Silverstone Classic 2020 (CANCELLED) - 20th Anniversary of the Clio V6

Much as I try to understand it, I still don't understand the business model behind having closed races..... :(

Not an official update, but may be considered reliable, so here we go!

Silverstone willing to run multiple closed-door F1 races in 2020

"Silverstone boss Stuart Pringle says the British Grand Prix venue is "absolutely" willing to host multiple races without fans if it helped Formula 1 hold its coronavirus-delayed 2020 season.

F1 owner Liberty Media has made it clear that the current schedule will be superseded by an all-new version, with dates of races that have not yet been postponed moving, and some circuits potentially holding more than one race on consecutive weekends.

Discussions between F1 and race promoters are ongoing, with more details expected to emerge in the next two weeks, but closed-doors events would mean revised commercial arrangements for promoters because a track's income is derived from ticket sales
."

How many races they will run behind closed doors is anyone's guess right now, but it would be interesting to see what the revenue streams are for those that are reliant on ticket sales.

Next, we will have to see how this impacts Silverstone Classic 2020, which clearly will not follow this model.

UPDATE from the organises

"In light of the current situation, we have extended our Early Bird period so that it now applies until midnight on the 10th of May.

Car Club members still have until the end of May to book their display package, but from the 11th May, our Standard rather than Early Bird prices will apply."

I think they are abit foolish taking peoples money at the moment. Can’t see the event happening to be honest.

Thanks for the update, Kett.

Here is a further update curtsey of Autosport (excerpt below): LINK

"Plans are in the works for the Austrian Grand Prix to take place on 5 July behind closed doors, with a trimmed-down number of paddock personnel to help comply with the restrictions in place.

In an update issued by F1 on Monday morning, Carey confirmed the plan was to hold races across Europe, Asia and the Americas before finishing in the Middle East.

The European rounds would take place in July, August and September - initially behind closed doors - before the events in Asia and the Americas.

Bahrain and Abu Dhabi would then form the final races of the season, taking place in December.

"Although this morning it was announced that the French Grand Prix, due to take place in late June, will not be going ahead, we are now increasingly confident with the progress of our plans to begin our season this summer," Carey wrote.

"We're targeting a start to racing in Europe through July, August and beginning of September, with the first race taking place in Austria on 3-5 July weekend."

"September, October and November, would see us race in Eurasia, Asia and the Americas, finishing the season in the Gulf in December with Bahrain before the traditional finale in Abu Dhabi, having completed between 15-18 races.

"We will publish our finalised calendar as soon as we possibly can
." - Formula 1 CEO Chase Carey

From the statements made above we can deduce that the British Grand Prix will not be the first event and, if it does go ahead, will be held behind closed doors. This means Silverstone Classic 2020 will need to be postponed or cancelled, but if it does go ahead, it will not be held until autumn or winter 2020 at the earliest!

I will clarify the situation ASAP.....

UPDATE from the organisers.

The attached update, which details how the organisers are intending on dealing with COVID-19 situation and the impact it will have on this year's event, will be emailed to all those who have purchased tickets.

"We will make a decision on this year’s Silverstone Classic by the end of May and will be back in touch then with details of all the options available to you."

Excerpt from the email I received is pasted in below:
"Although this week we are seeing an easing of restrictions due to COVID-19 on our lives in England, although not in the rest of the UK, the future, of course, is still uncertain. However, we remain hopeful that this year’s Silverstone Classic can go ahead in some form and with all necessary safety precautions."

If you have any questions please PM me.

According to AutoSport, it seems that the British Grand Prix may not be a goer after all due to the quarantine laws that are to be put in place from June 2020.

"Silverstone's hopes of getting the final green light for the British Grand Prix have suffered a blow, sources have indicated to Autosport, amid growing indications that the UK government will not exempt sports - including Formula 1 - from planned quarantine restrictions.

