Extra turbo

Volt drop the starter cable incase it’s that.
Disconnect injector and coil fuses
One probe on positive post on battery and one on starter stud, get someone to crank it whilst watching the voltmeter.
If the multimeter reads over 0.4v then the Starter cable is duff inside

Updates

Cured the lazy start issue. Fitted the megane battery on, which improved things a bit. Fitted some beefy 35mm2 earths from engine block and it cranks over mega fast now, so a combination of both poor batt and poor earth 😒

Been chasing minor coolant leaks as a few joints are weeping when stood for a few days, no leaks when running and the system holds good pressure when tested. Cheap chinese silicone hoses for you, were ok years ago but the standards have dropped massively now.

Have nipped every joint and its OK for now, but the plan is to bin them eventually for sfs or samco matt black hoses.

Had the pleasure of calibrating the fuel gauge yesterday as had no idea how much fuel was in when low.

Drained the tank and gob full of fuel, fill 5ltr container, pour into tank, repeat, get covered in fuel etc. Worst job ever but done, been putting this off as i knew it was a s**t job. It said 5 ltrs left on last calibration and had about 3ltr in the tank so not the best. This time i stuck 5ltrs of fuel in and set that at 0 so it will always have a gallon if your really stuck. Stopped at 38ltrs as i ran out of fuel.

Its been out on the shopping run a few times recently and have clocked up 80 or so miles in total on the new setup and its running great. Just needs mapping now, have ordered Astra vxr blue 470cc injectors to replace the ancient saab reds in it and some fresh oil to change before.

Still love the retro stance

Absolute dogshite quality the chinese hoses now mate, i assume they are slightly pourous, and the type d just finds its way out of any gap!
The quality of chinese stuff has always been variable at best, I remember doing a groupbuy of chinese intercoolers. Bought 15 and sold the lot. Quality was great.

Someone found the supplier and ordered one and they had changed the core and welding was done by Stevie Wonder. That was withing a 6 week period! No quality control at all.

Them gpi intercoolers went right down the pan. Im starting to avoid any of the ching spec intercoolers and rads, last few i have seen were wank.

That stack dash looks the bollocks got me thinking now .... what model is it ???. Also pleased to see an efi conversion gone well fair few of us had no end of bloody trouble hence I went f4rt in the end hope to see it out at a few shows again top stuff as always 🙌🙌👍👍👍👍

Cheers mate, its running spot on even on the base map, idles great, drives good too. Its cost a fucking fortune to do right though. Stack dash is ST8130 road legal.

Not much to report, Extra van running in is going well though around 170miles done now.

Done quite a few basic adjustments to the ecu map, ign and fuelling, drives really well considering. Still not boosted it properly yet, but some footage on the way to Lidl last week

Had to tame the pops and bangs on overrun a little, as it was savage with ign cells at 0kpa set to 0.0 between 2.5-5k. Upped it to more realistic levels of ign at 0kpa and its a lot less asbo.

Bottomed out the original to do list too

In other news, i hit the switch the other night and bought a GTX2860r gen2. No idea if it will turn up before mapping. Will see!

Running in miles going well, 280 or so miles covered now. Ive been to outstanding places of local beauty last 2 nights in the North Yorkshire moores for exercise ;)

In preperation for mapping i fitted the vxr blue 470cc injectors, recalibrated fuel table to suit and changed the oil and filter.

A quick pic next to this wall near me, love the industrial look

Another near my work to remind me that i will have to go back to work eventually 😆 note soot mark above side exit, its a bit richer on boost with the vxr injectors.

Today has been a good day, postman knocked at the door and my new turbo has arrived

20200515_120504.jpg

Will store it for a rainy day, as i need a 76trim exhaust housing, new 70mm trumpet for my airfilter and silicone bend. Tempted to fit a tial rear housing with external wastegate.

Checked the boost circuit for leaks this morning. Dug out my home made caps for the circuit and used a small compressor for an airbrush.

I would normally bung the airfilter and fill from the airfilter hose with a good compressor. However this compressor does not have much power so initially split it into smaller sections that the compressor could cope with.

Disconnected the hot side pipework from turbo to intercooler first which was OK held 18lbs of pressure.

20200519_115002.jpg

Done the intercooler next on its own, held 18lbs pressure again without any issues.

20200519_121036.jpg

Done the cold side pipework next, disconnected the pipework at the air temp sensor and bunged, and filled post intercooler.

This side had quite a leak at one of the hose joints and would not fill and hold any pressure initially. Easy fix, just needed the hose clip and hose adjusting/tightening furthur at a joint and held 18lbs.

With this sorted i reconnected the intercooler on the cold side, and filled from the hot side, which was ok and held 18lbs pressure.

20200519_122258.jpg

Reconnected the hot side pipework and filled from the turbo end of the hot side pipework. Held 18lbs ok.

Apart from inlet and turbo, thats almost the whole boost circuit holding good pressure.

Well worth doing for an hours work, and to save any hassle on the rolling road when mapping, no leaks = more hp and faster spool so all good.

good stuff and something that alot of people overlook (y)

Ive found a lot of people do miss the basic checks and have substandard performance to suit.

Interestingly, years ago i left my charge temp probe out by accident when it was carb, leaving a 3mm hole. Still made 1.5 bar of boost with a little bit more lag/less torque in the midrange.

I actually dont think a lot of people notice the odd boost leak unless the pressure is down a lot or a lot of lag.

On all of the gtts ive fixed in that respect, the performance difference is always night and day 😁
