V6 Ph1 Clubsport

That reads very well mate :approve:

Despite my protestations that mine wouldn't undergo any engine work I think it'll eventually be inevitable.

Keeping in mind that everything has been played with apart from the engine, throw into the mix that the car was definitely staying 100% oem then engine works have to be somewhere down the line.

TBH Brian, to me it reads:
Ph2 Engine &
Ph2 gearbox
lobbed into a Ph1

I think Tim Allen’s posts have been removed, so I simply posted this up for reference.

I’m simply posting this up as a reference point for sizes & offsets.

Interior project: Blue to black

This had already been started previously with very nice Recaro Sportster CS and black nappa door-cards. Unfortunately, the engine covers and dashboard were treated to a black flocking procedure which looked ‘flocking mental’.

Earlier in the thread, you will find that I was hoping to follow Danny Coolaslife’s lead on black nappa trim for the whole interior. In pursuit of perfection, I couldn’t quite get my head around how the blue air vents would work? I know they could be spray painted but I had premonitions of missed bits and/or flaking.

The only other feasible option was to find a scrap Clio II Initiale and loot it for parts. Remarkably, I have been looking for over 2 years on Gumtree & eBay and they’re increasingly rare. My only stipulation was that I wanted to find one within 40 miles of SGM or my house. This weekend I managed to secure one... here’s a library picture of the interior.

Interestingly, it might’ve been easier to have reversed the process and gone from black to blue. I had a useful chat with Brian Dodd at Silverstone Classic 2019 about retrimming the door cards and Recaros in dark blue Nappa. This hasn’t been totally ruled out either - I have all the parts needed to go either way.

One difficult decision I made though was to sell the Cromodoras. They seem to either fit Ph1 road cars perfectly or sometimes slightly proud. I believe this was due to the evolution of the rear subframe in later Ph1 models.

Mine was the latter, so I relented when an offer to purchase came along.

If anything, it’s given the project some direction on the ‘Clubsport’ remit (and away from any ‘stripped out’ road-going V6 Trophy aspirations).

My Renaultsport tow hooks were sent to Russosport for analysis. Transpires that they weren’t quite to original specification (one was modified). Phil is carefully looking into reproduction options at this stage...

Re the Cromodoras and fitment.

The silver ones I can only just get away with as to where they sit with regard to poking out.

The yellow ones I think that sometime in their life they've had a few mm skimmed off the mounting face and to get them sitting where the silver ones sit 5 mm spacers are reqd.

The wheel centre caps fit on the silver ones just fine, on the yellows they hit the end of the hub shaft bit so they now live in a box. I prefer the 'without' look anyhow :approve:

Re the Cromodoras and fitment.

Yes, it’s a crying shame that all three V6 variants have bespoke wheel needs. If anything, it would’ve make group manufacturing of aftermarket alloy copies much easier.

Perhaps a V6 Trophy alloy (based on original cromodora sizing / offsets) with a removable rear wheel insert would appease all? The lack of Cromodora wheel availability for the racing cars is hindering the opportunity for them to be used properly...

Edit: The scenario reminds me of Porsche 964 RS with lightweight magnesium cup wheels. The owners typically bagged these up and switched to alloy copies for normal use.

Ok, well after a few years of posturing... I’ve acquired everything I need to push for completion. There have been a few twist & turns on plotting a way forward and no doubt more to come.

First thing has been to commission refurbed set of OE colour 17’’ with painted aftermarket centres and new MPS rubber.

I’ve gone full-circle with wheel options. Lol!

Started with a set of black-satin 17’’ Ph1, switched to V6 Trophy Cromodora, then to sIlver OE 18’’ Ph2, now back to silver OE 17’’ Ph1.

The reality is that alloys are more crack-resistant than mags, Ph1 OE offsets fit correctly, 17’’ replacement tyres costs are less and spare sets are more affordable.

(If there was such a thing as Alloy 18’’ Croms with correct offset - then that would’ve be my preference. Please could somebody make this happen!)

I can.

Just pop me a blank cheque over, and i'll sort it :)
I should’ve said ‘within budget’. Lol!

I still think if there was a way to create a Cromodora-style alloy that could offer crossover-model offset inserts - shifting x50 sets would be fairly easy. Might even encourage the V6 Trophy folk to use more often...

Poignant photography with the Acid in the background… but here we have the project Ph1 engine - ready for overhaul under the watchful eye of SGM.

Let’s hope we can tame the beast!

The project mantra is to keep all the key ingredients that make the Clio V6 special.
It’s a hot-potch of Ph1 looks, Ph2 drivetrain & running gear components, plus some clever motorsport upgrades.

SGM will want to retain some of the intellectual property that will go into this project. I have to respect that.

On completion, I look forward to getting it out to meetings for V6 enthusiasts to try out for themselves. :approve:
