talking of parts, this water pump rebuild is doing my nut in. I sent an email saying the carbon seal was too small and the gaskets wrong to the supplier including pics. they replied they would replace them. gaskets arrived today, no internal seal ffs. bigger one is what was removed, smaller new one wont even go over the shaft...

Ok it might of been me being an idiot tbh. And i think last time I did this I may of got the kit from the same place with the wrong bits. Looking at my old gaskets and my post they didnt line up correctly. I made it all fit..... this time the smaller seal that I thought was wrong may actually be correct. I've fitted it by removing the impeller then refitting it and it all sits very nicely. Pump is currently in the kitchen sink checking for leaks. I'll fit it and probably find I've ballsed it all up

I've also remade the rotten plate from aluminium so fingers crossed I can get it all re assembled and running very soon

Urgh, bloody thing leaks worse than it did before. Needs a complete pump I guess. I think they are circa £200 looks better though and started on the button from stone cold.

Think I'd have it apart and have another crack at it, perhaps revisit bush, I've only done 4 outlet ones, French repo are usually....same as most of it...shite
See if you can Galotto garage Argentina....they were cheap, same stuff but much better prices

Took an age to get endfloat right, French thrust washers were pointless...had search stock high and low to make correct set up.....all I've achieved is potted up and crank in....coat of paint...all day

Yep I fucked up and damaged it. Idiot.

It might go again after spending an hour running it on some 1200 grit. Using a rotational method to try and keep it square and flat, rubbing it at 12 3 6 and 9 o'clock. It might go again if, probably would if I span it up in a lathe. I've ran it on the seal to see where it lands after cleaning it up.

That looks like an absolute ballache to fix, any way of adapting or changing the seals for something different ?

I best not wank any time soon I'll rip my dick off..... you can just make out in the first pic, the dent is not far off half into the flat surface. Its alot better now. Suppose best I can do is refit and try it. Not sure what type of seal is in more modern stuff or it could retro fit? never stripped one down, they are pretty much throw away service items.

I'm going to comp test it again this weekend, if it's still low I'll pull the head off.

That reminds me of fitting those phosphur bronze bushes to the rocker bar on the Extra. Fit, too tight, sand end with 1500 wet&dry, refit, torque head, remove and repeat several times, ballache!

I'll give old man a bell later and see if we've any bushes left over, but they're deffo from four pipes, later pumps with heater outlet/inlet.
All kits I've had were old stock ....I think they came with new shaft/impeller, so you only reused the casting.
Listing had five at 15 quid so I bought three, wish I'd bought them all, cos there all used up now.
There's an outfit somewhere ,possibly Birmingham that recons pumps....about 70 quid, my Dad had his done a few years ago.
Duncan Topliss should know as it was his father that tipped mine off.

Touch wood my Quagmire arm seems to have done the trick. Just ran it up for 20min and didnt see a drop escape from the pump



On to the next issue, check the compression again now i can warm her up and see if the hg is gone and causing some creamy oil. The car has 2 breathers, one is the oil cap and there is another that points down to the floor from the side of the block. I didn't know if it was condensation build up from lack of heat/running or a more serious issue.

So i warmed her up this morning and gave it a comp test. Most seem higher bar one.
#1 100psi
#2 110psi
#3 82.5psi
#4 110psi

vs the original

#1 80psi
#2 65psi
#3 67psi
#4 100psi

I decided to drop some oil down the bore and #3 jumped up to 105psi....... hmmmm #2 also looked to be spraying water out of the spark plug bore... urgh. Still started perfectly fine though. Its on a copper gasket if that makes any difference? Im wondering if the gasket was leaking a little originally, and re torquing has improved things but its still damaged? Whats your thoughts.

It's old, possibly have some corrosion, who knows what you'll find, likely there's plenty of wear in bores, etc
You're not gonna rest unless you take head off, liners might been low...it's your call, worse case clean it all and change gasket and you might gain some comp/solve water in oil, but it still might be not the best lump...I can offer you any preloved valves etc if you come across anything might wrong....but tread carefully and be realistic as to your aims...don't dig too deep!

Thanks again @Turbell for all the help with this. Am I right in thinking the liners are sat on copper seals too? and dont disturb the liners/pistons with the head off similar to the later wet liner stuff? what's the spec on liner protrusion do you know?

if it's the gasket I'm not too bothered about that as essentially its will cost very little to check and do. If the pump was still fubar I would of not bothered looking further and knocked it on the head for now.
