I can see it now. 'no it needs semi slicks....for safety ' 😂

So with a few last bits coming for the Clio (which is running well) I've started taking bits off this engine.
Exhaust manifold is offPXL_20220921_013330993.webp

1 snapped bolt was left pushed in for me. So I'll have to try to get that out and replaced . Exhaust gasket ordered.

Inlet manifold is off. No snapped studs but when cleaning up the threads, one of them gave me a bit of grief. But I believe it's tight enough now.
PXL_20220921_014442321.webp
There was an attempt to clean it. But it's not really worked with degreaser. Might just sand blast the aluminium bits.

Injector rail is also off. And will be put aside for cleaning.
Unused idler taken off (I believe it's obsolete as there's no air con anymore)

And I'd like to get the belt off next and have a look behind the timing chain cover. But I think I'll get it in the air for now and attempt to get the gbox off.
I have ordered that oil pressure sensor for the back but I'm struggling to find the cap on the cam. I think I'll knock it out and reuse it with some gasket seal.

Cheers

Got my bung along with inlet and exhaust gaskets. (Inlet was the wrong side of the sandwich plate which is now removed but I'll reuse the original anyway)
Waiting for my oil sensor.
Also had the gearbox off for a slight clean and and to see how much life the clutch had left (lots) then put it back on.
Ordered the selector cables.
Went to test fit.
Something is missing FFS.

I can't find part numbers or any for sale. So I asked on saabworx and got one coming to me straight away.

Also had a look down the thermostat housing and saw something I didn't like.
PXL_20220923_144258892.webp
Which turned out to be fine. But the thermostat gasket was ropey as and needed a new one anyway. So stat and gasket ordered.
Getting there
Cheers.

That was quick getting the cam bung! I'm guessing the oil sensor was leaking/wrapping?

Oil sensor changedPXL_20220924_204524043.webp
24mm for ref for this one.

The thermostat and seal that needs changing.

PXL_20220925_154246047.webp
Injectors cleaned with contact cleaner and seals greased up lightly. Fitted to the inlet.

PXL_20220925_154519068.webp
Inlet face cleaned with blade. Then sand paper. Then a hard brush.

PXL_20220925_211349759.webp
Exhaust side. This was the snapped studs. Quite proud of myself with this one. Fill the remaining hole with weld and then hold a nut over to weld on. To my surprise it wound out no real issue after. Happy with that. Face then cleaned up.
Cheers

Thermostat is in. Exhaust manifold is on so I've started working on cleaning the turbo.

Couple of reference pictures as I've already pulled it apart and given it a clean.
Exhaust side wasn't too bad tbh but had def let a bit of oil by. All cleaned up, greased and put back together, checking orientation of in out and core.
I also re bend the actuator rod back to its original position.
It now spins lovely and freely with little play in out or up and down.
I have got to put the coolant line on it. They're long hardliners that bolt directly to the block waterways and the thermostat housing.
Oil feed is also bolted with a hard line from the filter housing.
Running out of things to do tbh.
I can see at least 6 m6 bolts missing needing to be ordered for pinning stuff down.
There's a sensor or fixing missing from the turbo inlet. Was probably actually for recirc stuff. That needs blanking off.
Also the turbo downpipe studs need attention. 1 is missing. Another is stripped.
Cheers

Progress on this will also stop as per the money running out. Means the tigra needs to be used again. So I can't pull it apart just yet.

But. Turbo is clean and lubricated. Freely spinning. Still on the search for a gear shifter that'll suit this. I've got to do that cam bung, clean up and refit the oil filter housing and find a few m6 bolts and it should be good to drop in.
PXL_20221001_214013236.webp
Cheers

Also the dump valve is only a place holder obviously. Dump valves belong in the bin with all the other turbo noise killing things.

i Believe the DV on these engines are a piece of shit, just get shot as said. Good progress, shame about project slowing right down tho.

Just doing a few final bits that are very cheap/free.

I've got the turbo on with its coolant lines and oil feed and drain. What a pain that is and it's out of the car!

PXL_20221007_163352940.webp

Ive ordered 4 nuts for the turbo mount. And the hole in the intake pipe looks to be m14x1.5 so I've ordered a sump plug for that. Still need a c clip or split pin for the actuator arm. I know I've got pins somewhere in the garage.

