Clio Clio dci bargain daily driver

A few updates overdue due to lack of time with the new house move etc. Its been a good little van :D

First of all my xenons turned up broke:( i was devastated as i had been looking for a set for ages. Basically the adjusters had smashed to bits in transit ! I stripped the covers off the headlights, pulled my normal lights to bits for parts and a combination of epoxy resin/silicone and 5 hours of pain we have a repaired set of lights. Took me 2 hours to fit as one of the bolts holding the fecking bumper was rounded off but we got there in the end and now we have sport grill too. Fitted some smd £2 sidelights off ebay as the old yellow bulbs did not cut it and polished the knackers off the headlamps with wet & dry and jobs a gooden.

A few pics after a good wash and gtechniq c4 permanent trim restorer.20160221_131753.webp 20160221_131802.webp 20160221_131810.webp 20160221_131826.webp

Makes an awesome van 6'×3' sheets of plasterboard in no bother amongst other bits20160304_142114.webp 20160304_140633.webp 20160304_164001.webpFinally got my clip up and running. After having a feck about trying to get it going on windows 8 and a virtual copy of xp which would not work as the bloody usb would not work properly i managed to squeeze the software onto the small amount of memory on my old eeepc that i used for peugeot planet. This revealed a couple of faults on the engine ecu and shit loads on the uch lol. Cleared all and the only fault that remains is the map sensor coherence which is due to overboost in higher gears 20lbs and management no likey.20160312_222906.webp 20160312_211738.webp 20160312_130041.webpAnother issue that is getting gradually worse is the turbo. The engine has always been intermittently smoking since day one and I have noticed that after leaving the engine idling for a few mins i.e in traffic then driving on initial acceleration you get plenty of blue smoke and the reassuring drip of oil out of the exhaust housing onto the downpipe. A quick look on gumtree and found a good used turbo locally for £70 so got that to fit soon. Also the front tyres are about bald so got another pair of yokos ready for my new wheels :D20160314_175109.webpRunning totals
£733 last time
£70 turbo
£80 pair of yokos
£883...to be continued

Its a trusty little steed. Everybody loves it :D @Sheryl_O has named him Donald dci lol :) my mileage has dramatically reduced now i have moved back to Redcar to a couple of miles a day so realistically i dont even need it but it will save wear and tear to the other cars. I did have naughty thoughts of pulling the derv out one day and dropping a hot turbo lump in of some description but then it goes from daily > project car:rolleyes:

Windows 7 would work ok but cant be chewed messing about reinstalling the operating system. Pain in the arse lol.

New windscreen going in tomorrow, finally be crack free:D

So on Saturday i finally had my tyres fitted to the freshly powdercoated williams wheels i had stashed in the garage :D Paired them up with new wheel bolts and silver centre caps that i snipered off ebay a while back. Looks pretty sweet needs some lows 20160402_123220.webp 20160402_123249.webp 20160402_132338.webp 20160402_155117.webp 20160402_155159.webp
However things are not 100% as always seems the fecking case as i have loads of drone at speed now ! As seen above i had 2 new tyres and 2 good condition part worns. I noticed a sharp edge on one of the part worns (i.e trackday sawtoothing) never thought any thing of it as usually drives off ok.

When my mate fitted the tyres he said put the part worns on the front as they might be noisy. They all balanced up fine with minimal weight required which was good. The problem is they are mega noisy to be honest like a bad wheel bearing. I know that it was fine on stock wheels so no wheel bearing issues so all fine in that department. I took it up to Newcastle last night and the jagged edge was still there and really noisy on some surfaces. On the way back the noise was less and the tread seems more level. More investigation required by looks of things - need to check to make sure the tyre is not like a 50 pence piece or whatever. May try front to back swap.

Part worns - never to be trusted. Next time i will just buy new all round as i have had a few issues with used in the past.

Swapped wheels front to back which has made the road noise 100% better. I also noticed some monkey has flogged the disc retaining screws in on the drivers side disc, they were not flush with the face on the disc maybe 1mm proud which was not helping matters. Had to drill them out which has cured a shimmy on the front brakes that the car has always had - i assumed warped disc obviously not. I know a local renault specialists fitted new discs and pads a short while before i bought it. Bunch of cowboys.

