So few more hours in garage to wind down after a full on day at work...
Got stuck straight in measuring everything up and noticed in my rushed quick measure up in last update I had not flipped the measurments from top NSF wishbone.....
Sooo load more measuring result is give or take bottom wishbone all good and pickups as per pics, need now get tabs made and welded in final position
Top measured too many times and fits into front chassis rail ok and can notch one side, and plate the other to keep solid. Happy days
So while it may not look it some solid progress (in my head anyway).....had a few sessions in the garage as the postioning of front pickups critical imo
All scribed up and happy I am within +/- 1mm in wheelbase and track width spot on
Last fun was getting the height of wishbone pickups right in ratio to the chassis and match rear......
Cut up some 4mm 40mm box down to size, welded up to smaller size with a view to shape the 3mm sheet but sacked off as a fail.....all part of the learning experiance.....will revert to welding
Not much time on it over Bank Holiday weekend fun....
Decided today to get some time on lathe and drill/tap some solid tube which once drilled hole in subframe will insert/get true and weld in. Bit more than needed but better than too weak
Couple hrs just as full on focused on some house DIY and jobs with spare time lately.....but as it was way too hot this afternoon seemed a good time to get shade
My 2 M10x1.5 tap were not great and could not find my good one so sacked off prior start and went to picked up a set (taper, plug and bottoming taps) and did right - accepted tools are getting so expensive from what they were but a joy to use.
As I love measuring sooooo much....did some more lol, decided to lower the wishbone pickup points 15mm got marked up after checked and triple checked
Started to work the subframe off car but time up....
So it does not look much but seems to have stolen 3hrs total time off me
Oem wishbone pickups put a fair fight up to drill out and remove but figured as not needed and adds not real strength would save a bit of weight also, then cut off the excess on the sides to the eagle eyed renault lover's out there along with flattening. Will stich weld it once bolted back on the car and un pick one or 2 sections I'm not 100% happy with.
With no garage time as of late, fathers day option this afternoon was some pub/grub action or a decent 3hr run on the 5......so of course picked garage and now having cold beers delivered on demand at home as the kids are looking after me
Sure it might cost me in Roblox or Fortnite later
Anyway, the break from the car has done some good and with fresh motivation following some quality time in a great Clio Raider reminded me my deep love for renaults and even more so making crazy one's
So decided not quite happy with current front wishbone heights and with projected F/R height rake a touch worried about bump steer and so.......more measuring and thinking, drawing and measuring lol
While a bit of a pain (ok a lot) lowering the pickup points means the fronts on will need the subframe cutting out and box etc but it helps me sleep at night, other would say just im sad
I never got pics of setup measuring but much of muchness.
Decided to get on the CAD, cut some sheet, bend and weld to add strength but also allow mounting pickup lower - will box in once right.
Ability to not get in and clean/prep the old subframe metal to weld really shows itself and ended up going a bit hotter to burn through and penetrate right and got some nice splatter in places. Not the nicest looking but all good and will go back at some point to tart up or replace.
Lots of words, not loads of actual changes but usual spam pics to share the journey.
Managed to get some evenings back in the garage this week and a rare treat of decent run today as off work...
Made some minor changes to setup and decided to mount wishbone pickups 5mm higher all round....this will allow me to run lowered without compromising angle of wishbones and also have option to go nice and low if wanting track attack mode with no impact....all part of a build like this and better to chamge et this stage lol
Happy with the front and just need to keep on it to fabricate box section etc, also need to cut/box a recess to give access to mounting bolts
Got some wheels to pickup and also got steering rack turning up next week
On a seperate note having some fun with the DQ500 converting to 2wd....have considered selling out and get the DQ381 box which comes in 2wd but factory rated to 400-420nm where as the DQ500 is 600nm
Some options so not given up yet why I do I never take the easy option
Only need to convert this to a shaft....I mean lol
