Renault 11 Turbo Phase 2 Restoration

IIRC the R19 shafts are just a little longer, not noticeable until you fit them and drive off and it feels utterly horrible through the steering. Be careful! You might wanna look at a R19 subframe and wishbones to make the track right for the driveshafts or something! (or stick with the 11 shafts)
Note, this is only a distant memory from fitting R19 components to my R9 many, many years ago. Worth checking though.

I've got pictures of a build like this, let me see if I can find them for you..
Cheers o fountain of knowledge. :drinks.gif:

:read.gif: FOUND EM! :grin.gif: These photo's are from one of our French Friends called Bruno Molet or Megabytes and his epic OE++ Raider Rebuild and how he fit Power Steering to his 5 GT Turbo.

So first you need to get yourself a Power Steering Rack. I believe this one is from a Clio 1.8 16v. You'd be surprised by how many Renault's from this era shared the common subframe found on the 5, Clio, Megane, 19 etc so you can take your pick. I know that one UK who has done this used a Megane Coupe rack as it had the least amount of turns lock to lock:

Then you need to fit the Power Steering rack to your car. Make sure you get the mounting brackets from your donor car, as the mounts are slightly different to standard 5GTT ones. You can see that Bruno has used the same Megane/19 rear engine mount as I've used in my R11 Turbo to give the power steering rack the clearance it needs:

Next you will need the means to drive the PAS rack. Bruno decided to use an Electric Power Steering pump from a 21 (I think) as he wanted to keep the car as Renault based as possible, however you can use a Citroen Saxo/Peugeot 106 Pump which are more commonly available. He Mounted it in the scuttle panel the opposite side to the battery:

4.webp
To switch the PAS pump on and off, Bruno used one of his unused dash switches (quite probably the front Fog Light) to switch a big relay to power the PAS pump:

Next he got some hydraulic lines made for the fluid:
6.webp
Then it was just a case of plumbing it all in:

Had a night in the garage on Friday and continued to look at the power steering set up. I ordered a couple of second hand Renault Megane Power Steering Bottles off eBay, one with the Pipes still attached, and one with the Bracket:

It looks like my luck continues with this build, as there seems to be enough room on the left hand side of the engine bay to mount the PAS bottle in-between the Expansion Tank and the Brake Fluid Reservoir. I think I'm going to be able to cut a section off the OE bracket and then rivet it to the inner wing, just below the manufacturing plates:
IMG_3578.webpIMG_3579.webp
I held the bottle in the rough location it will be mounted, and again it looks as though the OE pipes will be able to be modified slightly to fit the existing pipework in the engine bay. I think that I may have a bit of a jiggle to ensure the coolant pipes will still be able to be routed cleanly, but I'll figure that out when the time comes You can see that the front pipe, already looks as though it's heading to the PAS Pump:
IMG_3583.webp
The rear pipe again is heading in the right direction for the rack fluid return, and even has a nattly little kink in it to ensure it misses the drive belts:

I had a bit of luck recently and managed to find a complete brand new set of R11 Turbo OE Wheel centre covers for a little price so snapped them up:

Tried one in one of my Alloys and they look smart :)

Thanks for reading

hows did you find those covers :) nice work again steve
You'd be amazed what you can find on the old t'interweb when you have the Renault part number. The guy advertising these was just advertising them with their part number and of course if I'd have searched R11 Wheel Centres, I wouldn't have found them.. :grin.gif:

The OE wheel centres are a slightly different shade of silver compared to what I had the wheels sprayed, but I think the contrast looks OK so am going to go with it. :)

Aye, it's amazing what you find with a little ingenuity. I have brand new quad-headlights, a brand new strut brace, brand new shocks all around and brand new lowering springs for my 9 Turbo and in total, I don't think I spent more than £200 on that little lot.

This weekend I carried on stripping the car and pulled both front wings off to have a look see what was lurking beneath:
3.webp
On the Nearside Front the sill looked pretty solid with only some light surface rust present:
4.webp
But on the Offside front sill, following a bit of poking and prodding, I found this.. :ireful2.gif:
2.webp
I also removed the brake reservoir bottle and found this:

So I'm now thinking I'm going to get the paint stripped with a method to ensure all the under seal is removed at the same time to ensure I get to the bottom of areas like that shown above underneath the sealant that look a bit grotty.

Thanks for reading :)

Looks pretty good under where brake fluid bottle is fella, my 11 had a small hole rusted through, even though it had previously had a small patch welded in it has a slightly larger one there now. Suspect they all leak a little fluid on the inner wing over time and rusts.

This...except I usually find it's caused by topping fluid up when it gets low and people/garages not draining the fluid when fitting new brakes. Pushing the piston back into the calipers makes the reservoir overflow all over the inner wing, that strips the paint, and Mr Iron Oxide races in and shits everywhere :'(

Managed to sneak a trip over to see the guys at Enviro Strip UK today and was really impressed with their attitude and results they showed me. It was full with all sorts of cars that people are in the process of rebuilding. There were loads of Mini's and Mk2 Escorts, to brand new Fiesta Bodyshells from a rally team that want them dipping to remove the 50kg of sound deadening they come with from the factory!!

Ended up booking the 11 in with them to be dropped off on Saturday 16th August 2014 for the whole shooting match:
  • Stage 1 - Paint removal using pyrolysis
  • Stage 2 - De-rusting
  • Stage 3 - Protective Coating
  • Stage 4 - 2 Pk Etch Primer Coating
So that now gives me 3 and a bit weeks to finish stripping it all down...... AAARGH?! PANIC!! :help.gif:

Would love that doing.

Not sure I wanna foot the bill though lol

Over the last few weeks I've continued to strip the 11 down ready for the Sheep-Dip as Kris calls it ;)
I've not found anything else that looks nasty that makes me worry yet and actually think getting rid of all the little bits of surface rust underneath will be great for the car.... fingers crossed! o_O
IMG_3653.webp
Certainly the brake lines all look well overdue a replacement!

Then on Monday night I had a couple of hours free so decided to whip the engine out:

GONE!

Had a bit of luck today from my local Renault Dealer. Was picking up a few R11 turbo bits they managed to track down for me and the Parts Manager lent me a copy of his old Parts Book, pre Dialogys!
IMG_3752.webp
As you can imagine it's all in here, and I'll be having a good read of this over coming weeks checking part numbers!