Find me a nice set of prima grp a alloys and you can have the wheels @Mart :D

Wasn't there a guy selling a set of those on the GTT FB page? Can't think of his name now (Lee?), but he's got a blue GTT, and the alloys were white.

Alternatively, I've got a lovely set of Azev A's I can throw into the deal instead ;)

That set sold pretty fast didnt even get a sniff ! Seen 2 sets of 17" for sale but too big for the clio sadly.

So had the wheels on a week and everything is going smoothly. Car is parked nicely off street on the drive on the new house. Until i get in from work one day and i see a fecking woman squeezing a shitty old shopping bike past it on the drive - turns out she had been accessing the neighbours house from our drive. Looked at the car and the rear qtr had a nice scratch on it, fuming.!

After a bit of digging we found out it was the carer for next door. Apparantly she thought it was a shared drive (1st excuse) then the previous neighbour give consent to use it (2nd excuse) not leaving my 3k mountain bike out the front (3rd excuse its a shitty old thing dont care) anyway all hell broke loose at this point and she was told not to ever come back on the drive again. What pissed me off is that she did not care about it at all, all she kept saying is how am i going to get into the neighbours - i just told her bluntly dont care - Her dickhead of a boyfriend offered to t-cut it so just told them both to feck off. Luckily it was just a minor mark and not down to metal, as i would have ended up taking them to court or forking out of my own pocket to get it sorted. Anyway the shared gate is now bolted and locked (did not want it anyway) and i am going to knock up some drive gates asap.

Give it a wash, used 3m fast cut on the scratches (awesome all gone) super resin polish and finished with collinite 476s

Since buying the clio the engine has smoked heavy blue from cold/standing when accelerating but ok when hot. I read horror storys of sticky piston rings all over the net and was unsure if that was the issue. I did check for play in the turbo shaft when i first got the car and it was minimal but did notice oil on top of the cat and all over the compressor cover.

Anyway ive done a couple of thousand miles and the oil leak has got steadily worse leaving a small drip on the drive. Initially i thought the leak was the oil filter housing seals but that was only half the problem. As the engine starts well it indicated the compression was good and the engine is not using oil i was placing bets on the turbo at fault or knackered valve guides etc.

I decided more diagnosis was required. I removed the downpipe that showed the exhaust wheel covered in oil that proved the turbo was at fault. No oil in exhaust manifold pre turbo. The compressor wheel was full of oil too that indicated it was very close to failure that no doubt would have caused a runaway and cost me an engine.

Took about 4hrs to change, every bolt was shot and had to be removed with a hex socket as they were very soft. Access was terrible but got there eventually in between rain showers. Fitted a brand new o.e turbo oil feed as mine looked rough and new studs. Fitted and primed the turbo by disconnecting the injector plugs, no leaks so reconnected the plugs and fired it up. No smoke at all:D
Some pics of the offending turbo

Runs very well now. I have noticed no turbo whistle or siren noises on spool engine sounds a lot better. The plastic boost hose was also fitted incorrectly so got that on properly - could have been causing a boost leak before. Overall power is better and mpg up 64mpg tonight.

Last update £833
Turbo oil feed £35
5ltrs Shell helix ultra 5/40 fully synth and purflux filter/seals £35 (oil on offer £18 win)
Exhaust studs £5

Total £908 - to be continued..

So the old clio has seen plenty of use in the last 2 weeks over 1000 miles and no issues ! Trip down to @Kris M 's 600+ on a tank easy driving at normal speeds.

Scenic pic20160501_160026.webp20160429_183601.webp 20160429_172314.webpPicked up a mint set seats off gumtree for £30 ! Involved a road trip to manchester to pick up. Hole free and look to be out of a low mileage car, No pics of fitting as started pissing down (as soon as i work on this it rains lol ) 20160508_160724.webp 20160508_160733.webp

Cleaned the seatbelts too. They were horrible and previous cleaning attempts did not work. Used vanish gold which worked awesome ! Soak in a bucket for 5 mins, peg to hold seatbelt fully out, scrub with nailbrush job done !20160508_160826.webp 20160508_160752.webp
Also fixed another thing that was really pissing me off. The glovebox was all over the place - a common issue if you google it. Was basically flush at one side and crooked at the other. Drove a self tapper in from underneath job done in 30 secs. 20160507_122922.webp 20160507_122919.webp

Also got this to fit big thanks to @Paul B (y)
