Twingo Adey's Twingo GT (F4R+T 2.0ltr engine swap)

It's been a few weeks since blyton now and thanks to @Brigsy its had a pmt ali rad upgrade and mocal thermostatic takeoff and setrab external oil cooler. Temps now stay pretty solid in the 80s even with 28/30 degree ambient. I've done some constant silly pulls and can get it to the low 90s where it still stays solid until I drive sensibly and drop them down a little again. I'd defo say that's a win so cheers Jon 👍🏻

It's defo getting tight in there now. Next news is the turbo is on its way out, it was a second hand unit when I fitted it and as seen at Blyton it's starting to pass a little oil when warm. Still undecided on which route to go yet as currently the car is fantastic, I worry that a bigger turbo will make it useless and break more things. Will have a think on that.

I did a little Q&A video so popping that up and a turbo noises vid too. Give us a like and subscribe, it'll be much appreciated 😁

Big thanks to @CreweTube for sorting me this from his spare parts pile. Rs133 factory undertray. A swap of parts was done for my old 182 rad and fan pack. It has some interesting vents in but must do something 🤷🏻‍♂️ i will make it fit over the next few weeks. I've got some leave coming up so the plan is to sort the smokey turbo situation and fit this at the same time. Driving to work is getting fun, if I go through the towns and pull up in traffic when hot it does a pretty good bond car impression 😅

Yeah I couldn't quite figure out the point of the vents either. The front two obviously dump behind the radiator but the third one never lined up to anything on my car, maybe the exhaust on the RS?

Under tray looks good.

My Turbo only does it once in the Morning?? Which is strange. Think I’m going to sort the breather into A catch tank and See if that helps before I fit the new Turbo.

Any stem seals on the car Mark? That seems par for the course on a cold start for them to be failing and smokey start.

Agree with that. Smoke on start up is what's seeping through overnight then getting burnt off. My worn seals hold back the thicker oil but when it gets hot and thin it starts to pass

Normally I’d agree 100% but it’s not on start up. It’s after I’ve driven it for a short distance then stopped at lights/junction etc. then if bellows out white smoke as if turbo seals, but then once cleared doesn’t do it all day.

My thought was oil sitting in the breather system being sucked in after some boost?? Don’t really know.

Odd one that then @Mark_L, have you checked in the downpipe through the lambda for any witness marks? anything in the boost pipework?

So a small update, the car is currently off the road. Turbo was whipped off and sent to TurboDynamics for a refresh. I also included a spare stock turbo just in case they needed any spare parts to work on mine. The report came back and it wasn't great tbh. There was some forward an back play in the turbo which has written off the comp and turbine wheels, bearing housing and backplates. The oil feed in the thrust bearing was partially blocked which likely caused the issues to start and probably came from me running the Turbo after the rebuild. Oversight on my part, not sure why I didn't fit the old turbo or an inline filter like we would on the old Renault 5 GT turbos. For some reason it was fitted with a TD04L turbine over a TD04 item, even though the wheel is a tiny bit larger it has an extra blade in it and would of probably caused my top end restriction and lower peak figures. TD couldn't think why it would of been used as it adds restriction rather than reducing it. Out of all of it the only parts being salvaged for use on the new unit are the bearing housing from my old stock turbo and the machined compressor housing (which wasn't done to a high standard either so is also getting reworked) So all in all my still boosting fine turbo that had a bit of play and oil loss is a write off lol 🤦‍♂️

On the positive side, (after a little bum and wallet raping, though still loads cheaper than an off the shelf hybrid turbo) ill have a newly assembled 19T Hybrid with nearly everything new, built up with cut back turbine blades and upgraded thrust bearings.

Remember a few fun days long gone making hybrid turbos at a few well known places bk when you could be part of the process from coffee and chat design to machining, balancing etc etc 😎

If it makes you feel beter @Adey I am yet to ever find the easy oh it just needs a good clean and mild refurb 😆

Be interesting to see how the new item performs👍

Hopefully it’ll make a difference once it’s back on.

Was it much more than what they quoted for?

No smoke would be a good start lol, it'll need a map tweak again but it will defo have a less restrictive back end on it. I will probably fit it and slap it on my mates dyno to make sure its safe for now then take it back to EFI at some point.

A little more, a basic refurbish and rebuild is £195+vat. Mine came in at £550 all in, including return delivery which isn't bad considering everything bar the bearing housing and front cover will be new. If it needed a housing/core too it would of been another £300ish+vat on top I think they said.

Once I get the Clio Mot’d I’ll stick it in our rollers here and check the fuelling and see why it seems rich/smokes whilst on boost. It’s time to move it on I think.

Whilst the kids and wife were out in found a few spare hours to look at fitting the rs133 undertray. The holes all lined up with ones on the subframe but had no actual fixings or threads in them. I'm unsure how they are held on on the 133 but I went with rivnuts and stainless cap head bolts. Should help with smoothing and directing airflow under the car and hopefully help towards keeping the bay cooler. Another unseen upgrade I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️
