Cant polish a turd???....yeah what ever!

Great stuff Brett. This is turning out to be very interesting. Look forward to seeing it when all done and dusted.

The gearbox has indeed cleaned up very well......

Good stuff Brett :-)

Looks like it will be a snug fit, so the engine will be longitudinal layout ... do you need to move the front bulkhead at all ? If not I presume the gearbox tail will still fit within the boundary of the bodyshell - will it be on display out back like on a dub :)

Martin

When I was gearbox hunting Martin, I did think that it might have to poke slightly clear of the bumper. However, after getting stuck in more, it needs zero baulkhead modifications, zero bumper modifications and zero subframe modifications. It fits pretty perfectly with a 20mm gap between both baulkhead and bumper. The driveshaft even line up correctly somehow. The tail of the box is only about 170mm wide so I can use the original exhaust holes too.
The most extreme thing I have to do is cut the old mounts off and weld the new ones to the forward facing members lower down in the engine bay. The gearbox hanger/crossmember will be neatly tucked away where the old collector box used to be and fix on to the old silencer bracket holes. Makes what I think is a simple solution to hiding everything away.

Just saw your SRS post matey. Defo the right forum for parts/knowledge share etc :approve:

Re ko4s had I kept the RS you know my plans, so you could have had mine, but seeing as there's lots of interest in the car it's more than likely going now.

Have a word with the Ben from the Turbo Unit (has a trader section on the SRS forum). He's who I was going to get to hybrid some RS6 turbos once I realised they were effectively LOBA 600s! Very knowledgeable guy and seemed a good egg as well. All he does is turbos, so he should know of some KO4s.

Yeah there is shit loads on there to be fair. Spotted some RS6 turbo's for like 750 quid which as a starting point would make the clio balistic as all the plumbing will be new and better flowing. Bit of an eye opener compared to Audizine in the US. Plenty of people pushing 6-700hp from relatively straight forward upgrades but I should imagine that's because of our better fuel.

If it was me, I'd go hybrid C5 RS6 turbos. Plug, play and forget application - they'll never need to be upgraded unless you fall out of a tree and want 800+ or something ridiculous like that (which the block has been proven to handle by the way!)

I've been informed that RS6 hybrids are good for 650+, so at 350-400 they'll be well within their operting margins with very little in the way of reliability issues. I imagine you could just use the one of them with the 034 Mortorsport conversion as well and still get to your target power. The C5 RS6 hybrids are still quite a small unit with a quick spool up that limits lag, although I know you said previously you wanted a nice bit of lag to prevent mid-corner boost killing you!

Ben would be able to part-ex you some KO4s for your KO3s I'd expect, though as you say loads of KO4s out there.

This is the problem. There is literaly loads of oem stuff to choose from which will give amazing results. Its 6 of one, half a dozen the other.
Single turbo is so easy to do and gives me just one localised part of the engine bay that gives me a heat issue. Yes there will be MUCH more lag but I'll either be pottering along at 2000rpm in it or ringing its neck keeping the revs above 4500rpm so it doesn't bother me. Weight is also reduced a little as the lack of a 2nd K03/4 and it assosiated pipework is removed.
Twin K03/4's, tials, gt28's etc etc are pretty much all off the shelf and again, very easy to do as lots of people have done it. They give great performance (silly infact), need next to zero one off parts to be made and will work fine in the back of the vee.

As it stands, I'm getting the thing up and running as soon as I can. If I can get a pair of K04 or C5 Rs6 turbo's to start with then its a big bonus. By the looks of it I'll be looking at around 330hp out the blocks to begin with. I should image that'll be quite nice in a clio anyway! Lol

Yeah the options and possibilites is mind boogling really. Especially considering the challenges when you want to do anything to the Renault 3.0!!!

Heat would be the main issue as you say and I think a single turbo is more sensible in that respect, it's not just the extra turbo but all the other gubbins and pipework needed to service it that is the issue I guess.

330 will be a massive difference. The huge increase in torque everywhere across the range will be the most noticeable thing I'd expect. I hardly ever red line the RS as there's no need, the torque alone rips everything along nicely. The S4 is the torquier (that a word?) of the two 2.7t variants as well.

Do you know what the weight differences are between the 2.7t and the 3.0 na? And are you envisaging a trophy look or more of an R26.r approach? BHP/ton will already be massively improved so I imagine you could leave it looking pretty stock inside without any real detriment to the performance.

I'm not sure what the weight difference is Jon but when I removed the L7X I remember a couple of us struggling to move it around. However moving the audi lump around isn't that hard at all.

As far as looks, I keep finding myself going from one thing to another. Really not sure to be honest. I've considered spraying it iceberg silver with standard rear bumper and engine covers as I love the look of standard ph1's. Then on the other hand I want it to be propper balls out trophy style, everything simplified, engine all on show and a certain livery to finish it off. I also want an acid vee! Lol To be honest I think once the engine bay and interior is resprayed in battle ship grey and the engine is installed I'll make my mind up.

Sounds like the audi lump is usefully lighter then :approve:

I think a combo of the two would look brilliant. Fairly standard looking on the outside with a few subtle touches, but with a spartan but functional interior (r26.r esque) and a completly stripped engine bay/front boot leaving as many of the workings of the car on show as possible.

That's just me though. Defo wouldn't leave it looking like a standard road car though.

Problem is that I reckon I'd be a prat not to fit a full rollcage to a clio that is approaching and in the future exceeding well over 400hp. Not just for my safety but others who passenger it. One of which will be my son when he is older. How standard does scaffolding look in a clio? lol

Yeah, totally agree on the roll cage for safety's sake. No reason why that would mean it would have to take on the look of a gutted track car mind.

If the full cage was colour coded and merged nicely into the dash I'd arguably say it'd fall under the subtle modifications - though door bars may ruin the subtlety of course!

Well now that my 172 is royaly fecked and my garden is near completion it time for another big push to get this project moving along again. Me, my old man and brother will be doing bits over the next few weeks including the engine install so fingers crossed, theres a slight possibility of it being done for France this year. Have exchanged a few emails with Douge at MRC and the engine management will be quite easy as the audi ecu can be treated like a stand alone. Ive decided to ditch the MAF sensor as it'll make the pipework much more tidy and alot shorter. Only draw back is i'll Be limited to 1.5bar of boost but I can live with that!
After much thought, I've decided to ditch nocturne or any other colour and resort back to iceberg silver. No trophy bits, no bumper cut out, no give aways. At least this way it's straight forward and still to my liking. When I originally changed to nocturne, I wanted something different as every show was full of silver ph1s. It's a much different story now and it's a sea of ph2s in I.B or L.Y. The only give away externally will be the 18" ph2 wheels and 350mm brake discs.........I can live with that though!

Finally someone who has the same thoughts on MAF ;) But where does the limitation come from? Can't you wire the MAP directly into the ECU? If so isn't then the (easily replaceable) sensor the boost limit at least on the electronic side?

The problem is that the ecu uses the MAF sensor purely to measure engine load not boost. The engine will be a little more tricky to map and won't run quite as smoothly as the original set up at part throttle but in this situation ill have more pro's than con's.
