I find having a gap gives more penetration with less heat so even though I use more power. Gives less distortion. Tig welding is different, Need the heat so no gap is good.

The clamps hold the position well too. The other issue is they gap tend to tighten as you tack it up so no gap can sometimes end up in an overlap at the other end. Can sometimes stretch a tack with a hammer and dolly.
Straight from the horse's mouth, so gap it is.

Nothing exciting few hours in garage welding the inside where I was not fully happy....sure it was fine. Grinding down, welding remaining tiny holes as I am clearly obsessed

Note to self DO NOT primer until happy with welding lol. Pita even after wire wheel of doom

Against all common sense and logic going for flap disc on all welds even ones you will not see 😒

Bit more welding and grinding to do on 1st bit still but then can move on 😉

Not as much timed as planned today but still moving forward. Looking to get more time tomorrow as I ended up doing garden diy and mega clear up most of the day so definetly in the good books 😀

After making a suitable bit of metal to weld a bit where the leading edge had gone but floor fine.....change of plan and stitch/seam weld the lot. Some continued solid advice and feedback from @Mark_L @Chris74# @DaveL485 👍

Well few more hrs dontated to the cause

Happy rottiserie starting to come in really useful, and work done so far to new inner

However in process of getting rear jacking point off and drilling out remaining section of inner sill found extra jobs 😞 also with car rotated can see the mammoth battle with the rust ahead

Wire wheel and old underseal removal is orrible. Think next time in might have a few hrs attacking underseal removal to get our the way

That’s the problem of hitting it in one go, you get to see the long road ahead. You’ll get there, one piece at a time and soon there will be nothing left to do. There’s a saying about eating an elephant, one bite at a time. An hour or two when you can will get the job done 👍

As a few will remember I had the pleasure of owning this car back in 2005 and sold during the incarnation of the vag powered black 5......

.....11 years on Chris gave me the opportunity to buy back and talked myself into its just a bit of welding and lock of paint, bit of tlc and get using it

How I left it :)

Congrats, that looks absolutely awesome!!

Double skins of death.....
At least there's tubes in where the bolts pass that always survive, so rear beam alignment isn't an issue. Imagine the shit storm if you didn't have anything to build from? Bit of plating and it's golden, drown it in cavity wax it'll never cause an issue again, job jobbed.
It'll end up a beautifully sorted shell, no doubts, no worries.
Chuffed for you.

Between work, diy, decorating and general family life not had any time as of late.....

So as if farthers day seemed a good time to kick start bk on the 5 for a few hrs 😀

Happy enough other than 1 hole in the new panel somehow marked wrong doh, elongated hole but looks crap so will weld it up and drill a new hole

Plenty of hydro80 and after few final checks will get welded on Tue evening all going well
