From the pictures above, the cam-crank markings look a tooth out (although that could be the angle the photo was taken at). Are the + & - markings defo aligned?
If you're getting back-firing from the carb, that would suggest a timing issue and/or poor spark.
I assume your talking about the engine that is in bit ? If so that another engine I stripped and need to build, I have ordered a new aei coil so I will see if that changes anything.
Well little update time.
My timing is 180 deg out. I swapped TDC wires back forth and changed carb that did nothing. I took carb off and put original back on sprayed a shit ton of wd40 down idle jet hole test drove and it was better like back to normal next breath its shit again. So it looks like the cause is carb related and the other I tested a while back must have had the same fault !
I take my hat off to Chris for sticking with this car.Neglect and previous owner bodges have made his job difficult. That many things have been changed its even harder to get to the bottom of a fault.Back to basics chris, your car ran ok for a while so whats changed?Barking up the wrong tree will just make it worse. Its so easy with these things to take one step forward and four steps back without even knowing.
He hasnt had much fun with it . Ill give him that. But he inherited a car that stripped of all the good parts and issues with standard kit. Granted the loom was knackered.
As you say though - something must have been working , so work on the rule of whats changed.
Have/has any of the carbs been running of another working car ?
I still need to road test the car since latest carb clean. I have been busy putting interior plastics back in and rear bench but I have been getting all the bits back that I sold. My rep front grill is in for paint at work but the painter has been suspended for argument with a manager that did not go well haha.
The picture of the white clips is for the rear door cards from Latvia I think 10x clips about 4 quid deliverd.
Ok after being spurred on about going on the CS TurboRenault track day in August I thought I better get some work done on the car. I have most of the parts I need I just could not be arsed to do any of it! Well I booked the tickets today so I began the long overdue Maintainence. First I removed the front suspention as I have new springs dampers and bearings but needed the top mount and donut etc so I'm taking them to work Monday so I can swap everything over. Second I removed the sump in situ it can be done although fiddlely this is because I need to remove the Pistons so I can swap my rings. I've drained the coolant system ready for the head off but that will have to wait. Upon inspection of the sump I noticed a few quite big bits of metal mabey 10 or so and a long bristle like off a wire brush haha. Well I hope that does not mean bad news.
Dampers all built up with new bearings ready to refit, I will leave the offside one off for now as it leaves good access to the crank pully side of the sump. Also made a start on removing dizzy drive and water pipes off the water pump and removed rocker cover. I need some more tools from work as the 3/8" drive ratchet is not up to the job of removing the head bolts.
Hopefully but I still have many man hours left of work to do. I want to purchase a good brake bleeder like we have at work see picture but they are a few hundred quid. It would just save so much messing about.
I removed the rocker and push rods kept in order all look in fair condition, then all head bolts out and turbo off exhaust manifold.
So now it's all loose just 2x water pipes off the pump and turbo off downpipe.
Boring update.
Ok the head is off the water pump off is off the head inlet exhaust off the head. I will take head to work on Tuesday give it a good clean over and remove any remaining sealer from water pump. I've also removed the end caps ready for Pistons out but indeed some big washers to hold the Liners in place so a trip to some hardware store tomorrow.
The bearings look in bead nick and the shells look good also. I will get the head skimmed I think as ive measured the head and it seams to Be just under 74mm.
Everything is now ready to take to work so I can change the rings send the head off unless the stright bar shows it to be a good one. I was going to bolt both manifolds on before refit but I think it will be back heavy and might be a bit of a bastard to get everything lined up.
I remove the shells they 0.25 are these oversized ? They look ok but should i replace with new 0.25 ?
