Newbie from Manchester

Ok. Good to know gents. We can get our Mk6 Edition 35 Gti in the garage and it's a pretty sizeable lump. Over 2m wide with the mirrors out and to be honest, folding the mirrors doesn't reduce the size as much as you'd hope!

If it helps, our current mk5 gti is a tighter fit that the Vee ever was. U don't actually appreciate how small they are until they are sat next to a modern hatch

That is very helpful actually. Good to know. I'm generally of the opinion that if a Mk6 Golf will go in with the mirrors folded then I should be able to crowbar a Vee in there. [cmilie=iconcheers.gif]

So after a bit of thinking I think I've dismissed the Ph1 above as It appears that the cambelt has never been done in its lifetime. I'd forgive it if it's had one at 5 years and then not recieved its second one but the dealer isn't able to provide any evidence that it's ever had one. Too much of a gamble for me.

So, tomorrow morning I'm going down to Essex to take a look at this Ph2 below:

http://classifieds.pistonheads.com/clas ... 004/934742

Ex-RUK car. Think it was Jeremy Townsends? Or am I wrong?

It's not perfect, needs a front bumper respray, cambelt service and has a small whirr coming from the waterpump but i've negotiated a cracking price for it and if it all adds up then intend to get it back to Manchester and then have the cambelt and water pump service down at Birchdown on its next journey out.

So If I go for it I take it that, due to it needing a cambelt service and a waterpump, I should just take it mega easy and keep it below 3k rpm with no hard accelerations? There seems to be very little evidence of Vee's having catastrophic belt, pulley or waterpump failures so I'm fairly happy that I can nurse it back to Manchester without it dropping a belt or pulley.

Completely understand you reason behind not proceeding with the mk1. I would be cautious too knowing the cambelt hasnt ever been done!

On a brighter note JT's BG MK2 looks like a cracking purchase. If you have negotiated a good price to include a major service then go for it! Will give you peace of mind knowing you have had all of the major work done yourself at the start of your ownership. I would also consider getting the clutch changed at the same time if i were you (if you havent already?).

Go easy on the way home. You would be ridiculously unlucky to have a failure but to save tempting fate just drive nicely 8)

I intend to! If you see a slow moving Vee on Saturday between Essex asnd Manchester then you know why! 3k rpm max all the way.

Hopefully the car stacks up when I get down there. He's been very honest about it and I'm going in to it open minded and in the knowledge that it'll need Cambelt, Clutch and Waterpump straight from the off and that I'll probably have the wheels refurbed and the front end resprayed when the summer comes. It's not immaculate but from the sounds of things, it's largely just cosmetic refining that needs to be done rather than anything else

Nice to be looking at a car with a bit of known history to it. It's a non-plaque car being Ex-RUK. One of the mythical few by the sounds of it?

Just for the record, JT said it had a plaque on it when he owned it (couldnt remember the number though), so someones removed it since.
Its an odd thing to do, but if the car is in good condition, its hardly the end of the world.

I think it looks a very nice car for the money (its criminally cheap!!), the cambelt is still 3 years over due but I'd be amazed if you had any issues with it on the way back if you just cruise. You would be the very unlucky if it did.

When i got my current v6, the cambelt was 4 years overdue, i gingerly drove it straight from seller to mechanic to get it changed, to be honest it would of probably been ok to get home, but i couldn't bring myself to drive a ticking time bomb with the risk of a 4-5k bill ahead.

Hmm that does put me off a little. I was on the understanding that it had never had a plaque as it was an RUK car. Does a lack of plaque affect the value seriously? I wasn't too concerned that it'd never had one but it being removed does concern me.

Surely you will be able to do some research with the reg and chassis no if needs be? Would be worth clarifying first.

The lack of plaque is absolutely fine if it never actually came with one in the first place (ie ex - RUK car). If it did originally have a plaque then it would obviously be a question in anyone's mind as to why it doesnt have one anymore.

Massively confused now as the thread below implies it never had a plaque (which is fine with me) but DDouble reckons it did originally. Are there any thread on here that can confirm either way?

Someone's taken it off. It was there when I sold it"

I know i've said it already but have you messaged Kevred? although I believe you're after a ph2? don't worry though mate, its well worth waiting for the right one. Does seem odd though doesn't it, in this climate you CANT spend your money lol.

I did PM Kevred before Christmas but think he was unsure as to whether it was actually for sale and also potentially after more than I'm willing to spend on a Phase 1 at this moment in time.

You're right though, can't give my money away at the moment! ;)

Thats doesn't surprise me TBH :tumble: ..... there is another ph1 at west sussex specialist cars, he will do the cambelt before he sells I think. Its a ph1 though and he does charge more than he should potentially. really depends what your after. Always worth keeping a bit of extra in the bank in case :race: im happy to go have a look if need be for you? any chance to drive!!
