Renault 11 Turbo Phase 2 Restoration

Awesome thread and great to see one of these cars again. Back in the day I had the Escort RS Turbo and my best mate had the 11 Turbo, we had such a laugh in those cars.

Loving the 5 too, wanted a Raider so badly, actually id still buy one now.

I've still got a 9Turbo, I'll take you for a spin in it when its restored if you take me out in the Clio :-)

Managed to grab a few hours in the garage this morning, so I had a chance to fit the Power Steering rack that was delivered this week, but first I had to get it from the dog house.. :grin.gif: I've been after a R19 16v PAS rack for a while and have managed to source one from a guy who is breaking an R19 16V at the moment, but it was at the back of my mind that a 2nd hand rack will probably still need to be refurbished... so I scoured the old t'Internet and managed to find a standard R19 unit on eBay that had already been refurbished so I had a punt as it appears to be identical looking to a 16v Item. I guess the turns per lock could be different for the "sports" model, but at the moment I'm more interested in checking that everything fits so can make my final decisions later. I compared the new rack to the old non assisted R11 Turbo Rack and it certainly looked to be the right length:

When I sourced all the other R19 16v stuff I made sure I got hold of the OE R19 16v PAS Rack mounting brackets, I compared them to the OE 11 Turbo items and saw that they were slightly different, so decided to change them. You can see the small differences here, the R19 items on the right are slightly shorter in height than the 11T items and the bottom fixing hole is elongated:IMG_3568.webp IMG_3569.webp IMG_3570.webp IMG_3571.webp Fitting these new brackets was easy as everything was totally interchangeable and simply bolted on. Getting the PAS rack into position though was another game.. it was a right sod :aggressive.gif:I ended up having to remove one of the mounts I'd just fitted to give me a little more "wriggle room." Once the rack was in position though it all bolted into place fine and all of the R19 16v PAS pipes just bolted in place. Total plug & play! I re-fitted the turbo downpipe to see if there was still room for the exhaust to wriggle it's way out of the engine bay, and thankfully everything looks good there as well! :DIMG_3572.webp IMG_3573.webp IMG_3574.webp

However there was one sticking point...:( The drive fitting on the 11T rack was a splined shaft and the R19 unit has 2 flats on a shaft so I'm going to have to get round that somehow. Also the R19 PAS Drive shaft sits further into the car than the 11T unit so I'll have to figure that one out as well. I figure I'll be able to do all that when I remove the engine to give me greater access to the fitting. In anticipation of that I decided to remove the drive shafts from the car. I took a picture to compare the 11T drive shafts with the R19 16v items I sourced. (The 11T items are very top & bottom of this picture)

IMG_3576.webp You can see that the N/S Drive Shafts are comparable thickness's, but the 11T item has a counterbalance weight (I think) fitted to it? Anyone know why Renault did this?? The N/S drive shafts are totally different thickness's with the R19 units looking very thin in comparison... I think this isn't correct and the R19 shaft I have must have been replaced at some time with a standard item?? I think I'm going to get the OE 11 Turbo drive shafts refurbished and stick with them.

Thank you for reading. :)

I would of though that renault made different thicknesses and added weights to keep the driveshafts balanced, reduction in torque steer is the benefit of this. You should be able to strip the shafts down and possibly rebuild them with a mix of parts suiting your needs, ie different inner and outer couplings/joints. I had to do the same many years ago in a 1.2 clio shell, hopefully you can do the same?

This is truly great work Steve, I wonder if it's possible to do something similar on a C1J'd 5???
We'll find out when I start project ST Cup sometime in the future.. ;) Depending on how this goes I'd definitely like to have a go at fitting it to the Cup Car as it would make it better on track :)

Is it possible to rebuild these drive shafts yourself then Adey? I thought you needed specialist tools etc to fix them?

Steve, speak to John at Dave Mac Propshafts for any driveshaft needs - does a lot of work for me from replacement bits at a bloody fair price to the custom shafts and high speed gaiters etc (vag oem ones deform at above 150mph on the VX and use the ones off the Formula audi things think it 200rpm the shaft starts to ballon iirc)

Mention me if you speak to him and I can always have a chat to him direct if you need anything special ;) - 02476683239

They are yet to let me down on the mixture of fun things I turn up with :) they do the gripper diff stuff also and can make most things if not available

Steve - what is the pas pump from?
Hi Stotty,

The PAS pump is from a 5 Monaco set up including all of the ancillary equipment (such as twin belt crank pulley, alternator and PAS pump bracket). Getting hold of these parts would be a nightmare on their own, so if you're thinking of doing it, I'd recommend you for the Clio Valver PAS rack with an electric power steering pump secured in the scuttle panel on the O/S of the engine bay switched on and off by a big fat relay actuated by your front fog light switch ;)
I've got pictures of a build like this, let me see if I can find them for you..
