The Campus Turbo 'in stock' build

i resisted temptation to start a ‘powder coating box’
It seemed cheap when I had the first box done so I went a bit mad and i'm now up to £360 worth :o though that includes the whole rear beam and trailing arms and about 50 - 60 other smaller items from roll bars to brackets.

Great to see you found the hidden option @Will D93

I’ll be honest I came across that purely by accident Andy, good though as I had looked for a way to change my username before also and come up empty.

Aye it’s inevitably going to add up quick but the pile of stuff you have done is fine for the money I would say.

Got a bit done over the weekend, lots of jumping between welding, applying and sanding filler, applying zinc primer and buffing back surface rust.
But in amoungst it all I have managed to nearly finish shaping the rear arches and the corner of the front screen. Worked around the front of the car from that corner buffing back and priming scabby areas getting the bay ready for a paint with the rest of the car.

NS front bumper mount is in decent enough shape to not need replaced at all, I cleared out the whole scuttle panel area and had a think about putting the expansion bottle and AEI unit up in there where the jack would go.
I think that’s my plan for those two.

Made it all the way round today and had a look at the other corner of the windscreen, I approached this side a different way to the first. I think it’s gone a bit better although i didn’t finish it tonight.

Some pictures,

Cheers, 👍🏼

Got a day down at the garage today from about 12 till 9

Did a bit of tidying up and a re shuffle to allow more space and better access to the car.

While the car was getting pushed in and out of the shed the wheel bearing that I’ve always thought would one day separate, did LOL

Ironic because I had brought a driveshaft nut down that I had finally dug out to hold it all together properly.

So got it jacked up and a pallet withcastors under it so I could swing it round to sit side on and give decent access to the underside.

Moved on and stripped the rear beam and front subframe off the car, removed the tank for the first time, removed all the fuel and brake lines from the underside of the car.

It’s now at the point where I need to go at it with a knotted wheel on the grinder and see what it leaves me with. This being the first serious look I’ve had though I am happy enough. Although the rust has started eating into metal it all seems solid still.

So I’m hoping for a couple of days on the grinder and some minimal welding, then get it all sealed up and the running gear back on.

I will look at other peoples complete fuel pump / line set ups to decide what to do with this car, the original fuel lines were shot.
Brake lines surprisingly good. But will be replaced. New flexis too, braided I think.

More to come, messaged a man about a panel for the rear window today. Positioned the car that way so I can weld that in still.

Cheers 👍🏼

Having been reading his thread I would say yes, mine is generally more solid. It’s a lot of very good work he’s put in.

I was at the garage yesterday for a couple of hours, just degreased and washed both the petrol tank and the front subframe.
And took the opertunity to heat and free off the track rods to ease looking at getting the front suspension components aligned and working. I think I’m going to need Ph2 Gt turbo top mounts to move the struts outboard to try and match the balljoint/wishbone. And possibly camber bolts to correct the camber yet still.
Track rods I need to look at what length there is to work with.
That will all happen once the underside is all done and the subframe is back on.

Also drank two cups of tea and touched an inner front arch with a knotted wheel.. a bit.

I think I need a full day at that to be honest, full boilersuit, full face mask and see if I can get the car up a bit higher. Busy week though, so probably won’t happen till next week.

Well then.. I did get a go under the car with a wire wheel last week one night, knotted wheel on the grinder was too aggressive, wire wheel in the drill proved to be a better approach. As I’d hoped everything in the boot floor/ tank / axle mounts/ chassis legs seems to be surface rust on sound metal.
I didn’t get as far as the sills but I did put a dent in the work to be done.

Busy last week but Friday night was free to try and get the rest of the underside somewhat done. Then I had sat/Sunday to finish it off and make a start on my new kangoo daily and the work that needs doing to that.

That was the plan, however..

**WARNING- THUMB AHEAD**

I’ve chopped through the tendon in my thumb. And am destined to be in different casts for Atleast 6 weeks.

Which is shite in many ways. Progress haulted on all fronts at the moment, I’m going stir crazy already. 😤

Cheers,

Thanks, I too feel it was a valiant effort.
It is fucked like.

