Twingo Adey's Twingo GT (F4R+T 2.0ltr engine swap)

so many things it could be, you need to put a code reader on it, preferably renault clip. Anything blatantly fallen off in the engine bay?

Scrap yard haul today for a 41/31 5th gearset. Pulled from a modus that we didnt have the locking wheel nut key from so had to do everything from the top.

Got home and set about fitting it to the twingo. TBH it wont be a massive difference at all but should drop the rpm a little in the motorway cruising spot.

Downside, I'm not sure if the gearbox oil has ever been swapped out, it wasnt pretty and I'm not sure it will last long tbh. I noticed a bit of end float on one of the shafts too. Ahh well, see how she holds up.

5th is easy on most 5speed Renault boxs as its kind of external to the rest of the box. Lazy conversion from 4 to 5 speed back in the day I guess. They have kept the same architecture for donkeys now.
Also I had to do a 5th gear swap in Santa pod car park once on a gtt after writing it off on the way there so had a little idea it would work.

cheers adey, popped in to efi today and chris put a reader on and it was the actuator that had come unclipped, easy quick fix when you know what your looking for, top bloke.

winner winner, hope you also booked in for a remap at the same time too?

So I'm a little happier at the suspected gearbox condition. Rather than look at the oil I caught in a bucket after I removed the end cap I pulled some from the drain plug into a clean container. Looks loads better, I ran a magnet through it to see if it would find anything but picked up nothing. Filled it back up but I'll drop it again at the next service.

Yes, I remember that at Pod 🥰

Adey, what gearbox do the tce engines mate up to?

and is there anything that would make you choose a 0.9 over the 1.2 TCE if you were going to put one in something else.?

it's a JH series gearbox on the twingo, clio and wind.

I'm not actually sure if the .9 is a Renault engine or more Nissan engine, if I was swapping I would use the 1.2 due to its price. doesn't the .9 come from the twingo/smart car? I'm not that clued up on them.

I was under the impression it was a 0.9 you had in the teingo, but I’m assuming it’s the 1.2?
My thought was would you go to a 1.2 for more displacement if you were to engine swap something. But if it’s a 1.2 your running that answers that question really. Lol

I’m toying with the idea of a tce in my 5 instead of the C1j, it’s at the point of needing painted and then it gets built. So now would be the time to change.

Are the JH boxes output for the shafts the same as Renaults we know? 3 prong spider NS and spline OS?

Im pretty they are the same @Will D93 i will possibly be checking soon if an assortment of parts off a mates car come to fruition. It certainly looks to be the exact same style and setup. Gearbox is all the same architecture as you can see above with the external 5th gear.

So over the passed 2 days i tried this cleaning thing a little. Pressure washed down, cleaned washed cleaned and washed again, then polished the car, then used a glaze (poor boys black hole?) then a wax (nattys paste wax?). Even had the door trims off to clean up to them properly. Shits crap man, my arm feels like it want to fall off! And the car is now covered in dust from a very close by development going up.... grrrr. Doesn't look enough different to warrant the time or pain for doing it tbh. The metallic pops now i guess but i cant really capture it on camera.

oh and top it off I started the car up today, ran on 3 ffs. quick obd read and it had an injector 1 fault listed. Found the 172 injector to be cracked at the plug. Luckily I swiped some good condition spares off cliosport a while back. Quick switch out saw her purring again.

So ive been on a parts hunting trip to a mates who was stripping a clio 172, got away with everything i thought i would need to make the twingo wider tracked than the standard setup. All looked good enough for me to get under the car and crack on with the job.............

Cracked off the hub nut and got the car up in the air to start taking a look. Initially the driveshaft setup looked different but carried on having a nose around. Started measuring up a few parts to realise they are already the same as a 172..................... The wishbones definitely measure up the same the only difference being what looks to be the arb mounting point/style. A quick eyeball on the arb sizes shows them to be the same size or very very close. Powerflex list the twingo to either 23 or 24mm (some pov specs have a 20mm) and the clio 172 at 25mm and 28mm. I have the 25mm 172 arb, im not sure if its worth swapping out just the wishbones and arb? Could just fit some fresh powerflex bushes to the existing setup? would i notice a 1mm difference in front arb thickness?

So currently ive added a low of parts to my stash that i have no use for... urgh.

Said mate also has a spare rear beam with disk brakes. Ill measure up the rear arb and see if its worth swapping that out or not. The gt and 172 both come up as having a 1386mm rear track width but it could defo do with having a stiffer rear end.
