[House build thread] Andy’s house ( not from scratch )

This is what my door look like after a single coat, any more than this and it will start to gloss up
Does it brush on? Or cloth/pad applied?

I have similar doors and I've had a tin of Danish oil sitting for ages. Can't bring myself to apply it because I feel it'll be too dark lol

You can use either method but I used a microfibre mini roller as you can load the brush and get literally no splashback, I applied it to the door in the photo back in March and its still looking good now.

It can be quite syrup like when you decant it so to help it along I shoved the tin in a bucket of warm water and gave it a little stir before applying. If your door is already coated with a clear finish it'll be worthwhile giving it a little rub down, I didnt need to do mine as they were new and I loved the micro splinters 😅

Find a door, do a test area, let it dry and see what you think.

Really happy with how the office has turned out.

No pics but cleaned up and PVA/water sealed the plaster.

In other news I have found out why the UFH in the lounge wasn’t working.

Someone has been fiddling prior to us moving in and swapped the pair of actuators that control the lounge with the pair that control the stair area.

Spotted it as wife Bond was helping me do my rehab exercises and commented the lounge floor was warm. Cue me checking the thermostat and it’s off. Hunt around the house and sure enough it was the stairs area thermostat on.

Swapped them over and warm feet!

so all the digging aorund and testing, it was the wrong thermostat?
No , other way.

Wrong manifold actuators .

On UFH the thermostat controls the signal to the water heater ( boiler ) and in turn triggers the actuator ( or two actuators in this case ) to open once a target temp has been reached.

Each zone has its own actuator(s)

Someone for some unknown reason has muddled up 4 actuators. The lounge actuators were on the piping for the stairs area and vice versa. I have no idea why. The single reason I found out there was a fault was I bled the system after two flow meters became stuck. Then I noticed the problem as I went around each zone trying to fix the issue.

It was fortuitous that Wife Bond was lying on the floor in the lounge when she noted the floor was warm and I was confused as the thermostat on the wall was set to off manually, by me. Cue me checking which of the 27million thermotats was on ...

IMG_3290.webpIMG_3289.webpIMG_3288.webpIn today’s episode of something broke …

Today I changed a heating system power head.

Just before I went on holiday I noted a rapid clicking sound from one of the Honeywell power heads.

The IT man in me turned off the power and back on again. Voila , fixed.

Or so I thought. Yesterday I noted it was Baltic upstairs. The thermostats were below their fall back temps and asking for heat. The boiler was happy to obliged but the manifold wasn’t seeing the temperature.

The power head was again clicking.

Off to Screwfix today , bing, bash , bosh , circuit tripped, adjusted , fixed!

If you ever get a failure on a Honeywell valve you can use the lever to manually open it and lock it open , then it will just parrot the other zone for time control . Saves you being cold in the meantime.

This is what I did. Knacker is I either had hot water , or UFH.

Useful tip though 👍
