Clio Big Steve's RB Clio 182 Cup Restoration

I take it you'd rather a 182 engine for originality. The shell didn't come with it then. Phase 1 was the best, I believe the head had bigger ports

Yes I got two engines with the car and thought they were both 182's The original engine's Head Gasket let go so was in a bit of a state, so cleaned up the secondary engine (thinking it was also a 182) but now i'll concentrate on the Original engine.

To be honest @bloke is going to go over the engine top to bottom, so I'm confident it'll be good when I'm done.

Exhaust ports are bigger on the phase 1 but it's one of those things where people think it's better to have a big exhaust port but it's the other way round.

My lad is just about to build a flow bench and start doing some head work but we are getting a car to use as a development car so will be running phase 1 and 2 head on the same engine to show the differences in the two, personally I'm confident the phase 2 will be the better performing head.

Didn't Andy Cook of hill climb fame go into this year's ago. Made up his own flow bench and worked on different heads? Pretty sure it showed it didn't need much porting for gains, and no point going too much on them as it didn't make that much of a difference.

I always thought the Phase 2 172 and 182 engines were the same save for ECU mapping and exhaust manifold, so i'd happily fit a later 172 lump unless you're anally retentive about having the original lump from the car.

Easy day today, just a case of fitting the freshly painted bulkhead matting back into the car:

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaang on a minute... what's this under the chassis rail in the engine bay...?? :search.gif:IMG_6465.webp

OH BALLS!!!! :ireful2.gif: Had better treat that now before it (no doubt) gets worse in years to come.... you know the score by now. Thankfully my best man @jas_racing came round to give me a hand today.. so I soon had him roped in.. :grin.gif:

Whilst the paint was going on, I took the opportunity to change the particle filter, which I think was ready for a change...

And we also changed the clutch cable after some advanced crawling into god awful spaces by @jas_racing:

Gave the new track rods a quick lick of paint to protect them:

And then finally made a new high performance head gasket:

So we could then bolt the old engine back together loosely to allow it to be shipped up to @bloke so he can continue to work his magic:

All in all a BLOODY lot done today!! Things are progressing nicely..

Thanks for reading :)

you got that ready quick!! good job i've made more space today!!

pass. but as a rule 16valve heads don't need ports opening up much at all. been looking into messing with valves to reduce crossflow during overlap, theory is good and allows you to run more overlap as well.
