Renault 11 Turbo Phase 2 Restoration

Whats the projected cost?

Not really looked at that yet, was just discussing with my mate Jez last night in the pub after a smashing little drive out in our 5GTT and Uno Turbo (respectively) and we were talking about the 11 Turbo project and he planted the seed in my mind about using EFI on it.

Steve - I'm with the others on this one unless you're future proofing the 11, the carb is a great piece of kit and in some ways is superior to EFI, but in other way's not so much. What are your main reasons for thinking going down the EFI route? I'm assuming the C1J absolutely has to remain.

Yeah the C1J is remaining, but I was thinking about continuing my OE+ ideas with the 11 Turbo and trying to do a real stealth EFI integration kind of like Renault might have done if they decided to fit it to the C1J from the factory?? Was thinking about Fuel Economy and Drive-ability reasons really, but given that the general consensus is to stick with the Carb i'll go that way! :) Thank for your honest opinions guys! :)

Had a few hours in the garage yesterday and pulled the steering rack off to compare with a Clio 1.8 Valver Power Steering Rack I got hold of a few years ago, seems to be about 30mm too short so I'm in touch with a guy to get a genuine 19 16v Rack.

Nipped to my spares garage tonight and brought back all the R19 16v Front Axle stuff to have a compare with the existing kit (Wishbones, Hubs, Driveshafts, Brakes etc) and the R19 Discs are definitely bigger thank the 11 kit so I'll need to check it will fit under the OE 14" wheels.

If you're going to EFI it then you should just stick an F4R in there. I have an engine loom and non-coded/unlocked ECU, and a cable throttle body if you wanna try that. I've wrestled with the same decision over the 9T, really fancied a rapid F conversion in there, but in the end I think cos it's so rare I'll stick with carb and a C1J. Plus now I have a carb expert on the payroll, eh Briggsy? ;)

c1j , could you not go mechanical fuel and fit the drive on the front of the block ? did some Renault fives have mechanical delivery ? or would that not be possible ?

Had a few hours in the garage tonight and had a look at the R19 16v Front Hubs/Brakes/Discs/Strut; and wanted to compare them to the OE 11 Turbo kit already on the car. As I've already mentioned, I want this car to be a full OE 11 Turbo as much as possible, but want to address some of the things that need improvement. Top of that list is the braking system as I reckon a boat anchor and a length of chain would be a better option than the brakes are at the moment... :negative.gif: however I want to make sure that I can still get the Original 14" wheels on the car.

Whipped the wheel off and took a picture of the current set-up which looks pretty much the same as a 5GTT:

I took off the complete hub assembly and strut and then broke out one of my refurbished 11 Turbo alloys to see how the fit looked. This is the OE 11 Turbo set up:

and this is the 19 16v set up:

It fits ok, but is certainly close.... (need to make sure the wheel weights aren't in the wrong place otherwise they'll catch):

When I compared the two I found that the discs are 20mm bigger in diameter (which should help with the stopping power) but the brake calipers are identical. When I looked a little harder I saw that the pad carriers are larger on the 19 16v Set Up to allow for the larger disc (perhaps this could be a useful upgrade for some of you guys with 5GTT's that don't want to fit the TXI set up?):

I also compared the hub's themselves and found (as you would expect) that the 19 16v set up was a lot beefier around the bearing - 11 Turbo:

19 16v:

I found that pretty much everything else I had was IDENTICAL to the 19 16v set up (Driveshafts, Wishbones, Shocks) but the shock top mount was a little different.

So I'm going to need a new set of 258mm Brake Discs, does anyone have any recommendations on a good make??

Thanks for reading :)

Mate, the Raider has never been so smooth running since you helped me with the rebuild! Idles at 900 rpm no problem.

Ha, it was more a rhetoric question to help you decide between carb & efi ;)

EFI is superior of course, but for the cost vs gain to install it to a C1J, it's not worth it, imho. If you're chasing big numbers, then fair game, there is only so far the carb will fuel for after all, but then some may argue that it's easier & more worthwhile to fit a larger/modern engine (eg, F-series) instead, with EFI already present, and go from there.

Ignition wise, that's another story. If only Xenon would've let me test the aeiP...
