The 1957 Dope Dauphine

Early ones arnt dowelled, my gearbox certainly has no provision for it. i think thy locate via a machined face though. urgh 12v @Turbell ill be annoying you with more questions if i do this, sorry šŸ˜‚
Starter, alternator,12V battery, wiper motor, flasher relay and bulbs then a 6V step down brick for rest, no more expensive 6V batteries to buy.Wiring is POP on this era, I'll help however needed, ask away
I used to have/may still have MK1 R5 starters/alternators, but I did sell a load of 5G stuff so perhaps it went with those......I'd have to look.

So no amount of adjustments will allow it to mesh nicely, knew it might go that way any way. So I'm now trying to find a 12v starter motor. Strangely though a chap posted on my thread on a French forum suggesting the 12v head on the 6v motor, I've sent a few messages using my best google translated french as I also found another person who did it in the opposite direction, 6v head on a 12 motor, so there may still be a chance I can stay 6v. All of this is dependant on parts getting found in peoples garages and delivery so I'm now pretty much stopped for the moment. Theres a few small bits I can do but nothing major.

So by now I'm sure you are all aware, I dislike spending money if I can make something work. So my clutch cable wasnt correct for the arm and gearbox I have made an end for it from a spare wheel bolt. Take one old wheel bolt, drill a hole some where near middle, pop an m6 tap through it then round the end and chop it to length. One working clutch. If I'd looked I could of probably purchased the correct fitting but wheres the fun in that šŸ¤·šŸ»ā€ā™‚ļø

Slowly working through the outstanding jobs that I can do before parts turn up. Firstly was a brake line that needed a repair, the friendly neighbourhood mechanic has all the tools for doing brake lines so came and repaired the main line from to rear yesterday eve, didnt do much else as I spent the evening chatting shite instead.

With that sorted this eve I bled the brakes then made up some brackets to hold the original rad to the gearbox. Not sure if it will last, most people who upgrade the engine tend to relocate the rad to the front of the car, there is probably good reason for this but it can stay out back until I see that reason. I will be fitting an electric fan to it when the car is fully up and running. With the rad in place I was then able to fit the fuel line, new filter and then the right hand paneling šŸ‘šŸ»in the last few days I've also filled it with oil and fitted a new purflux (renault oem) filter. No leaks as yet.

Are the brakes as bad as I am imagining they are?

Surprisingly no, well not so far. Ive not had to really lean on them. Servo-less drum brakes all round so they are a little lacking in feel but if you jab them they will lock up. I don't mind them but i wouldn't be doing any spirited driving with them or want to find myself in a situation where i really needed them. That said you do tend to drive it in a way so that you have a little more time to react, bigger gaps from the car in front, you watch a lot further ahead than you would in a modern. I tend to really pootle along in it anyway as thats kind of its thing.

Well its all gone to shite.

It started well, stripped down the 12v starter motors, got everything lined up and then realised that the gears wouldn't interchange. I went back through everything and found my 6v starter was 1 suffix out from the ones used in the guide. It had a 6 spline throwout drive vs the 12v 9 spline (the suffix after mine should also have the 9 spline) Anyway, i sat back for the night and had a thought on how to fix it, i know ill swap the shaft from the 12v armature into the 6v item. All was going well, removed both shafts and was feeling good about it all. Started gently putting the shaft i needed for everything to work back into the 6v armature, Slipped and fucked the whole armature up.

So now i have 2 unusable starter motor in bits, spread around my garage after i lost my rag and started launching the now broken parts about. Ideally i just need another 6v armature, from the same series of starter with the correct 9 spline armature/shaft. Try finding one though.....
