5 GT Turbo Abandoned in 2003, going for a big save/restoration

Seeing as I have waved goodbye to the phase 1,i thought i better start finishing the to do list.

I saw gt turbo parts are reproducing the steering wheels and seeing as that's one of the small few parts I didn't have new, I thought I'd cop one just incase they only produce them in small numbers

And fair play to them, they look awesome quality. Will look great with my new genuine centre finisher

I also never had the sound deadening fitted under the bonnet, so pulled my finger out and got one.

Finished off with the gearbox service sticker.

And my oil dipstick was well worn and not dealing correctly, so a new genuine one of those is now in place

I then gave the car a once over, topped up the engine and gearbox oil. While doing so, I noticed the intercooler air guide had dislodged and blocking half the intercooler. So, an hour later and 2 stone lost as I was doing this in 30c heat, the grill out, indicators, cold air feed etc etc etc. Now all back in place correctly.

I still need to fit the steering wheel, as well as new front seat covers which I've been putting off for over a year now. Luckily the original covers are near on perfect. Other than that, I really need to get out in it. Zero shows this year and under 30 miles!

Again, if anyone sees a good phase 1 for sale, please let me know!

FARK
spot the problem....
Usual "I'll sort out a small annoying problem". Turns into having to now replace a section of the a post!

Anyone got a spare shell to cut a section out. I sold my spare gtt shell... Wait for it.... 24 hours ago 👍🏻 🤦🏻‍♂️DSC_1984.webp

Fixed the door check strap retainer. I had to weld a new bloody section in and paint the pillar!

Haven't touched the car since August and the door and interior was still stripped from the work I did. So I set about refitting it back together yesterday while we had a dry Saturday.

Still a list of things I'd like to get done to tick off the annoying "perfection" list. Like retrim the front seats (I have everything here to do them).

I fancy a different wheel set up as well, but can't decide what I want. I fancy a set of azev A, and sold some last year stupidly.

Hopefully get a few more little jobs done as I go into the new year and get the car out and about.

Merry Christmas and happy new year all 👍🏻

Bloody high winds ripped my garage roof off!

Me and my boy quickly covered it in a tarp and screwed it on

Couple of grand later, a new roof, guttering and facias for the 5s home.

Thank god for the carcoon, because the garage filled with rain water as it poured down for days.
Last weekend I got the car out, swept all the water away and noticed some even got into the carcoon. Dried everything out for a day and cars tucked away again.

I need to get it ready for use and a mot this summer. Might do a oil change, probably best I did as its not had one since the top end rebuild.

Still need to do a few jobs to it. But, more new parts haul...Screenshot_20240410-130522.webpScreenshot_20240410-130530.webp
Yep, full set of brand new front inner and outer metal window seals. I have the drivers side already, but never used them.
Going to be nice having mint outer seals, even though mine are pretty damn good anyway.

Be VERY CAUTIOUS AND SLOW when you fit those door seals, you can bend and F**k them up SUPER easily…

done it many times on other 5's i've restored

i find it's removing them thats the problem. I think if someone reproduced these, they'd sell well
Same profile as the 21, been looking for many years but the min order quantity for new manufacture is prohibitive. I've found something thats close, just need to test it on a working window at some point.

that will half the value of all the trims i just purchased and fill me with regret🤣

i have a fair few spares in good condition if you ever need one to copy and properly measure?

I've got a load of old 21 ones thanks matey no issues with samples, just the replacement stuff!

Got the car out the carcoon today and did a few jobs to it.

Jobs done. So I thought I'd go for a drive in the sun.... I wish I never!

Speedo has stopped working, horn stopped working, headlamp flash not working!

Speedo has always been a dodgy connection behind the clocks. I usually have to have the connector or wires in a certain angle and the plug pushed 3/4's of the way on the clock connector. Well, after 2 hours of faffing on a industrial estate, driving up and down, wiggling the wires, holding wires, disconnecting, re connecting, playing with the connection near the air box.... NOTHING. So seriously pissed off and no idea how to trace a fault, as everything has always just... Worked. Other than the connector behind the clocks needing adjustment every so often to have it working perfectly. Any ideas on how to poke a probe or how to tell what the issue is?

Horn. I think I might need a new compressor, which I spent days looking for a new one with no luck. I'm sure there is a way of refreshing the compressor?

Headlight flash. Well, I'll see if I have a new stalk here somewhere, but given up for the day.

Mot is looming and these bits have really annoyed me as I just don't have the time to be messing around with the car anymore.

Was looking forward to using it this summer. It was perfect before I put it away for winter!

Any help on using a multimeter etc and trying to find the speedo issue culprit appreciated 👍🏻

Try a different set of clocks in if you have a set to test. They are always the same, speedo stops working for no reason when laid up.

I believe the circuit board on the speedo head can have issues @Nick Kettle might be able to advise.

Yea on the rear Speedo connector it turns 90 deg on the pcb. The tracks crack at that point. ( hair line crack ) and then you get a Speedo that mugs you off constantly. To check the actual pick up on the gearbox you need to use a multimeter on ohms. Not sure which wires are what but you should get a reading on 2 wires of like 1000 ohms which is the coil in the Speedo sensor. That’s 3 wire connector near the air box doesn’t really give much trouble. It’s usually the connector on the Speedo itself or cracked tracks.

i have a brand new genuine circuit board on the clocks, so hopefully rule that out. New upper and low cable too

thanks guy's, i'll check it over this evening. The car has to be perfect, or i loose sleep lol.
I have limited experience with a multimeter. I can literally just test a circuit and that's about it. So, any hints are welcomed to what wires and what settings to use to test.

I have two other speedo's i can pop in and try also. Which will be interesting.

If all else fails. I have a brand new speedo with zero miles i can try
