Clio Big Steve's RB Clio 182 Cup Restoration

So just like Mr @Ricardo ive been getting into biking over summer 🚴‍♂️ and have obtained all the gear... but as they saying goes.. still missing the idea 😆.

Ive been looking at options of how I can mount a bike on the roof of my Megane so I can take the bike away easily without disassembling it all and then putting it in the back.

Had a couple of great rides along the coast this year in Kent and Gt Yarmouth so I’ve certainly got the bug for it.

So why am I telling you all this in my Clio 182 Thread?? Well along with looking At roof rack options for my Meggy, I also started to have a tentative look for kit for my Clio as well.

Found a dedicated Thule Foot mount kit on eBay for the Clio for 14.99 so had a punt on that, and then it all spiralled from there looking for the common Thule 754 Foot kit to go with it, bars bike mounts etc..

A bloke in Peterborough I saw was advertising the Thule 754 foot kit on eBay so I made a cheeky offer of £35 which he accepted so I toddled round to pick it up. Whilst there he asks me if I’ve got bars, and bike mounts...?

Needless to say, a bit of negotiations and £150 later, I left with everything else I needed to mount 2 bikes to the roof of the Clio.

Today I finally got all the bits together and mounted it all on the roof of the Clio in the poxy rain.. 🌧 EDB824C4-3E29-4D88-ADD8-96AAB92AEECF.webp

For anyone like me who’s not had any experience of Thule roof racks before, let me tell you their kit is excellent and really fits well to the car!!

The feet are specifically moulded to your car (so long as you get the right kit) and when clamped up with the supplied basic torque wrench, it really does get a good hold of your car roof!

I got aero roof bars, which the catalogue says aren’t available for this car, but they fit a treat!

So the next time the sun ☀️ comes out... or at least it’s not raining like FOOOK I’ll get the old girl all packed up and go for a little ride out..!!

Will report back how I get on!!

Thanks for reading 🚴‍♂️

That looks epic!! You're right about the fitting kit, the pads are specially made for each roof so they mould directly to it. It seems the rear brackets fit in the same way as the Twingo between the glass, looks absolutely spot on.

And it can't be just me but there's something cool about a bike on top of a cool car 😃

Good effort Monsieur 😎

Not going to lie, i think bike racks on modern cars look crap. Give me an old bmx strapped to a rusty roof rack on a retro and its win. Just makes your car look too tall.

Chop chop then, let's see the Dope with a Raleigh Burner on top of it

Only got one key with the Clio when I bought it 🙁 so was always on my mind to get another one or two cut..

I had a quick eBay search the other day and stumbled across these fellas:

I did a quick google search and understood that I needed to programme them into the car using Renault Can-CLIP. Seeing as I have a copy I thought I’d give it a go!!

So after a couple of hours fuc*ing about I realised it’s not as easy as first thought, so I was back to square one..

Quick eBay search later and I found a chap local to me that can programme keys:

Contacted him and he was very helpful and could programme and cut my 2 new keys for £80 on my drive, without me having to travel anywhere..

£80 later I’ve now got 3 keys that are fully coded to the car and cut to work with the locks!!

Chuffed with that!! 👍👍😎

Took the Clio out again for a drive last Sunday to while away a few hours, and even came across a Mk1 Focus RS for a little play with at the end of my drive..

Absolutely love driving this car at the moment, but (as you can hear) the vibration from the PMS Shifter is getting on my T1ts...!

Went outside last night to see what I could do to make it better and remembered I did buy an official PMS weight that you attach to the gear linkage. Few minutes of groping around under the car saw it on, and I fitted it as close to the shift lever as possible.

Result...?

TOTALLY TRANSFORMED THE CAR!!! I’m chuffed to fook on what it’s done, the shifter now only vibrates a little when you’re giving it death in 1st, and I don’t mind that..

For anyone else with a PMS shifter, I’ve deduced that the rattle comes from the shift lever moving up & down in its bearing, at the base of the shift lever. The weight, stops it being able to lift up (it’s being weighted down) so doesn’t vibrate!!

I’m taking it to our very own @detailR this Saturday for him to work his magic on the paintwork, and apply a ceramic coating. Will report back.
