5 GT Turbo Alpine Turbo Project

Sam

Thanks for the comments, I am in a little bit of a quandry really as to where I am going with this car. I have always wanted a Turbo 1 or Turbo 2 and just as funds become available they shoot up in value and are out of reach again. So i considered the conversion myself, and have made progress with engineering drawings for the chassis rails etc (with the help of Mydrian), and started to purchase original parts but the reality of it is that it is a hell of a lot of work(which I dont mind) and a lot of money to get it right, and it will always be a copy.
So I looked at the Groupe 2 and taking on board comments from guys on here and a little research I opetd for this option, but I have never intended to build a rally car as I have been there and done that so wanted a classic retro car for weekend fun, but as the shell is stripped I have taken the opportunity to strengthen the shell, and now I am considereing a roll cage and well you can see where this is going, however the car again is not N/A and therfore never quite as per spec, but nevertheless a turbo version would be nice I feel.
It would make a nice hill climb / spint car, So I will probabaly progress with a roll cage, This will when I ask him be made by ( hopefully)a good friend of mine at,

Brakes, I would like to use vented discs on the front with coilover shocks, and bring it up to spec without it looking like an out and out rally car, the intention is to paint it fairly low key in a pearl white with dark arches, orignal turbo stickers as per the Turbo 1 and the alipine stickers. I have never seen a group 2 in this colour scheme and quite fancy the rarity and the clean smart look.

I don't know enough about the rear arms and would be interessted in knowing more about what your dad did

Thanks
Gary

Sounds like a great plan.
I'll have to ask about the roller bearing conversion. I know it was very expensive to do, but I imagine it makes a huge difference to the stability of the rear end - particularly with sticky tyres putting forces through standard rubber bushes causing the rear toe to change when cornering.

Good work so far, I have some docs on the gr.2 suspension turret mods if you need, not that clear but better than nothing. For my two pennies I would not be going turbo 2 rep. They never come out right! And full of very expensive pieces needed!

Simon

on an old laptop i have some grp 2 docs and im sure some stuff for the turbo coupe, ill dig them out and upload them to the site

Like the arches GP2 do look good.
I dont think the blur would go,
I have alwase liked the yellow, white black colours.
I think just wite would also look good.
Just waitinh now to see the finished car.
Keep up the good work.

I love reading about builds like this. There is just stuff in here that I wouldnt have thought about , or even knew about.

Hi just noticed this thread & had a read through - you've made some great progress & gave some good information on the way (now I know what a group 2 arch is)

Bilstein coilovers below for mark 1 5's...

There are dampers listed above for the Alpine but can't tell whether they are coilovers

Personally, if I was in your position I think I would continue with your project rather than go after a T1/T2. You've come pretty far already and will end up with something very few people have nowadays. People are asking daft money for them (T2s) now and many of them have been sat around hardly used for years - meaning that as soon as you start to use it, big bills will appear. The tens of thousands of pounds people are asking now don't reflect the condition or the amount of work required to get the car into daily/regular use

Thats very interesting as I never knew they did the Group 2 as turbo cars, Looks as if he has undertaken a GT turbo carb conversion. It has papers but I'm not convinced it would be classed as atrue roup 2?

I still intend to convert twin weber 45s to turbo,

Thanks Guys

nice work, looks like the one i had you may need to trim the bulkhead where the pedal box is, out of interest did you do it through our skimlinks section?

Skimlinks? excuse my ignorance but what the hell is skinlinks!!

I have already modified the bulkhead as per group 2 spec
