21 Turbo The Scrapyard Quadra

After weighing up options, I decided to go for a rental cylinder.

There is a BOC place half a mile from my house that will do me a "Y" cyliners (4.84 M³ ) for the equiv of £4 a month rental and £37-ish per refill, against the rent free stuff which is coming in at £130 initial outlay and £65 a refill for a similar-ish cylinder. Based on using 4 cylinders a year for the next year which I think is conservative given the 2 rotboxes I have...

BOC Rental = (4 x 12) + (37 x 4) = £196
Hobbyweld rent free = 130 + (65 x 3) = £325

No brainer! Maybe when everything is a little less sieve like and i'm on the far side of the body resto, I will switch to the rent free.

If it gives you any idea of what you'll use, I started off with a nearly full 9 litre hobbyweld cylinder , how near full I can't remember, I've emptied that and refilled.
I have marked the gauge on this new cylinder and I'm half way down it, only front bumper bracket areas to do now, perhaps a few bits more.
Initial cost was about a ton deposit , then 35ish for the fill, rough calculation is I'll have used at least one and half, perhaps two if it expires more quickly .

I didn't go for rental because I can't see a time when I won't have it, but I'm unlikely to chomp as much gas as I have done over the past six months.
And if I chuck the towel in on rot fettling I can get my deposit back, less a tenner plus vat handling fee.

But convenience should be high on the list, and If the BOC place ticks that box, then it sounds good to me.

Got busy with the welder on the subframe so it can go back for powder coating. It was harder than expected, as despite being blasted clean there was still gunk and sealer and oil and shite sandwiched between the layers of metal where I was trying to weld, it's not as neat as I wanted but is functional and I havent had to grind it back on the most part. Once its powder coated it should look fine....and if it doesnt who gives a crap it's hidden at the bottom of the car anyway lol

I did the wishbone brackets and then odd intervals around the main seam where there wasn't any seam sealer. I think it should suffice for now. This is all I got done on the 21 this weekend as I wanna get the axle back on the 9 asap and as well as the axle itself is coming on I found some more yukky bits underneath (update on that thread in a few mins).

I didnt have so much time spare this weekend but aware of the lack of progress on the 21 I spent a couple of hours finishing stripping the other 2 doors down to bare metal. Every single little plug, bung, screw insert and clip removed and bagged up. I guess most of it won't go back in the end but best keep hold for now. I also took the passenger seat out, removed the Adaptronic bracket and battery tray in the back, and found some more rust hiding under the passenger door seal.

It's not far off being a completely bare shell now, pretty much only the dash and dash loom, heater box and windscreen left to come out. I'm still hunting for some sill panels, and in fact I know of three different sets out there (2 genuine, one repro) but none of the owners of them will sell - and I mean I have offered a LOT of money for them (£600 for the genuine ones!).

There MUST be a set out there for me somewhere. I refuse to believe there isn't some, gathering dust somewhere, waiting for me to arrive with a fistful of cash and a stupid grin.

Why all the fuss to get genuine unless you plan to the full things replacing at the spot welds? It's likely to be chopped in, fillered coated and a skirt over the top? Spend the money in other areas.

I would replace the whole genuine panel if I could find some. If not the repro panel would be easier to trim and fit than fabrication. It's not an aesthetic thing really I just want the car to be the best it can be.

Probably be you doing it anyway mate, as soon as you have the room it's being dumped in your unit (assuming you want the work anyway!) i'm just trying to make a bit of progress while i'm waiting to reduce the time and cost.

Structurally sound and protected from future rust is the main thing.
Haha, I'll have space as soon as the panels are painted on MHR, I'm in my double garage at home currently. No probs on the roof skin either.
Give me two weeks notice and I'll deliver a bare shell and some cash :-)

I'm getting closer on window seals but can't quite seem to get something spot on. I could probably live with the non-smooth edging on the outside, the trims grip the door absolutely fine but the inside edges extend too far into the door aperture. I might try one with some glass just to see what happens.

Having had a break from the 21 while i've been pratting around with the 9 I decided to do a bit on the 21 Saturday afternoon, so I gave this a bash

Its the drivers side front bumper mount for those of you that dont recognise it, Attacked it with the plasma cutter and then fitted a couple of bits in the hole. I bought a metal shaping kit from the kitcar show I went to the other week, some proper hammers and big chunky metal buck things to shape over...its helped a lot. Also sacked off the welder manual and guidelines and started from scratch on the setup which has yielded some significant improvement!

Once that was seam welded in I made the reinforcing plate from 2mm steel

It's nice to have picked up the welder, had a go at the 21 and not come away in a strop! :)
