V6 Ph1 Clubsport

Kett

Active Member
Hi Folks,

Many of you guys will be familiar with the following thread which describes Tim Allen's efforts to create a very special Ph1.

viewtopic.php?f=44&t=6224&sid=a403804fe701bbeb189b53eb0389e196#p56631

I took on the project a few years ago and after an initial hiatus - have started to get stuck in with the total assistance of Scott SGM.
I feel that recents events have been such that this special Vee can now be know as Kett's V6 Trophy-inspired road car and this 'new' thread will keep folk up to date on developments.

Watch this space!

:approve: great! Having had the privilege of driving this beast, I look forward to hearing more on its progression!

I'll be the first to say it... This thread needs pics! ;-)

We need pictures to start the thread. Looking forward to keeping an eye on this thread as it progresses.

I guess it starts with a 300bhp magazine article and this vehicle:

Said magazine can be found on the coffee table at SGMs...

As with all such projects; patience and financially misery is key. Tim had given up. Note, when I acquired this Vee it had acquired a new number plate and spoiler.

You will have noticed that this Vee had a 'ducktail v6 trophy spoiler' which was replaced with a 'face-lifted v6 trophy spoiler' replica in painted carbon fibre.

Bit of a faux-pas in many folks opinion...

So (ironically) this was going to be reverted back to previous.

Seasoned campaigners will know that trophy race car parts do not fit the road car... even thought they both look flipping similar. (I believe the rear windscreen is the only common part.)

I bought one of these from eBay:

It's a copy - but true to the original.

There are 2 ways to fit these.
1) bodge it
or
2) acquire a Russosport base

Luckily for me - SGM had a spare base. Double luckily for me - an original V6 Trophy spoiler was acquired...

...Carl Read's Vee had the same strict principles applied.

Long and short is that I now have a reproduction fibreglass 'ducktail' and carbon-fibre 'facelift' Trophy V6 spoiler for sale.
Donation to club if sold!

Carl Read comes into the next section of the story...
...as he sourced the Cromodoras.

Here's Carl's version of events:

''I was told the wheels were originally from a race team, who had painted them black and put race tyres on them ready to put on their car. However, they were never used and were a spare set for the seller. When I got them, to my untrained eye, the wheels did not look like they had ever been mounted as there were no bolt marks to the paint and you could see the Cromodora logo under the paint.

When I got them stripped and crack tested by Jemison engineering I told Ian the story and he was in agreement that they did not look like they had never been mounted or used.

I had them crack tested and primed by Jemison Engineering. Scott @ SG then arranged for the wheels to be painted.''

Carl heads up http://www.westair-reproductions.com/ which manufactures museum reproductions.
He is fastiduous with attention to detail. The Cromodora logos and centre-caps were perfectly replicated..

For some reason - the Ventureshield product on the front panels had become discoloured. I figured that it was going to need removal.
Before ditching it - I made a chance call to VII Car Care to see if restoration was possible...

Mucho respect to Dawn, who restored the ventureshield to it's former glory.

I guess at this point - it's externally looking 'V6 Trophy' like.

So the $1M question is 'what to do with the interior?'

This was simply down to personal preference. After some deliberation, I elected to go for a 'clubsport' interior: half cage, race seats, motorsport steering wheel, harnesses, fire extinguisher.

Luckily, the Willans four-point harnesses and Recaro Sportster CS seats (on custom rails) were already fitted. So next stage was the roll-cage...

NB I wasn't too keen on the Dynamic Silver centre panels on the bucket seats. More on that later...

The Safety Devices half cage was ordered from Mark Fish and colour coded to the external paintwork.

We were able to instruct the fabricators to partially raise the position of the diagonal brace - having seen how tight the access to the engine cover could be. See below:

Here is the installation:

I guess it takes some gall to 'hack' the engine covers to accommodate a roll cage. I was wholly unimpressed with the flocked covers (I tend to drop the 'l') and was happy to have them sabotaged.

Having a fire extinguisher fitted seemed like a bit of a folly. More in keeping with the 'clubsport' theme and just for show.

Little did I know that this small red canister and rapid access to the engine compartment would become saviour features of this Vee...

So anybody following this thread will have seen that I've changed the title from 'V6 Trophy inspired road car' to 'V6 Ph1 Clubsport'.

It's a more appropriate title for the development plan that I have in mind.
