5 GT Turbo Renault 5 gt turbo radiator options

Guys, what’s the deal with the OE rad!!? I’ve been googling and I’m now assuming rocking horse poop. 🤦🏼‍♂️

My rebuild is more budget than concours, but I’d prefer to keep it as original as possible. There are plenty of alloy ones available so if I have to have to go down that route then it won’t be the end of the world, but I’d rather not. Maybe paint an alloy one? Might look shite. Get someone to refurb mine? I don’t know 🤷🏼‍♂️

Gt turbo spares have OE in stock but it says ask for price. I’m of the ilk that if you have to ask the price, you probably can’t afford it! 😆

What are the options?

Cheers.

If side tanks are good, worth giving Mansfield Radiators a ring, they've recored some obscure stuff for me in the past, obviously some were copper, but had Alpine V6 ( Ally with plastic tanks) recored as it shared the core with others, just side tanks differed.

Long, long time since I used them, he was in a unit in Mansfield, but I heard he'd shut it and was working from home, so I can't guarantee it's under same ownership, a recore on a copper was about £120-150, but that was 10/15 years ago, but he was good, made a petrol tank for a mate .

I was looking for one for my 9 turbo (same engine) and there are plain rad options available but there was nothing much with the integrated oil heat exchanger. I decided to remove that anyway, so if you do that it gives you more options. I have a new aftermarket rad in the garage unused that might be of use to you (non-oil-cooler type)

In the end, after some arsing about and then going EFI, I used a Clio 197 rad and fan setup which just fits in the front and the fan is a million times better than the shonky old thing it came with. Only problem with that now is the fan draws so much juice when it comes on it makes the engine stall sometimes! FFS.

Thanks @DaveL485

By removing the oil cooler/heat exchanger, do you mean you just ran without it? Or did you have an external setup?
If I decide to go this route, I’ll bear in mind that you have one available, thanks.

Useful to know about the 197 setup. 👍🏻 Shame it has its downside of drawing too much power. Same old story though isn’t it, you solve one problem and create another. Probably still worth it though.

Thanks again.

Just removed it, removed the adapter plate and screwed the filter direct to the block. Simpler, easier, less parts to fail, less mess in the engine bay. Oil temps for my car of relatively low performance (maybe 140bhp) wont be a concern, especially on a modern synthetic oil.

That’s ace, thanks. That’ll be a hell of a lot cheaper I’m sure. I’ll be a while with the rest of it yet so I’ve got time to think 👍🏻

Map needs adjusting to suit if its still on that base i sent you or alternator is shagged. Set idle around 1000rpm. Mine runs 2x fuel pumps and loads of other electrical shite with a massive diesel fan and no conking out. You can hear ecu pick idle up, advancing timing with voltage drop

Regarding rad, the alloy ones arent great but work ok, it will get you away. Is yours leaking?
Yeah, it’s leaking. Not sure where from though. I’ll take it out at some point soon, see how bad it is, then decide which route to take.
Good to know the alloy ones will do, if necessary. Gives me multiple options
Cheers 👍🏻

Its still on the base map mate, the alternator is a brand new OE one, it prob just needs a tweak like you say. As soon as the fan comes on the afr drops and it stalls!

Leigh you'll need to change the screw adapter thing in the block from the sandwich plate one to the non-sandwich plate one thats all. Straight swap.
