5 GT Turbo The second coming…. The F4Rt saga

Yes Mr Bond thats pretty much the shape of it 😂

As I’m sure you are aware it’s not just any 5 though, it’s my complete old set up in which I never got to finish, had it not been that particular engine swapped 5 I wouldn’t of bothered but I have for last few weeks been on the look out for a fast FWD turbo charged hatchback and was seriously close to buying a K20 EG Civic for £12k.

So as this was cheaper and fitted perfectly into the powerful FWD hatchback category it made a lot of sense. Even more so when I know the 5 so well I can do the majority myself without having to learn another platform like an old Honda. All in all I felt like it was meant to be.

Is it an awesome shell? Not really. It’s a genuine 5 shell though, my last one wasn’t. Do I need a swanky looking perfectly painted car ? No, I have the FD for that.

So basically this will be a road legal, slightly crusty, slightly tatty 400hp+ straight line road weapon and when I feel like being swanky and all JDM I’ll take the FD out. (If it ever runs that’s is 😝)

At least i'm not alone in wasting vast sums of cash on old heaps. It's a small consolation :)

My 9 would look the absolute dogs on those wheels. I think it needs to happen.

I’ll get some pictures and send them over later mate, I think I noticed a bit of scratch around one of them, let me double check.

So I’ve got Covid meaning it’s slowed my plans down a little bit this week, I was planning on having my mate over to do some wiring for me but that will have to wait.

One of the jacking points needs some work but I think it’s salvageable with a little bit of pulling and straightening up.

Here’s the good one;

Here’s the bad one; (the photo makes it look worse than it is)

SSi4 and fuel/oil sensors turned up. I also kept the t-piece to remote mount the oil pressure sensor as they do not like engine vibration.

I managed to get a used AEM oil temp gauge for a decent price, it’s the newer generation too and pretty cool.

I’ve also picked up a used Stack boost gauge too which is on its way in the post.

The previous owner also tracked down the additional oil line needed to remotely fit the oil pressure sensor as well as the required fittings/t-pieces to do so.

I was offered back the Race Technology dash too but I don’t think its really worth the time and hassle this time round. I felt it was too dim and for the price doesn’t really compare to the newer coloured screen dashes available. Also trying to keep the cost down somewhat as I’m going to have an engine to pay for soon for the RX7.

So seats and a cage next, I am hopeful of getting my old cage back.

My last day of isolation today, woo hoo.

Had my friend over today to sort a few electrical jobs.

He’s fixed the indicators, wired in the oil/fuel pressure sensors, wired in the innovate box, wired in boost and oil temp gauge and sorted a few odd jobs to tidy a things up.

Unfortunately after all of this we discovered the “serial in” port on the 420d is broken so no joy getting oil and fuel pressure showing in the ecu software.

As it’s an old 420d I don’t think I’m going to have much luck with finding another one to buy nor am I going to find a new board so my friend Mark is going to see if he can repair the “serial port” on his bench. If not I might be forced into an ecu change.

I’ve emailed Chris at EFI Parts to see if he can help and emailed Adaptronic direct. I’m wondering if the newer Modular 1200 is a straight swap, anyone know ? Be great if it’s a plug and play swap not so good that it will cost me £700.

Yeah the looms are the same connectors IIRC, you can swap it out. Pretty sure it says that on the Adaptronic site, Chris will confirm. You have to use EUGENE with the M series though not WARI.

420D should be repairable though last time I asked Adaptronic would still look at them - unless that changed with the Haltech takeover.

I’ve just watched a video of Andy at Adaptronic before the acquisition and he says the only thing you need to change is the pins for the injectors and ignition but other than it is an easy upgrade.

Fair enough if it comes from the man himself it must be right! If you upgrade let me know I know someone that needs spares for a 420D I might have the old unit off you :)

Brigsy has first dibs mate but yeah if he doesn’t want it.

Adaptronic have come back and confirmed that the M1200 does indeed share the same plugs as the 420d, I potentially just need to change some pins around which shouldn't be too much of a drag. I downloaded Eugene and opened my map and it all seemed to move over correctly so I am hoping I won't have any issues regarding making any significant changes to the file, it's only a base map really so as long as it get's me to the dyno then I am good.

My friend thinks he has a shot of fixing the 420d so will wait and see if he has any success if not then I guess I'll move over to the M1200.

Praise the lord and also my friend Mark for fixing my serial ports on ECU, that’s a £20 fix instead of a new ECU.

See fuel pressure reading albeit it a tad high, at least I have a reference now and some safety measures in place. Just need to fit remote mounted oil pressure sensor and will have that reading too.