I’m right handed! But tbh effectively one handed at this moment.
In a week I may try and do something but im not pushing it. It’s not going to be the same as it was anyway.

That looks bad!............
Hope you'll get back to normal soon, always nice when you hurt yourself and can see the inner bits.......bluurrghhh !

That’s nearly 4 weeks since i hurt my thumb now, im still in my cast/thumb brace but once the fear of jarring it to the point of damaging it in the first couple of weeks subsided I was able to get some work done. Good news.

So the car was up in the air and the underside stripped, all looked solid yet crusty to sum it up. It all got an aggressive wire wheeling (slowly lol) and as I had hoped there was nothing under there that warranted cutting out and welding in my eyes. So it got taken back, treated and undersealed. All arches taken back and painted in trusty black Hammerite.

I don’t have any pictures of any of that during the process but theres a very dark after shot before the rear axle was bolted back on and the front rested on a palllet with castors.

137060

Very satisfying knowing underside was completed and the body work was all to do for the shell.

Being off work I was sitting doing patch all in the house for the first fortnight, lots of money was spent on eBay and the like.
Got 5 front struts with ph2 top mounts, rear shocks, fuel pump, fpr and the panel needed for the rear window for this car.
And a pile of stuff for the clio Also.

137065

Removed front wishbones and steering rack from the subframe to clean up and paint before refitting.

137057

137058

137059

I got a set of wishbones with new power flex bushes pressed in the wrong way round, nice one. Took those out, I’ll paint and refit them before putting them on the car.
Having said that I might refit another set to test it the ph2 top mounts and camber bolts (corrective) are going to give me a useable set up or if it’s going to need more thought.

Other wee jobs I’ve been doing on and off,
Started giving the vega alloys a freshen up for going on the clio.
And I trimmed down a set of valver clocks to fit so hopefully I can use them in the 5 with a bit of re pinning the plugs. Had to remove the computer cluster to fit in the dash, replaced with “Renault” from the standard clocks.
I might change it to “GT” or something, it’s the little things haha

137064

137061

Also cleared out and tidied up the garage at home so I can hopefully get the clio bits done and put some more miles on it before the mot runs out.
Very satisfying having a clear garage.

137066

So today having got all my deliveries yesterday I decided to have a go at the gaping rusty minging hole at that rear window

A reminder
137085

So I’d gotten a panel cut out from a known lad in the scene, I’m not sure if he’s on here.
Along with the other 5 parts

137067

So out came the grinder, I’d been a bit dubious as always, the fact it’s door pillar/seatbelt area also a factor slightly but hay ho, we’ve come this far haha

137068

137069

137070

137071

Decided to split the panel I’d got in two, attach the inner part first and use that to help guide the outer. I did contemplate trying to put it in as one. It would have worked but this way is better.

137073

137074

137075

137076

137077

137078

So that went on quite well I thought and was happy with it.
Maybe should have stopped, it was going on half 9 at this point but went for the outer skin as well and made 2 mistakes while trimming it down obviously. I’d gone far enough I’d be as well tacking it in as well, and now I’m home writing this it’s mostly welded in there’s just one section to finish tomorrow.

That’s the lot, I’ll get some more done soon. I’m keen to get this Past the paint stage. Who knows if it’ll see the road this year, no promises yet lol

Thanks for reading 👍🏼

Ah those last two photos!

I’d forgotten those, honest opinions please, it’s a Renault 19 16v vent.
Plan is to have the filter set up in the bay behind the headlight, directly under the vent. So function over form, I’ve had it lying about for ages to be used for this but I’m unsure if I should cut the bonnet for this or look at a different one.

Opinions please, I can’t decide if it’s too much. Front end it going to be standard campus black bumper and black Ph1 GTT grill I think

Cheers,

Great work on the Welding @Will D93 👍👍👍 that’s very nearly @Turbell levels is welding dedication on these old rusty 5’s.

Regarding the vent, what’s the final plan for the car? It the rest of it is going to look original, that 1916v vent may look like a boil on its nose, but if there’s other mods planned, then it’s very period for the time so may blend in well?
