Oil Filters - Help Needed

Hi Folks,

Ordered my 20 litres of Silkolene PRO-S Oil from OPIE - great guys great prices ;-) I also ordered 2 purolator filters which were listed for Clio V6 Mk1 & Mk2. These are highly regarded filters so I thought I would try one.

Now when I took the engine cover off last night to do an oil change I found that the purolator filters are at least 1/2 the length of the filter already installed (blue french jobby). Is this nomal for non OEM filters. The stock one is about 5 inches long whilst the purolator one is about 2.5 inches (only approximate lengths).

I didn't continue with the oil change despite having double checked the filter was listed for the V6 correctly. OPIE are calling me back with confirmation of the filter suitability from the manufacturers.

Has anyone fitted non OEM filters ? or have any comments on V6 filter sizes in general or from different filter suppliers ? I was worried about surface area of the filter medium given the filter is so much smaller than the original.

Regards

Martin

I have always used OEM filters.

Not worth trying to save a few pounds or pence.

Only time not used OEM is for very special applications in particular cranes off shore for hydraulic circuits.

Then the filters were filtering to extreme limits.

Sorry folks maybe I wasn't clear ...

Thanks for the help so far.

I didn't intend to use the purolator ones to save money, I was just trying to get the best filter to use.

I will report back my findings but may go for OEM depending on what purolator come back with.

The V6 filter is a new line of theirs and it may be they have got the part #'s mixed up. OPIE have had the Laguna 24v V6 filter side by side with the Clio 24v V6 filter and the Laguna one is the same size as my V6 OEM one whilst the Clio one is smaller as I indicated.

I like a challenge and doing a bit of research ;-)

The Silkolene will have to stay in the can a little longer rather than the engine ...

I know its an old thread but I have the same problem

I have just received my Opie Oils order but the oil filter they sent is really small, so I sent a e-mail to them about it, its a UFI oil filter ( never heard of the make) type 23.418.00

I think there missing the point I was trying to make, this filter is not the same as a Renault one in size, its listed for a 1.5 DCI on most filter sites, it will pyhicisally fit a 3.0 V6 ,but I am not happy about fitting it.
Just on the fact that a 3.0 litre engine will produce twice as much carbon containmation of the oil as a 1.6, so having a small filter means it will have less filter paper in it and therefore will get blocked quicker, look at race cars they have a small bucket sized filter on them.

please read my e-mai to Opie and there response, Opie sound like they have gone all corporate.

I am not saying its the wrong filter by part number, what I am saying is I am not happy its up to the job and will be getting a full sized one from elsewere.

You may wish to bear this in mind if you were going to get a filter with your oil from Opie.

Hi

I have just received my order for oils and an oil filter for my Clio V6, but the oil filter is to small, yes I know it’s the right part number according to the suppler but it’s just too small UFI 2341800

Its only 51mm high but original filter is 89mm high, if you look at the two links below these show original size and other filter manufactures cross references against the original Renault part number.

I look forwards to your comments.

Hi Steve

The external dimentions of the filter are a little irrelevant to if it is correct or not. As long as it screws on securely and filters the oil properly, it doesn't really matter how big it is. A good example are Skyline filters. When they arrive from Japan, the filter is the size of a large beer can, but the UK equivalent is the same as the Micra filter, less than half the size of the Japanese Skyline filters.

Ok been doing some research on filters

This is very good site that shows you what you get for your money.

My Opie filter is too small, some of the correct filters are Mann W712/47 and Framm PH5566A which are the same size as the original renault one, also the one supplied by Opie has a pressure relief valve set at 18 PSI while the Mann and Framm are at 0.8 bar which is about 12 PSI.

So I am going to junk the Opie filter and buy a Framm, Mamm or Original one

I've got a cooper filter on mine iirc Z1277 and thats a bit smaller, Fred told me off when i went to see him so shall be getting a gen one soon when i get chance, never had any probs though
