Twingo John's £150 Twingo Extreme Trackday Project

No going back now... Well I could but I'm not..

Was just going to jack it up and maybe drain the oil and it just snowballed from there. Oil and coolant out, gearbox oil to go and disconnect driveshafts, exhaust and loom and out it comes.

Chipping away at this over lunchtimes inbetween rain showers, basically just the engine mounts left and a few wires/pipes I've missed on the quick fly around disconnecting. Hopefully get it out this weekend!

Will get everything out the bay, give it a good clean and paint. Might even drop subframe whilst its all out and give that a clean too then the fun can begin putting the new one back in.

Been slacking crossposting the videos so two for the price of one:

Season 3 will officially kick off probably next month with what is currently an hour long video about pulling the engine out. Also got one in progress for making DIY door cards, then rest of season will cover getting the engine in and running.

Forgot to paint the T piece so that's had a coat of primer and trying to see whether I can get this R5 GT Turbo rad in a sensible place. Also checking intercooler placement but definitely needs cutting into the cross bar to get it higher and flush out the way of the bumper.

Not a great deal of airflow to the rad where it is so might try other side.

Nearly an hour long video for DIY engine removal fans. Only second time I've ever removed an engine and the first time doing it somewhat properly with the right equipment.

Got a few more edited and uploaded which is handy because I'm stuck in america at the moment with covid 😑

Swapped out the old Extreme steering rack with @Adeys old GT one, not much difference beyond a fractionally shorter lock-to-lock ratio as far as I can remember and a few thousand less miles. The original was on 123k and I think this one significantly less

Not sure how well the gtt rad will work on your setup mate. They are quite borderline on a gtt, with large fmic i had to go for the larger diesel radiator to keep temps in check. Id see if you can go for something a bit wider.

What you want is a 182 rad in there @CreweTube, I have one... make me an offer :D proven at 270+bhp and only started to struggle with high ambient temps and 300+bhp

Yep the rack was in the 50k region when i removed it im sure.

I did wonder given the size, 45 days till its supposed to be on track (albeit a mini meet at Curborough so only a couple mins sprint at a time) and got a lot to do so might slap it in for now and send it and deal with it later.

This car will be half yours at this current rate. Gutted I missed a guy on FB giving away two whilst I was stuck in LA with the rona, might take you up on it if I don't do the above short term.

Started doing my first ever timing belt and water pump change, thought it would be easy being on an engine stand until I found that I'd tightened the stand up onto the clutch cover plate and either bent some of the fingers or they were bent already when I tried to turn the engine over to find TDC.

Out came the hoist again, whipped the cove rplate off and this is what greeted me.

At least the engine turns by hand now but I had banked on not changing the clutch before a day at Curborough next month as I knew I wouldn't be able to bed anything in as the MOT expired last week 😬🙄🙃

That clutch looks pretty old, i'd change that while its apart. I'd only not change one if I knew how old it was/how much use its had since it was replaced. It wont need bedding in, just slam a new one in and itll be fine. A GT clutch should be pretty cheap I think the last one I had was under £50 for the kit :)

I got a flywheel, clutch cover and clutch off a lower mileage GT from a breakers for £30, need to check the actual clutch plate for state but running out of time/money so might slap it in and send it for at least Curborough and then re-assess later when I inevitably take it all back out again.

Sadly clutch kits are no longer under £50...

Somewhat amazingly, lining the clutch plate up by eye the gearbox just slotted on first time with no waggling. Didn't even record it for YouTube as wasn't expecting it to go first time 😭

Just starter to go on and maybe the loom and in she goes.

Then the pain will truly begin..
