The other thing is perspective.
180 bhp has to be the best amount of power for a fast road car, and it is a great amount of fun, punchy, hard and will destroy most things on a quick squirt basis, 230 bhp is good but feels to rough on road as you need to batter it more due to cam choise and turbo spec, but better on track. But on track, even at 230 bhp you're going to find problems with the long straights and you are working the C1j very hard. 230bhp on track (and this isn't even competition) is very average, you will be beating a lot of other cars, but you still need more.
As for the gearbox situation, I'm led to believe the standard box is good for 250bhp and I agree, when hunting serious power, the gearbox conversion is the thing that would put most off.
