. The idea is to fit a wire into the liner top to bite into the head gasket and i'd already decided to try it with copper - it's quite soft and easy to work into place, it'll crush down and squish out to fill the gaps and as you do that it work hardens and should form a good tight seal. If that doesnt work i'll try some much harder welding wire...we'll see.
It wasnt as hard as I thought it would be butting the ends up, I cut the wire then skimmed the end down flat with a dremel a tiny bit at a time until it fitted in snug.

Seems to have worked out OK. I have a new, but not servicable head gasket to trial fit with so i'll do a gentle clamp-down of that and see where the wire rings press in to the fire rings I think.

I've also been putting off drilling a broken water pump bolt out (for like ten years lol) so I sorted that out too and cleaned up the mess, also chased an M7 tap down all the other holes to clean up the threads a bit.

Decided not to fit the water pump yet as I need to trim the spring capsule receiver down first.

I also made a cardboard roof replica of the roof of the 21. Why? you will see soon enough.

I want exif info on every one of those pictures. I need X And Y co ordinates , date and exposure.
Considering its in the garage I just built and the cupboards I put up a month ago are in the background, you should be able to engage your pea sized brain for long enough to put 2 and 2 together :)

In the end the cardboard roof mock up wasn't needed. I had found a guy in France willing to chop the roof off a breaker for me complete with rear screen and the bit under the rear window. He was based in Libourne near Bordeaux which is 750 miles away so I've been waiting for a convenient courier or similar friend willing to help out for the last three months. Sadly the only chance that came up was my mate Lucasz was in Bordeaux one weekend but Christian (roof guy) was away that weekend. Dammit.

So Christian already thought I was a lunatic rosbif in the first place and I reckon he thought I was messing him about (i hope not though) but he messaged me anyway to say he was visiting his son in Villiers saint Frederic between the 9th and 12th September. I built the cardboard roof to see how I could transport the roof with the Volvo, towing dolly, roof rack or whatever because VSF is literally half the distance away. In the end as I was chatting shit in my 21 crew Whatsapp group Amrit offered to grab his works van and come with me, as the under-rear window section is the repair panel we need for the red rocket. So...I booked up the tunnel and we did a 756-mile road trip to pick up a 21 solid roof skin with no sunroof hole complete with roof lining last Tuesday. Left at 4:20, got home at 9pm.

So, there you go. A solid roof skin conversion in the making. Partly in keeping with the plans for the car and partly cos I'm sick to fuck of the sunroof leaking and mopping up water if its left outside in the rain!

I heard Dave was just going to put it in place and let global warming thermally join it, after all, this project was a slow burner from the start :grin.gif:

In all seriousness though love your attitude towards cars and the effort you put in (y)

Its an "Ongoing concern" and has been since I dragged it out the scrappy 20 years ago lol

I'm really looking forward to getting on with it especially now the V6 is sorted and on the road and the garage is pretty much built. I hope I can do it justice :-)

Nothing much to report other than hanging the roof up, it was a bit of a storage challenge especially with roof skins being delicate so up high and out the way seemed the best plan until my windscreen guy comes to take the screen out.