I found a few random m6 fasteners to tie this boost pipe down.

PXL_20221007_163420525.webp

Got the oil filter housing on with some sealant as there is actually no gasket, after giving it a clean. New oil filter aswell. The 2 holes are for the oil cooler lines. I've got them aside for now.

PXL_20221007_163339111.webp

Starting to wonder how these coolant lines go. The turbo is taken care of but i seem to have 2 for the rad. 2 for the matrix. And an extra 1 matrix sized. The header that came with it has 1 small pipe. 1 medium pipe and 1 small pipe blocked off.
I'm sure it'll become clear when it's all in but atm is don't know.

PXL_20221007_163434189.webp

So a fair bit more work than just drop in ready but nearly there now.

Cheers

Been ticking jobs off the list for this thing.
Got a new serpentine belt as it looked a bit ropey and a new used tensioner to go with it as the mechanism to change the belt was very easy and convenient. But had broken. It was just put a long 3/4 extension in and pull it forward. And the special engine mount was I the wayPXL_20221014_153729796.jpg
PXL_20221021_161948842.jpg

Turbo bolted to the manifold. 1 stud seems short. I'll investigate this later.
Also have a bung for the recirc in the turbo inlet. And found a stiff paperclip for my actuator retainer.
PXL_20221021_162004123.webp

I fixed the throttle cable holder with a soldering iron. It seems stiff but if it's not I'll strengthen it with some staples melted in aswell. (Do I sound like a bodger?)

PXL_20221021_161924872.jpg
Done alot of research on what shifter I can and can't use. No where mentioned a Mk5 Astra h shifter. It fits the cables. Has the gears in the right places. And it even seems to have the same bolt pattern as what's in there alreadyPXL_20221009_133752388.jpg
I guess I'll find out why no one uses them when I put it all in.

PXL_20221021_161845847.jpg
And this thing here. I've been trying to get hold of this little boomerang part for ages. Either there's no part number or it comes with the shift mechanism.
When I bought the shifter, the chap put the mechanism in there aswell so I've taken it from that and put it all in. All connected up I can shift through the gears and even get into reverse. I cant see why this wouldn't work.

Some Renault content (there had to be some)

Mégane 225 fuel pump. If it's good for a mapped Mégane it'll be good to use here.
PXL_20221019_130305663.webp
The plug connector has broken in transit. No problem, I'm going to use spade connectors on this anyway. (Just £13 for this)

The only thing stopping me putting this in now is the hubs and brakes situation.
I have Saab shafts to go with the gearbox. I need hubs with 33teeth. I need meriva A knuckles and larger wheel bearings.
The hubs I've bought. On their way.
I know the bearings I need.
But the knuckles seem to be impossible to get hold of. There's a few that I can use but none of them seem to be available as a sensible price.
Once I have got all this then I need to think about brakes as even if I can use the ones that are on there now, I wouldn't want to. They're pathetic.
So what I can do is order some of thesePXL_20221018_174639097.webp
Bottom right adapters to fit 308mm discs and.... The brembos I saved when I scrapped my Mégane 175! Perfect.

Other than that the only other thing stopping me starting is the looming mot on my C30 (will be her car whilst I'm doing all of this) I think that's going to give me a tough time.
Cheers

Made a start on the brakes yesterday in preparation to getting them to fit.
Pins are seized solid!
PXL_20221022_014356752.webp
Ive had to cut the pads out leaving bits of pins either side. I cannot get them out. Lubricated them and knocked them with punches and studding and nothings moving.
I don't want to hit anything too hard as it's soft aluminium and it looks like someone has attempted it already fairly brutally.
Any ideas? Would heat be the only option here?

Can you drill them out? I would be tempted to drill out centre, as wide as safe assuming you dont have a pillar drill and try to shock it out, ali and steel when corroded never fun and you do need to take it easy on the caliper.

I have a pillar drill. You thinking just a small bit?
The spikey side is stuck aswell. I'm worried if I enlarge the holes too much then the calipers will be shot.
I'll try drilling before heat. I'd rather not disturb the pistons and seals.

Heat them, ally has a different expansion ratio to steel and if you get a very hot heat source on them and raise the temp quickly they should knock out. If you drill out (hard) steel in a (soft) ally caliper I guarantee you will damage the pin hole and the pins wont interference fit properly any more.
