5 GT Turbo F4Rt - hopefully the correct decision

Lol your slacking, you don't need an exhaust lol

I know, lost the will this last week. Been trying to secure a new job. Had my final interviews yesterday so fingers crossed. Hoping I’ll be put on gardening leave if/when I hand my notice in which should give me a month to sort car.

I went with a eBay/Chinese Honda style rad in the end to give me a bit more room to keep my boost hose run to intercooler as it was before. A lot of the Honda turbo boys use these to good effect so let’s hope its good enough. I also ordered a fan but realised that it’s only a low CFM rating so I’ll send that straight back and purchase a decent SPAL unit.

Bit of an update. I’ve bought a few final things to get the car fired up. Thanks to @James5 I bought some fuel rail connectors from KTEC, they should be here Monday.

I’ve ordered a swirl pot that fits under the car with the various AN6 and AN8 fittings. I’ve already got the lift pump and bracket so will get all that fitted this week. Looks to be plenty of room where the spare wheel used to sit. I’ve also found the campus filler neck I bought years ago so I can fit that also.

Need to pop over to Forge to get some water hoses/connectors etc. Also sorted the turbo oil return.

The final purchase is a fan, I’ve found a SPAL one that looks to be just the ticket.

Mocked up the Honda rad, I think it’ll be fine. I just need to make a few amendments with an angle grinder lol.

I reckon it’ll be running by next weekend at the latest.

Had a good afternoon ticking off jobs, my back is fucked now but never mind. Tomorrow I’ll have a supplies day as need some bolts from fasteners to fit down pipe to turbo as well as water hoses for rad.

Fitted the campus filler, wish I hadn’t bothered now. It rubs on rear wheel so either going to have to run a small spacer or put the reserve tank back in.

Next I went to town on the front rail with an angle grinder so I could sit rad back a couple of mm and to sit lower as I need to get fan in and potentially run a boost hose in front of engine. In Davis DIY style I went to town with the Hammerite.

I’ve fully fitted exhaust manifold and gasket now too, plumbed in turbo oil return also. Just need to cut to length and use some p clips to keep it away from down pipe/manifold heat.

Mission is first fire by the weekend.

Out of action now for a day or two, I had a cortisone injection in my dodgy right hip this morning so need to rest for 24/48hrs.

Sorted rad placement and water hoses yesterday. Turbo oil feed and return all done too. Intercooler mocked up and tested with grille and bumper which is all good, I just need to fix all in place.

SPAL fan arrived and fits nicely,

I am going to have to cut a 60mm hole in drivers side wheel arch tub right at the front to run intercooler to TB boost hose.

Final thing to do is sort swirl pot and lift pump and ready to fire.

See if you cant make some shrouding up to force air across that rad. You wouldnt believe how much difference it can make.

Yeah that’s a good point and we were discussing the merits of having a gap or no gap between rad and cooler. The same set up worked fine on the C1J, both water temps and inlet temps were good however not sure with F4R.

The only issue is I’m not sure how the shrouding would fit given there is minimal space. Not only that how to make/design shroud.

Any hints/tips/thoughts ?

I would be looking at a sheet of thin polycarb to the left of the rad, and simply placing it there will do more than not having anything at all. I would do the same to the right. If you can make any sort of channel at all to "funnel" the air towards the rad all the better.

My cars past is questionable at the best of times so when a boost hose needs to run in a certain spot shit has to give way, like this tagging/VIN plate lol.

At least I’ll have a nice neat boost hose run now though.

Need to order a few more hoses. A 45 degree and then a reducer off throttle body but that should be all sorted then.
