21 Turbo 21 Turbo Quadra joins Renault 5 stable!

Andy just looking over the pics, you have a Phase 3 clutch hydraulic system. The piston is not retained and it's been removed and the piston has fully extended (it looks like the tabs that retain it are missing). This is now useless and will be full of air and there is no way to bleed it (well, no proper way anyway).

See your messages on FB.

Argh... Vendor told me it had all been done. I trusted him! Was a very nice guy but I now question his integrity. I just wish people were more honest! Oh well, now want to get the conversion done... I am asking round to see who has the bits I need!
I just want it done properly as I want to enjoy the car...

I'll take a look tomorrow...
Good news today! The exhaust manifold has been removed without ANY studs breaking! What are the chances?
Engine and box are out. Head is off.
I'm waiting for a call from the breaker about the clutch conversion parts

Reckon you'll get all the studs out without breaking them? You should replace em if poss. Make new ones from M8x1.25 50mm long stainless bolts, chop the heads off to make new studs. See my recent updates for example pics :)

It would be good to replace them but not sure if I will ask them to go to that effort. I managed to buy some 50mm sections of stainless threaded rod so no need to cut down bolts!

I will discuss with them tomorrow.

Latest update is a broken front ABS sensor. They dropped the hub. Apparently available new from Renault so I have asked them to go ahead and order one and I'll go 50/50 on it. I think I have one in the stock of parts I have but if a new part is available still I should go with that.

Andrew

I am but believe in give and take. They were asking if I could get one cheaper so we could have done that but I am prepared to pay a little more if it means I get a new part!

Hi Andrew, first of all, well done for buying a Quadra, welcome to the club! I own one myself.
In all points I have to agree with Dave. Although I would change all belts, water pump, oil and filters before even driving it, just to be on the safe side.
The gearbox whine definitely isn't normal, you should have it looked at. I wonder how much oil is in it?
About your instrument panel, I have similar problems, had 3or 4 different units in there, makes no difference. The problem is the wires being corroded. The same goes to your door and headlight problem. I've got the same issue with the passenger front door. The headlight main beam issue I sorted with a H4 xenon conversion. High beam bulbs been replaced by H3 led bulbs (3 quid on ebay).

Auxiliary water pump wire seems to be knackered. Same happened to me, just rot away. £90 on German eBay or £180 from Renault.

Klonking noise from rear could be many things. You can get bushes from Renault. Get it looked at asap. I suspect diff/driveshafts, but it could also be related to your gearbox problems (had similar less the whining).
Your engine seems to be a dizzyless Ph3 model with dual ignition coil pack. Engine code is J7R756. I've got the same.
I hope this helps and good luck!

Thank you! Your car sounds like it has 9 lives! I'm very interested in hearing how it was repaired after those accidents...

Update from me today. The engine and box are out. Head is away at the engineering shop. Right hand side engine mount does need renewing, I have one on order!

The rear brake hoses I ordered were too long (aargh) so I got them cut down and new ends fitted by Rally Design. Only trouble is the ends are not exactly the same. I have no idea I'd they'll fit the brackets or not!

The right hand side strut top bearing is definitely broken. It has a bit of metal sticking out of it! My garage has had to borrow a special spring compressor. I had heard that it was a Renault specific tool. I'm just lucky that my garage is well connected and they know who to contact.

Both gearboxes are being dismantled and I am really hopeful that a good one can be built from the two bad ones.

As far as the clutch is concerned, I have an early phase 2 pedal on order (this will allow me to keep the foot rest, I believe) and a used bleedable slave cylinder and a repair kit for the same on order. Now I am just missing the master cylinder but I am hopeful that I have found one.

One of the braided oil feed pipes needed cutting, so I am very pleased that I bought new ones!

I am also delighted to tell you that all the exhaust studs have been removed and none of them snapped! Eat your heart out, Dave!

I am very impressed at how organised the garage is. All the parts are labelled and pushed into bits of card and stored in the boot!

The rear diff weeps oil but I hope it's ok!

And yes, mine is dizzyless Ph3

I can get new clutch masters if you need one. About £80 IIRC. VERY good on the head studs, great news! You're right the springs are awkward but they can be done with normal compressors, it is a bastard though. I always ratchet strap the springs to the bench just in case one slips or breaks!

Make sure you use the correct 'box oil when refilling, do the diff with the same stuff it only needs a litre or so. Use 85w90 synthetic.

Water pump looks like its been renewed, which is good, saves an expense!

Excellent, thanks Dave! I will also need the pipe from the brake reservoir to the cylinder. I am waiting to hear from Keirran on whether the breaker still has these parts.
I have specified the correct 'box oil on my job sheet for the garage. I bought the wrong stuff, which is in the boot so I need to tell them not to use it! I am still waiting (with baited breath) to hear if a good 'box can be built!
I bought the new water pump, just decided it should be done, so no expense spared, unfortunately! They've already fitted it. The project is at a standstill for a bit while waiting for various things. The head should be back early next week.

When do you think you'd be able to send the clutch line and slave repair kits? I will send the address of my garage so you can send the stuff directly to them...

Thanks!
Andrew

All arrived today. Didn't know you'd bought the slave kit either (only just checked) good job I had two in stock!
Missed post office today so will probably dispatch Monday.

Remember you will need to re-cut the pipe ends with a grinder and make sure its neat, the vendor has used snips and I think this is why mine leaked at first. You need a clean cut, put the collar over, slot the olive over the teflon pipe and under the braid making sure the pipe is butted up against the inside ridge of the olive, then push the banjo fitting end in and do up the collar until it stops.

Brief update!
I have heard back from the gearbox guy - it's the bearings that were making the whining noise. I have been quoted at around £900 inc VAT to do the work. It's got to be done, but ouch! :negative.gif:
I don't understand how they could have failed in the first place. Not sure which bearings were faulty. If internal, probably due to lack of oil. Aargh!
Andrew

Yep. Sadly nothing I can do about it because the car is in at my favourite garage and they subcontracted the work to a transmission specialist. He has already spent time stripping down two boxes and the garage needs it back ASAP. I wouldn't choose to do things this way in the future, but it does have the advantage that I should get the car back pretty quickly.
