Clio Big Steve's RB Clio 182 Cup Restoration

Finally got round to taking the car out for a proper B-Road drive this evening and was mightily pleased with how it ran! Given it still needs mapping I’m not giving it any full throttle runs, but it nips along quite well with a ginger application of throttle.

The Bilstein Coil-overs are very compliant, and not crashy at all.

After reading up on suspension settings, I’ve just ordered a Pro-Am Racing Roll-Centre kit, as I don’t want the fact I’ve lowered the car, to detrimentally effect the Handling characteristics, and lead to premature driveshaft wear:

Looking forwards to turning up the wick to full-on soon!

My Pro-Am roll Centre kit arrived this morning, very impressed with the quality of the packaging which usually translates to it being a quality product when fitted:

Will probably end up bobbing it on this weekend.

you haven't lowered it that much though have you? i was under the impression it was needed more for track focused cars to decrease wishbone angle and return the roll center back to normal. Them pivot bearings wont like road salt and grit either, can you get boots for them?

When I got the tracking done at the weekend I noticed that the wishbones and driveshaft were both nearly horizontal and not dropping down as they usually do.

The beauty of this kit is that it gives you a spacer that you can install depending on the drop you’ve given the car.

No, boots are not available for this kit, but I’m not too bothered about Salt & Grit, you know me, these cars don’t get used as daily drivers throughout the winter.

In preparation for the COVID-Clio going to EFI-Parts next month to get mapped, I visited a local garage to have a chat with the lad down there to see if he could remove the restriction from the OE Catalyst:
35420E09-B2DA-4E0A-8EE6-90E60D73EC25.webp

After a few minutes chatting thru my options, he explained the advantages of proper sports Cat over the OE one, and given the effort I’ve gone to on the engine, I figured it would be foolish to p1ss about on the last parts of this build, so it can be the best it can be, come mapping time.

Therefore, today I dropped the car round to him and he changed this:

To this

I replaced the original Cat with a Magnaflow 200 cell sports cat, which I skimlinked off eBay thru TurboRenault.

Will report back the results of the mapping when it happens in late September.

Thanks for reading 🦃🚽🥓

Got hold of some second hand Fox Racing MS006 On eBay after a cheeky last minute snipe.

I think these wheels look great on an RB Clio 182:

Of course though, these wheels needed a bit of a refurb as they’d had a fair bit of kerb rash. Gave them all a tickle over this afternoon with a number of different grit paper and then finish off with a Polishing pad:

Chuffed how they came out 😎

Fitted the roll-Centre kit to my Clio today, a very comprehensive kit that fitted really well.

One of the common comments about these types of kits are the fact that the spherical bearings are exposed to the crappy English weather. It doesn’t bother me too much as this car will never be driven during the winter, but nevertheless I thought I would have a punt at providing some protection.

Quick eBay search later, and I got hold of four of these:

Which when fitted, provide a decent bit of coverage for the worst that’s thrown at it:

Now to get tracking done... again! 🙄

Thanks for reading 🙂

Yesterday was the day to see this project wrapped up, as I took the car to Chris/Scoff at EFI Tuning to be mapped so I can finally drive it properly rather than potter around at my own imposed 4K Limit,

Just to remind you all what’s been done to this engine during this build:
  • Cylinder honing
  • Clio 197 Pistons
  • Clio 197 Cams
  • Supertech Valves
  • Mild head porting
  • New main and big end bearings
  • Metal idler pulleys
  • New dephaser pulley
  • New timing belt kit
  • 3 angle valve seats
  • Block decked
  • Head skimmed “a fair whack, Increasing the compression ratio by 1 at least“ Quoting Bloke’s comments earlier in this thread
The drive up to Runcorn was Lovley, stopping off in Melton Mowbray to get some breakfast, and driving cross country to run the car through the gears as advised by Bloke:
D2771685-58F7-4A69-9C45-F0F518599ABF.webp

Arrived at EFI parts and first fitted the 197 Injectors to the engine, before Scoff spent a few minutes updating the Software on the car. Turns out that the ECU programme was the oldest 8001 version, rather than the latest 8003, so Chris updated that for me:

76A162A8-D72B-488E-8EDF-B3858A1E3E7E.webp

Next it was time for Chris to put it on the Rolllers and start to work his magic:
C04E97E6-510B-4604-B992-43B41D6FE590.webp
I was super impressed with the amount of effort and time Chris put into the work, and could see him tuning all parts of the map, not just doing the power run, but making sure the car will drive well, as well as perform as intended.

I took a little video of one of the power runs:

So enough of the text, it’s the graph you’re waiting for eh..? Well here it is:
E06477E4-F8E8-47A5-8423-AC295960B76C.webp
F0B8E184-CB61-4BDF-84E1-E1B2DF86AFB1.webp

188.1 bhp at 6400 with 167 lb/f at 5250 🙄

Little bit disappointed with that as was hoping to see the power at 190 something... but it appears that everything is not right with the engine....

Chris noticed a rattle during the mapping and saw it during the power runs also, there seems to be an issue with the BRAND NEW Dephaser Pulley as it’s rattling a little bit, and doesn’t seem to be “locking in” when the VVT tells it to?? You can see that the power really drops off after the peak. He saw during the mapping that sometimes it seems to work, and then other times not... 😤😬

SH1TBAGS!!

So it appears that whilst I’m removing the gearbox to fix the 5th Gear Synchro Issue the Engine has now also got to come out to get the Dephaser Pulley changed at the same time...

Typical bloody Renault, testing my patience! I’m going out for a good drive in it today to kick it’s head in a little bit and see how it feels, will share a few pictures as it should be a good day with some interesting machinery... 😉

Thanks for reading, I welcome your comments and feedback. 👍

Loved reading all the updates, like all the other projects.... Dedication, attention to detail, inspirational, no stone unturned throughout the process and informative. I imagine it has helped quite a few people along the way doing their own mini projects with part numbers, paint colours and how to's

I assume knowing you, you have the invoice for the dephaser pulley, can it be exchanged for another at Renault?

2 steps forward and 1 step back - think its part of French car character & ownership ;)

Looking really good and if you never had the work with mighty Chris done you would never have known so at least once sorted will be as good as it should and a finish to all the great work done :)

Enjoy

OKAY, OKAY.... ignore nearly everything I said in that last post.... THIS LITTLE CAR IS BLOODY AWESOME!!!!!

Had a drive out today with some MUCH More exclusive and expensive equipment and didn’t feel left out ONCE!

I now understand why the motoring press used to say these cars were giant killers back in the day, the car is like a little terrier always giving it’s best and coming back for more when you’re wringing it by the neck!

I had a very memorable drive behind this Ferrari California, and just keeping it filling up my windscreen as the Maranello V8 was making all the right noises will live with me until I die!!

The Bilstein suspension is just so compliant!! Firm enough to give you confidence, but soft enough to give you compliance over the Pot-holed UK Roads.

The little F4R felt STRONG as I stirred the gearbox with the PMS Shifter.

Just have a little listen to this (mine’s the silent one with @Millie_Bee driving) 😆:

Totally blown away by this little car, it will get whatever it needs to be at full strength..

Thanks for reading 💙

Engine has now also got to come out to get the Dephaser Pulley changed at the same time...
Engine doesn't have to come out for a dephaser, but you do have to fit a new belt every time it comes off (officially). You MUST (no exceptions) replace the crank pulley bolt too as its a stretch bolt, single use. Once tightened and removed it cannot be reused.

I have the locking kit if you need it.

Got to question if the new dephaser went on it given the happenings around that business recently. Worth checking that out. Ive never know a new one fail.