A 14-day quarantine for overseas visitors to Britain was announced recently and is expected to be imposed from the start of next month. The plan will be confirmed to parliament, with details of the small list of exemptions still being finalised.
"

If the above holds true, then we can deduce that there is a good chance Silverstone Classic 2020 too will need to be postponed or cancelled due to the high number of visitors from overseas, especially those who compete in the event.

Formula 1 has been formally told it will not be granted an exemption to the British government's requirements for all travellers arriving in the country to be put in quarantine.

The news means the British Grand Prix will almost certainly be unable to go ahead on the July date it had originally been looking at.

UPDATE from the organisers.

"We promised you an update before the end of May… and it is with a heavy heart that we bring you news that the 2020 Silverstone Classic will not be going ahead."

"2020 tickets
Anyone who has a ticket will have the option to roll their tickets over to the 2021 event or request a full refund. There are a number of measures we need to put in place first, but we will be back in touch with all ticket buyers in June with details of the next steps. In light of the current situation, we have a reduced team who are dealing with a high number of enquiries, so please do bear with us.

We’ll be in touch soon. In the meantime, and above all else, stay safe and healthy.
"

All those who have purchased tickets should be receiving the above communique directly from the organizers.

If you have any questions please PM me.

Sad times, but I hope you and your families are safe and well.

Dulan

Sad times indeed.

Please let me be the first to formally thank you Dulan for your hard work (regardless of the outcome).

Thank you both for your support and enthusiasm.

However, we are not done celebrating the Vee's 20th Anniversary just yet. ;)

Stay tuned.......

That's a real shame but if we're taking a 12 month pause, I'd be up for participating in the celebrations next year! Can we get even more cars out on track next year?

Real shame but not a surprise. Great work Dulan just needs doing again next year. Hope we get a big turnout to justify your efforts. I will definitely be there.

Shame to see the event not happening this year. I’d like to echo the posts above and say thanks to Dulan for his continued enthusiasm and effort organising this meet for us. It can be very time consuming behind the scenes and off the forum. Please keep up the great work, that (from experience) can often seem unappreciated. It is, very much... well done.

Look forward to seeing what you may have planned instead Dulan. :approve:

Thank you all for your enthusiasm.

Well, even though we are not able to enjoy Silverstone Classic, the super event that it is, in 2020, I hope the attached will serve as a memento to celebrate the Vee's 20th Anniversary.

Developing The Clio V6 Road Cars is v6Clio.net's version of the 'Clio V6 Story', which highlights some of the facts related to TWR's involvement that led to the birth of the Clio V6 as we know it, which were either missed or understated in the book titled Clio V6 Story (Wake Upp Editions, ISBN 2-910824-02-0).

I would like to thank MarkK, Duncan, and James for their contributions, especially Mark for writing up the first draft. :approve:

Of course, as Club Registrar, and overall V6 guru, Duncan reviewed the text to ensure that the write up is factually correct and James offered useful insight into its layout.

The plan was to produce booklets and hand them out to all attendees and visitors who showed an interest in our cars and/or visit our display area. However, now that COVID-19 put paid to our plans, please feel free to download a PDF version of Developing The Clio V6 Road Cars, which I hope will act as a suitable substitute.

Of course, as far as mementos go, downloading and reading through a PDF cannot be compared to a hardcopy booklet printed on glossy paper, but I hope this will go some way towards celebrating the Vee's 20th Anniversary.

We even went a step further and had special banners created to showcase the fact that we were celebrating the Vee's 20th. My thanks go to Honsta and James for their hard work in doing the artwork, the many iterations reviewing and refining the artwork, and finally getting the banners made up. Hon did a brilliant job with the artwork. :salut:

Note that since we live in a world where our planet needs saving, the newly commission banners will be reusable - they were designed to have the appropriate anniversary or, for use at other times, a suitable message to be stuck on so that we can keep reusing the same banners at every future event.

So, yes, it is extremely disappointing to have had the event cancelled, but given the circumstances, there wasn't much else the organisers could do, which is why they held on until the last possible moment before pulling the plug.

Roll on 2021, and hope to see as many of you at Silverstone Classic 2021, and we can then make up for lost time!

Stay safe.

Dulan
