Cheers guys, yep sure there are a few suprises left still :)

Atm I am not thinking too much beyond get fully stripped and tidy up ;) I can then give the car a good clean expose the worry points and plan the attack. Will definetly be taking a steer on best course of action.
 
Be careful @Duncan Grier!!! If you start ripping everything out and look at all the grotty bits in one fell swoop you run the risk of ending up with a big pile of sh1te and then a rusty shell.. Which is EXACTLY the point the apathy arrives and towels get thrown in!!!

I reckon you could make steady progress by breaking the car into smaller bite size chunks, and then work around the car. For example, work through the engine bay and front arches first, before you go & look at all the sills & inside etc...?

Rust is a funny thing, it soon takes hold of the smallest point and looks horiffic very quickly, but a quick tickle with the grinder and wire wheel and you'll soon see where you need to focus! ;)
 
Fair advice there @Big Steve - Raider but in a strange sadistic @Turbell way, kind of ok with the problems found (much rather not be changing windscreen surround mind)

It would certainly help fixing as I go rather than seeing it all in one go but knowing myself will change focus and feel head down, grinder in hand, welder between legs the way forward

1. Strip car fully
2. Mod rotessierie & mount car
3. Clean, wire wheel
4. Drink beer and plan attack
5. Just keep going until fixed and have new found jedi welding skills
 
Pros and cons both ways, I tend to focus on worst area first solely, and with minimal of stripping, but I'm pushed for space so if another car needs work I can't lock out garage for months and months/years.
But I think @Duncan Grier has a plan and the required skills/contacts/patience/experience to see it through.
Just crack on with that screen repair whilst it's topside......I'm intrigued what lies underneath.
Scab at bottom of Camprust front screen/seal join I've just poked through, so that'll be having a metal bond repair with screen in situ, as rest is perfect, but dremel clone has died so it's on hold.

If I’d have gone one area at a time I’d probably still have the blue one, there are other reasons it went but seeing all the work in one go really didn’t help.

This time I’m gonna work front to back and not go looking for problems before they’re an issue.

She’s a bit crusty @Duncan Grier but they all are once they’ve stopped being loved but they’re all fixable.

On the bright side you’re now ahead of my project and I’ve had it 4 years 😂
 
As For your screen Apperture, you don't need a low amp mig to weld bits in, just tack the repairs, let it cool and tack some more, until fully welded in. leaving inch gaps to start with, depending on the size of the repair. Until you've welded it in fully. Keep as close to the corner lines/seams as possible to reduce distortion.

Tig welding is OK if you can only get to both sides of the repair as it is an even heat source and use as little rod as possible. So you can panel beat it back into shape afterwards which I don't think you'll be able to do on the screen pillars.

I just saw somewhere you were possibly going to try and Tig weld it.

Alas been through a real rough time the last few months losing my sister, one of my closest best friends along with my nan and step grandad having a very bad time with cancer atm :(

Mix in house renovation after the big move, juggling the madness of 3 boys & work.......has left very little car time or enthusiasm tbh

But enough of the life challenges and woeful excuses of doing bugger all on the 5......just not acceptable :grin.gif:

I have booked accomadation for ND and almost certainly a decent welder on Santa list coming ;)

I will be starting to get some time and share progress, plenty of great threads on the go atm making me feel left out lol
 
Ok well as @Nick Kettle made reference to it in another thread I felt guilty of lack of any update on here

Limited progress due to focus on work and house restoration/extension amd of course family life :)

I have reworked the original rottiserie to fit and work for the 5 and beefed it up. Rotates and moves around all good ;)

Found more rust and jobs but thought I would dump a load of pics for bored new year viewing ;)
