Unsure whether to have a go at plating stuff at home myself, or just take it to somewhere.... what does the plating treatment cost in that posh gold zinc stuff?

I bought ebay one, can't remember which one, gave it to my Dad to play about with, which he hasn't yet.........must of had it 2 years.........his to do list is very long and he's clocking 80.....cost about 50 squid with everything needed.
If you've got time buy a book, research on interweb......but ebay kit came with lots of shite like gloves and goggles you'd already have. Shit rheostat, etc, but no power source.
Basically everything has to clean....clean...clean, better the starting finish, better the result
Basic maths working out amperage and time in plating bath.....so many microns per blah blah.....my tiny brain can only hold so much.....
Best option would be find a plater, take everything clean, do it in a job lot.
I might set it up one day, but time.....time...time..

It's not that dear, more you have done the better the value! The only trouble is it doesn't last! Once it's got wet a few times it's back to how it was! Don't really have an alternative either.

Not so bad in the engine bay!

Blast cabinets are great! Boring but the finish is spot on.

Same with powder coating, make sure it's primed, otherwise one chip ends up holding the moisture underneath!

Saturday, under the advisement of @Mark_L I cleaned up the new roof skin, removing the seam sealer, roof lining glue and any surface rust that had started up. I used a wire wheel on a grinder, then went over with a normal sander. After that I sanded it off a bit with a sander and masked off the bits that need to be welded to the car, then sprayed it with Bonda anti-rust primer

Once I had yet another tidy around in the garage I had a mess with the easier spot welds on the roof of the car, on the leading edge where the top of the windscreen sits. I drilled out some of the spot welds with a 6mm spot weld drill, but it didnt seem to release the full weld, so on the other side I used a coarse flap disc and ground them down which seemed to work a little better.

I had to finish off a bit early cos it was her birthday, so this is how I left it Saturday.

Sunday the plan was to release the spot welds at the back, I went and got a bigger, posher spot weld drill (8mm) and figured out how to use it and...well....got a little carried away.

That was the rear done, so I marked up the sides

Dimpled the centre with a punch so the drill locates and cracked on

The roof is brazed in the 4 corners so that took a bit of careful grinder action

x20190901_162006_RS.webp

Around the inside of the roof frame the skin is stuck on with seam sealer, it's bloody tough stuff!

x20190901_162016_RS.webp

I used a combination of a stanley knife and old wallpaper scraper to start releasing the seam sealer, trying to be careful not to bend or damage anything. It must have taken me a good couple of hours to get around it all.

Great work @DaveL485 for a Lankey Flea Bag!! Hope it will all go back together with the same effort!

Aren't sunroof's a royal PITA, it was one of the things that drew me to my R11T, the lack of a sunroof!

Good work mate . Does not look to bad to weld back on either plenty of metal if you plug weld it back on and you can get at the welds to flat them down . If you need a hand placing it back on I not to far away. Did one on a 21 savanna , took 6 of us to land it on it was 18 months old some one used it as the path on the way home from the pub

i think you should send the skin for a mold and get a carbon copy made.......

You know it's funny you should say that, literally right before I logged on here just now I was on the phone to someone that offered to make the mould....

@Mark_L has kindly offered to assist in refitting, but if you want to join in my garage is big enough for everyone haha! I'm going to weld up where I have over-drilled the spots a bit, clean it all up smooth, get some weld through primer on the go and then Mark is bringing his spot welder to reattach it (unless the carbon skin idea takes root anyway LOL, we will see on that.

Also, he planted the seed in my head of having the cage done while the roof is off. Lots easier apparently. So now I am assessing options and sequencing of: Roof Skin/Carbon Skin refit / Roll cage / Blasting & Bodywork repair.

I wish i was considerably richer than I am, it would solve so many issues!

Don't think you can complain about your pennies when you're talking carbon roof skins!😛

Stick with the steel and save a some pennies for the cage! 😁
