Alpine R8 GT Turbo Too?

If you take the plug leads off one at a time you should be able to find out which cylinder. Has it lost a stemseal or two?? have you checked the valve clearances??
I pulled the plug leads one at a time (a shocking experience). Cylinder #2 is defintely the source of the ticking. I put different plug in cyl 2 and still got ticking. I retested the compression in #2 and it was 160 psi just like the other three. I checked the valve clearance and it was 0.01in on the exhaust valve instead of 0.008in spec value. I re-adjusted it and the motor is still ticking.

To recap, the motor was running fine with no ticking or smoking before I removed the carb to re-jet and increase the AFR under boost. The ONLY thing I removed and replaced was the carb. So the most likely cause of the ticking would be that something fell into the intake manifold and got sucked in to #2 cylinder. But, it didn't affect compression.

I'm ready to remove the cylinder head unless one of you has better suggestion.

Or it’s a leak on the manifold somewhere? They have a habit of ticking??

But don’t forget, you’re dealing with early 19th century technology here, so don’t expect it to run like a Lexus. Get in and get some miles on the old girl!
Yes she's an old girl but I don't want her to have a stroke!

get a video of the ticking? if it was something in there the ticking would be there with it firing or not. carb base gasket? manifold gasket? put a bore scope in before whipping the head ofI'll post a video.
I'll post a video tomorrow.

Good point about ticking every stroke vs only when firing. I didn't have the manifold off so I don't think that's involved. I don't understand how a carb base gasket could affect a single cylinder.

Here's a photo of the spark plugs. #2 is second from the right. It looks colder than the other but no oil on it.

I've thought about a borescope. It's probably worth the money to avoid removing and refitting the head.

Just running through the bits that could tick... Manifold gaskets do blow though, could be a coincidence, it may have been on its way and now you are listening for it 🤷‍♂️

Amazon phone/bore scope may be ok for this.

Damn you guys are good! The manifold gasket was blown below cyl #2 exhaust port. The cause was my warped exhaust manifold flange.

I'll get the flange ground flat and a new gasket and I'm back in business. That's a big relief after expecting the worst.

TurboRenault does it again!

Actually, while we're at it is there any trace of oil in the inlet ports at all ?? You've got the tick, but what about the smoke .....
