200 at the wheels for a standard Mk1 seems surprising to me only because I have seen several RR results on standard Mk1s and Mk2s all have shown figs slightly down on what Renault quote. Figs for other models from Renault have suggested this too. Some manufacturers are spot on with their quoted figs, some are not. It's partly marketing.

200 atw would equate to about 239 at the flywheel. Thats why it seems high to me for a standard Mk1. I'm not trying to start a Cliosport type argument, don't misunderstand me, just commenting from my experience of talking to and using highly experienced race mechanics/tuners/RR operaters.

Could be that the figs do vary greatly for both models now that more cars are being tested. Would be interesting to see more cars run 1/4 miles for some more figs to analyse and cross-reference. If some cars are making 215 standard and others 240, that would show.

There's some good reading on this site about all this stuff.

I hear ya m8. Its a friendly discussion thats all! All I'm trying to understand and I think we've established this that the 230 and 255 figurs renault give are indeed at the FLY

Now, my car was giving 200.8BHP at the WHEELS standard. And when I fitted the K&N Apollo kit is read 213BHP. A large increase for a sealed induction unit but correct none the less.

I fail to see how 200BHP could be anything other than at the wheels because by your maths if it was a FLY figure then the wheels output would be 165/170 bhp which is just ludicrous for the MK! V6...! Do you get me?

13BHP for the induction unit is a massive increase and even the guys who fitted and set up the car (they're mates so theres no behind the scenes messing about!) couldn't believe it. But forget that and the figure of 200.8BHP as standard seems correct. I don't know what the calculation to work out the loss in power form the fly to the wheels but I'm sure it differs from car to car. I always worked on a 30BHP loss so to me 200BHP for a mk1 at the wheels is spot on!

Thanks for the link....think I read that before. I love all the theory behind torque, power etc!

Hey, one more thing, you have a seriously tuned Mk1 m8 and you out of all of us bofins on this forum would know the most about power/torque and increase from modifications so I'm not doubting anything your saying at all!

What is interesting, as you say, is getting back to back runs, without and then with the IK kit. Regardless of whether I think the RR is setup to be generous, the increase with the kit warrants looking at it seriously.

Transmission losses is explained in detail from the link but you have to read through a bit to understand it.

Agreed....Thats the only way I would fiit any bolt on upgrade....back to back runs! At £50 a pop it needs to be accurate! The first run with the kit fitted saw 213.8BHP. That was 1 month ago when the weather/air temp was cooler. Last Friday I brought it back in and it say 207.8BHP....not sure whether the warmer air temp/humidity would have affected this. They told me the car seemed a bit warm unlike doing it from cold? Not sure again what difference this makes.

The K&N kit is universal so its not even custom designed for the V6....looks and sounds lovely and at least I know I've got morepower and torque and generous ammounts more too!

AFAIK the car hasn't been chipped/remapped by its previous owner in Japan although the way they treat cars over there it may well have been? What do you think?

If it had been chipped the figure for standard would make more sense to me. I can lend you my old ECU, plug it in and dyno it, then compare results. Alternatively find a Renault garage that know their stuff and get them to plug into yours and see if it has a standard map. Maybe it's Japanese upbringing has taught it to be feisty........

As far as I know the Japanese versions were the same output weren't they? They didn't give out more like Japanese manufacturers do nowadays compared to the same models made for the UK markets eg subaru/mitsubishi?

My mk1 ran 225bhp ATW on the AMD (Bicester) rolling road 18 months ago. It had a BMC CDA with the feed running to the side vent - however the cooling was only provided at the front of the car, this caused some debate.

Not too sure that an airfilter releases so much potential without remapping, but the figures seem to suggest otherwise.

Think the OEM post has been answered already! Albeit in a round a bout sort of way....A new ECU may be the way to go as for the money a Superchip or Dastek or UNichip etc they're all too pricey IMHO.....

£300 isn't bad for the Superchips if the gains are noticeable and the car is std or just has a performance air filter.

Yeah but its hard to know what is/are noticeable gains on any car? I know mine has increased by a maximum of 13BHP over standard. I had only been driving the car 2 weeks before I had the K&N Apollo kit fitted so I wasn't really sure if I could tell the difference. I think I can , throttle response is better and pulls better higher up. Its the age old question though as to whether the noise convinces you that the gains are good. Combined with a chip I'm not too sure about.....TRW1 is the man to ask about modifying. I think he's done the lot and there may be other more worthwhile mods than chipping to start off with if you want to get into that arena. Loosing weight would be my choice over a chip but to successfully do this on a V6 is near impossible I think?

I was under the opinion that a few places are now able to map the original chip.
Anyone able to confirm this?

...and more importantly, who does the one with flames on the overun?

Hmmmm. Now i'm thinking.

Group buy number 2:
Custom remap to suit individual cars (mk1, mk2, new zorst, new induction, etc) with switchable overrun flame option! 8)
Book a whole day with a mapping place to do ~5 cars for a discount.

What do'ya reckon?

Peter :D

Excellent idea Peter! The VX Owners Club ran one at the weekend with over 30 cars booked in....think of all that money (err, new customers) the owner made!!

Ok that little idea is going on the back burner till the Zorst Malarky is finished.

To be continued....

Might I suggest Mr.Peter does his homework with AndyGDI and his SMT6 pack?

I will open this up to suggestions of suppliers at the start of the group buy process. Cos I know very little about remapping options for the Vee.

Peter. :D
